Fair week Cooney Backess baked 5,000 loaves of bread and 7,000 buns. Ham Weltou, of Knox county, this year raised sevcnty-flvo pound watermelons. The recent soldiers'* rc-uniou at Worthiugtou was pronounced a great success. A close examination will show the Courier to be the best paper published in Evansville. There will be no politics mixed up with the re-union at this place.— Winslow Leader. The Prohibition Catnp Meeting recently held at Vincennes was said to have been a howling success! Wednesday, the 16th, will bo the meeting of the Indiana Annual Conference of the methodist Episcopal church at; Washington. Bishop Juice Presides. Reception of members in the Methodist Church, deferred from last Sabbath, on account of the absence of the pastor, will be attended to at the close of the morning service next Sunday: A wreck occured day boforo yesterday on the E. & I. beyond Rodgers station. It was a freight train aud no serious accideut took place, but the passenger traius were delayed for a while. There will bo a reunion of Co. G. 42 Indiana Iiilautry, at Washington, on Wednesday of the Fair, September 30, 1891. All others, and the members of the regiment tire invited to attend. The Petersburg Public Schools opened here last Monday with a ilattering beginning. If the patrons will take proper interest the coming year will be a prosperous one for the young people. The Gibjer Comedy Company played here last week aud gave general satisfaction. Everybody says that they furnished the best music ever discoursed in this city, and we have had some very fine music, too. Jasper people are advocating digging cisterns like those !n Petersburg. This has not always been the case heretofore. Of those who took premiums, it is worthy of mention that Miss Lulu Davison took premiums to the amount of nine dollars, all of which she gave to the M. E. Church. Owing to the lack of space and time the list of premiums can not be printed. Tho races all came oft and Ihe shows in the different classes all took place despite tho inclement weather. Everybody are astonished that Pise county can have a Fair in the rain and still make expenses. The Fair company are already looking forward to next year and are as fully determined as ever to continue the encouragements of Agriculture, the Arts, and the Sciences. This is as it should be. .

Fortunately Mrs. Rutherford discovered the Ire bslore retiring for the night, and, calling her husband, a dieastrous Are was prevented. Mr. Rutherford poured a barrel oif vinegar on the flames and soon had them scattered. Several horses, considerable Brain, and machinery were in the barn and would certainly have been destroyed had not the lire been discovered when it was.

Some thier, whose identity is unknown, got away with about eighty dollars cash which had been secreted in a drawer in Crim * Davis’ drag store (Thompson’s old stand). The theft was committed last Thursday night but for certain reasons has not been ipade public, it party is suspected and ia being shadowed. The thief probably secreted himself in tlie store when it was olosed Thursday evening. An aged widow, who spont her last peunynfn crossing the ferry trom Louisville to Jeffersonville and was utterly destitute, recieved notice that she bad been granted a pension on account of her l ate husband,who was killed while serving: during the war with the Fourth Ohio cavelry. The pension carries with it 13,379 arrearages. Mrs. Josephine Lacy,, wife of County Clerk Joseph J. Lacy, diixl at her home on' South Eleveuth street at 10 o’clock Saturday evening. Wayne to Evansville about, two week’s ago aud was thought to be a well horse. Last winter a silver tube was put in the horse’s throat ho as to relieve him of short wind that he might be a winner in the northern circuit this season. At Ft. Wayne several months ago on necouut of failing wind he was nulled in a race nud shortly after contracted lung disease which caused his death. The Commercial Gazette says it should lie generally known that the agricultural department at Washington,, D. Cn is propagating a bacteria wHtinh voraciously preys on the cabbage worm. Those who are suffering from this instructive pest should apply for the corrective. The bacteria is preserved in gelatine and can be sent auy distance by mail. Vincennes Commercial, 3th. L. it. Jacob App, the engineer whs went down in the terrible railway wreck near Tell City, while returning to Cnnnelloo, barely escaped lynching at Troy by parties who (pet relatives in that disaster. He was not to blame for the wreck, but Troy, Cannelton* and Tell City suffered loss of life, and the feeling is so bitter against the Lovisville, Evansville & Su Louis railway that the mob tried to wreak vengeance upon App. Vineennet Sun, Sept. 4. A “confidence game” was played on two young men from the country this moruing. They came in town last Highland stopped at the Wallace Houseon Fair Ground Avenue. This morning they started out b unting for and the first man they met told them he had just come to town looking for hands to work on his form. They soon agreed on terms and he told them to wait until he could go and get his team and he would take them out home with him. He was gone but a short time when he returned and told them that he wauted to take some things out with him but hod left his pocket book at home. He asked t hem if they could loan him 35 until they could get home when be would return it. One of the young men pulled out the money and handed It to him. He then went to purchase the goods but has not yei returned. ; ; - Last Saturday evening a 15-year old son of Frank White threw a cat on the South bound E. 4b T.
