How can a paper be publshed for nothing? A pension of nearly $13,u.<i has just been allowed William Wilson, an insane inmate of the poor farm of Vermillion county. Evansville will vote at the next April election to change the name of that city to Lamasco. Some think the change would be tho worse. The officers of the Red Meu at Washington are: Sachem, Sam Mattingly ; Senior Sagntorr, D. J. Ragsdale; Keeper of Wampum, Philip Hart. The ladies of the aid society request the Democrat to say that they are specially thankful for the liberal Thinksgifing donations that were recently made by the several churches. The thirty-seventh annual session of the State Teachers Association will be held at Plymouth chnrch, Indianapolis, Dec. 29, 30 and 31. Reduced rates on railroads and at the hotels. Stale Superintendent LaFollette has called a special meeting of the County Superintendents of Indiana for the 29th inst. to consider what this State ehail do in the way of an educational exhibit at the World’s Fair. A business block was wiped out by fire at Washington last Saturday. The losses are about $82,000; insurance $42,000. BMBSlJgJJLgSSLSOUSSSSSSBSB A NEW RAILROAD. A New Road That Coaid he Male Pratt uhle to Petersburg aad Pike County. The stockholders of a company met at the office of the Novt Albany banking Co. in New Albany ou Sionday of last week, and organized a company to build the | Monon bianch from French Lick to Evansville via. Jasper. The following directors were ^chosen for the first year: J. C. Fawcett, F. H. Allison. Alex. A. Anther, (’has. J. Jewett, Greenbury Cnnnon, Ferdinand Schneider and NbhIsii Haskins. It is intended to build a railroad from French Lick to Evansville via. Jasper, and some valuable coal deposits near the line dividing Dubois and Pike counties, and near Selvin in Warrick county. The contract foi: construction, heretofore made, wan approved, and the bond of the contractors received. The directory then adjourned, to meet again this week to chooser he President and Secretary, after some other uecessary preliminaries are completed. We are informed the company has three detailed surveys and profiles of the road from French Lick to Jas|ter, heretofore made by engineer corps of other companies, and a preliminary survey of the linelroin .Jasper to Evansville, and that the money for.comstrnctfon has already been provided for, and work will be pushed as fast ms possible. The construction of this line clear through will fill “a long felt want” of the people, as it will open a competing liue for business with the present Mackey roads, and the Monon is able to make the competition so effective as to create a genuine boom in business all along the route. Now is Petersburg’s chance. If the citizens hero know their interest they will make an effort to have the road come to this place. A trial will do uo harm.
Street-working has ceased. ABOUND TOWN. The crossing of the streets were much improved during the last month. Marshall Myers has had seme I rouble keeping rioters of both sexes i n check. In the county bastile are four women who were placed there for ! prostitution and adultery. Two men and two women, who were arrested for the same crime, gave bail and will answer at court with the other lour —eight in all and still there are some to hear from. Passing about town reveals the fact that Christmas is soon to be here. At II. Rich rich’s is one of the greatest varieties of jewelry and Christmas goods ever displayed in an Indiana town. Bergen, Oiiphant, Si Co. are also this year making a specialty of Christmas goods and have a due line of the most desirable article*. There are also many bthcr displays, hut their owners do not know the value of printer's ink and wilt therefore not make so much uaouey as their wiser contemporaries.. ^_ “Smoky Row.” There is a vile den in this city known as“Sm«kv Row,” and it is not only a standing disgrace to the community, but an abominable nuisance that should long since have abated. Row after row lias occurcd in that disreputable neighborhood, arrest after arrest has been made by the officers, and yet the place gets no better. In fact it grows worse, and it is only a question of time that“Smdky Row” will be the scene of. a bloody murder. Last Friday night some colored men loaded up wit|L whiskey and went down to take in the “Row.” They were refused admittance by the inmates of the houses, and the result was u general distuibance in which stones were thrown amj several shots were fired. One colored man received a wound in his side, and it is a wonder that 6ome one wasn’t killed. Two of the men Were arrested and brought before ’Squire McCalFerty, but the inmates of the houses that were raided could not indentify them, and they were released. This is a sample of the way the disturbances ou“Smoky Row” end, aud onr people are getting very tired of the whole business.— Washington Advertiser. _ Not let Settled. While Sam Marsee and Walter Mitchell, both of. Petersburg, and Frank Thomas, theu of this county, now of Oakland City, wero at the Washington Fair last Full, They were arrested and lodged in jail by Marshall Cavanaugh at Hie instigation of a farmer named Zitikins, who accused them of having robbed his house a few miles from Washington. The boys proved their whereabouts at the time the robbery was committed and were released. Duriug tho arrest they were abuied, called thieves, and otherwise humiliated. After the boys came bonne they employed Posey and Ely and subsequently W. F. Townsend to bring suit against Cavanaugh aud Zinkius for damages. A change was taken by the plaintiffs from Washington. Last week Marsee’a case caino up for trial at Viuceiincs. It resulted in a hung jury, all of whom were in favor of giving Marsee da&ages, but they differed as to the animnnls, some wauling to put it at $501^00 aud some Next Friday evenin r^Piiajg k Jenkins, of f)ul*«uw Co lege, rnfneioaj ture at the Presbyterian church in this place, on a subject that ought to be Leard by everyone, especially by the young people. “Call He Pet Names Darling.” To a Student ol the English language the nainas invented by the Mt. Carmel boys for the local demi monde must be intensely amusing. Here are a lew sample shots: Grip Sack, Soup Bone, Kangaroo, Red Jacket, Black Calf, While Fawn, Harness Figgcr, Imagination, Dying Calf, Fast Wagon, Peach and Honey, Flat Wheel. Officer McCarthy" tried to suppress the noise' and be was given Shakes|>eare with great emphasis, insomuch that he placed the Shakespenrean disciples under arrest and City Marshal Hahn filed affidavits charging Intoxication before Esq Jackson and the cases will be heard at 7 o’clock this evening.—Vincennes Sun. Report has it that the above named gentlemen beat the case agaiust themselves. The jury at Priaeeton, Ind„ gave a verdict of $3,009 to ex-Couductor Marshal Lafferty in his damage suit against the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad Company for malicious prosecution. Suit was brought ior $100,000. The case lias been on trial for nearly two weeks and was one of the most hotly contested cases ever tried in Indiana. Although not *a financial victor, the plaintiff claims a moral victory over the company, as the case was being watched by conductors ail over the country, and as flie principal issue in the case was the“spotter” system on conductors. Ex-Congressman Johu E. Lamb and McNutt & McNutt, of Torre Haute, were the principal counsel for Lafferty, and Ramsey, Wilson aud Barton, of Cincinnati, for the compauy. Neither side is entirely satisfied with the verdict. A blaze, just north o f Petersburg, created excitement enongli to call out the Fire Department Monday evening. It proved to be a small barn that belonged to C. C. LeMasfers, and contained some lumber and coru fodder, all of which, with tho barn, burned. The people in that neighborhood think the fire was the work of an incendiary. The loss was perhaps a hundred or more dollars, with small insurance. The Oakland City Record has passed its first milestone—one year has gone since it became a living “issue.” It takes hustling to make a new paper a success. That Mr. Armstrong has done the hustling no one will dispute. So far the Record has done well and will enter a new volume with a certauty of success. May its good work never wan.
