There will be exactly three months or school in Petersburg, counting front last Monday, \ The trustees were in last week to attend to their business with the I County Commissioners. Next Sunday evening Rev. Fields subject will be,lUoney in the Lien's Den.” It is a sermon to young people. The offices of the Air Line railroad are to he moved from Louisville to Evansville according to present arrangements. The case of Johu L. Bigham against the Oak laud City Fair Association has been takeu to the Supreme Court of Indiana. Dubois county defeated the provision tc donate two per cent, lax to building th(‘ Motion road ironi French Lick to Evansville. The* Oakland City Busiuess Men’s Association is said to be going right along, doing good work all the time. Luck to such enterprise. Algiers Lodge No, 563, at Algiers, Indiana, will hold an election at their hall, on the evening of March 27th, 1891, for the purpose of electing three trustees. Oakland, ala Chicago, except having too few people by ever a million seven hundred thousand, is wanting to incorporate a big slice of Columbia township. The old friends of Rev. II. N. King are invited to he present at the M. E. Church next Sabbath morning, March 15, to take a formal leave of himself and family. The Air Line will commence work on its new shops at Princeton in April, and will have its tracks changed for its new entrance to that town by the first of July. There is strong talk, says the Oakland City Enterprise, of organizing a vigilance committee to regulate the conduct of two married people who reside in that suburban village. Mrs. Henry Keifer recently preserved her husband a fine girl baby, lleury was considerable excited, but managed to withstand the shock by* the use of a bottle of Bergen’s Asthma Curs. Evansville was about to get left out of the base hall league, and the cranka there were greatly alarmed about it. But they have finally worked themselves In, and Evansville will have base ball. A valuable Newfoundland dog died suddenly on Main street a tew days ago. It belonged to George Pinney and was a present from his brother-in-law, Samuel Muir. Allen, Chief engineer of the Mackey lines, reports that the roadbed and bridges of the Mackey lines passed through the severe test given I hem this winter in a highly satisfactory manner. Many ia tliis county arc congratulating "themselves over the prospect of the county commissioners in refusing to grant license. Well, what if they do, that does not stop the saloon from comiug. The applicant still has legal recourse by which he can/orce his infamous business upon our people. Watch this matter and see it it Is not the case.—Princeton Era. Dr. W. H. Fulleuwider delivered a lecture at the Presbyterian Church, last Friday evening, on ethics. The discourse was a carefully prepared one. The lecture had the rare quality of pleasing even those whose education was not sufficient to enable them to thoroughly understand it, and of putting the scholar to his soberest thoughts at the same time. The ladies of the Aid Society, on Thursday of last week, presented the editor of the News a fine gold pen. Thin is published, not for the purpose of making the unmarried ladies of the society, or marriagable daughters ot title married ladies blush. It is out of the range of possibilities to make the editor of the News blush. This is merely a news item. The Democrat has a good circulation in and near Oakland City. It carries a well written advertisement ja£ W. V. Hargrove & Co. Some ot The citizens right in Oakland City have been coming to Petersburg to buy goods of that firm. Can you take a hint, or do some merchants need knocking down with a merchant’s commercial club? Thursday last a man came to town from Knox county, and got out side of too much benzine. He bad a fine dog with him, but ihe dog was decent enough to stay sobei. When, the man started home he was too drunk to drive. So his horse went about the street at random until the town Marshal arrested the man and put him in fail. The horse was cared for and so was the man to the tuiie of a J. P’s decision. At Princeton last week the County Commissioners of Gibson county refused to grant liquor liueuse to any one, no difference what his character or Ills standing in society. The refusal was on the ground the County Commissioners do not have to grant a license unless they want to do so. The opinion is based on a decission of Chief Justice Fields, which is said to bo to that effect. Just as we go to press we receive the graiitving intelligence thatour Conn- ! iy Commissioners have refused to grant license to Thomas Brown ol Owensville. Mr. Roberts refused absolutely to consider his application Mr. Weed favored granting license and Mr. Mangrum refused upon the ground of unfitness. The fact of the matter is no more license will bt granted by Oibson County Commissioners. All honor to these men in I tbo brave stand they have taken foi I the right_Princeton Era,
Forgery by 8mm Om. Thursday about 6 p. in. a stranger called at N. U. Jepsou’s jwelry store aud wauted to buy a watch. A trade was finally made, the stranger giving a note signed by Scot Mitchell as principal afni James Shawhau as surety, IkmIi well kuowu residents of Petersburg. in pay ment for the time piece. The iioie was for forty-five dollars, fitly cents more than the price of the watch, which Mr. Jep.-on paid the mau in cash. * Shortly afterward Mr. Jepson beeatne suspicious of the note aud telegraphed Mr. Mitchell, the principal on the note, in regard to its validity. He was soon apprised by that gentleman that it was a forgery. He immediately uolified the police, who searched lor the alleged forger, aud found him iuL. Gerlaeh's saloon. He was arrested, taken to jail aud searched. A number ot notes was found on his person for different amounts, some signed aud some unsigned. The note traded to Mr. Jepsou was iudorsed by James Smith. The stranger claimed that this was his name, also, but that he was no relation to the indoiser. He stated that he lived about six miles this side of Petersburg, and had traded a sorrel horse lor the note supposing it was good. The fellow was almost scared to death, aud gave a very incoherent account of himself. He hasn’t a tough appearauce, aud it is probable, from the bungling way he managed the affair, this is about his first offense. The name “James Smith'* which he gave is ki all probability an assumed one. From a letter on his person his real name is James Fowler. —Daviess County Democrat. Amusements. Flaiu Drank. % Two men, one a married man and the other a boy jusi getting to he a mau in statue but taking steps to be anything else than a man are reported to have induced itvo pupies to drink whisky enough to make them drunk. They fed the sensible brutes on meat and starved them for water until they were thirsty euough to drink whisky either diluted or iu some other shape. The fact that the puppies had to be starved to drinking whisky illustrates how much wiser they are than men who drink it teadily. It is said that, if a pup is kept drunk for a week or so, it will not grow any afterward. This illustrates the harmful effects ot whisky.
