The Democrat will hereafter be issued mi Wednesday morning instead of Thursday, in order that (lie paper may in due season reach its destination in the southern and southeastern portions of the county. The mail routes make very poor connections, lienee the necessity of the change in publication day. Our correspondents who_do not live so that a communication will reach us on the day it is mailed will please mail their items to (lie Democrat on Saturdays, as we have changed our publication days to Wednesdays instead of Thursdays. An examination for teachers was held at Winslow, Saturday, a. One peacli-orchard of 12,000 trees, near Madison, will not have 5 bushels of fruit. A large fatality among children is reported from several neighboring counties. C* The Dubois county Teachers’ Institute will begin July 21st and continue one week. * A case or two of flux is reported in llie city. Miss Mattie Carson is tme of the sufferers. Ten of Crawfordsvllle’s “best citizens” were captured in agambliughons'i raid the other night. On the 8th of July the Knox County assembly F. AI. B, A. will meet at Vincennes and probably continue in session for I wo day s. See the Petersburg maikets as well as those of St. Louis, Louisville, Cincinnati, Chicago and New York olscu here in this paper. Bound trip tickets from Petersburg to Indian Springs, $2.25. Tickets good going for two days, and returning within sixty days. Princeton people are disputing about whether they shall have water works or electric lights. It. will bo a good while before that town will have either. A good many of Petersburg Citizens have signified Ihcir intentions of going to Ol well on the Fourth. Some will go to Vincennes, and others to Evansville. Train loads of cross-ties have been going up and down the E. & I. railroad this week. The road is sadly in need of them, and will soon be under better repairs. llie A. M. E. church will hold a basket meeting at Parker’s Grove, cast end of Alain street, next Sunday. A minister from Evansville will ba present and preach, ’ All are invited. Demoiost contests for Prohibition medals are moro numerous than ever. Very few of the town people ever take part in these literary exercises, and tins contests are, therefore, principally confined to the country people. A. II. Alexander and George L. Miss Lottie DcMotl, of Otwell, has been employed to leach tlie intermediate department of the Petersburg public schools. Sbe is an able and experienced teacher, a professional pedagogue of the first class.
Adjudged Insane. Zachnriuh Stephens and Miss Julia A. Shepard, lwth of Monroe township, tins county, have been adjudged insane. Drs. Lance and Osborn were flic physicians in both cases. Miss Shepard was taken before ’Squire J VV. Bildcrhack, near Pleasautviile. Mr. Stephens' case was taken before ’Squire Shoulders, about two miles from the same :own. Both Stephens and the lady will he taken to Indianapolis for treatment in the insane asylum at that city. Miss Shepiyd is not in so critical a condition as is Stephens, though she constantly shows signs of insanity. When she sees a gentlemen she thinks he Is the sheriff, a lid when she secs a woman persists in calling her the priest. The unfortunate woman is at Iter home in Monroe township. Mr. Stephens was brought to Petersburg Monday and confined in the county jail. lie is a raving maniac, and when he was arrested he resisted with such force that it took several men to handle him. The doctors and both magistrates came to the city Monday, and liic papers requisite to the removal of the poor sufferers to the asylum were made out, and they will soon he taken to that institution for treatment. The causes of insanity in their respective cases cannot be determined with anything like certainty, though it is safe to conclude that had health aiid the intensely hot weather have had much to do with unbalancing their minds. AT COtfcgy. ' Cases That Hare Been Tried and Dismissed or Continued. ' The court proceeding since last Wednesday was as follows: The ‘ caseof S. Harrell against Win. B. Hart roll, Maud llarrcll, Perry W- Chap5 pell guardian of Maud Harreli, Emery j Harrell, and Redick Harrell came up for trial. It is a partition suit, and ( the plaintiff filed answer to Wm. and Rcdcrick Harrell anti also a reply to . the answer of Maud Harrell, and ’ Maud Harrell filed answer to Wm. B. and Roderick Harrell- Thus the case . was left on tho first day. ( The ca«e of Ida M. Taylor vs. Lpuie , Hisgcn for bastardy was continued, t and will be nollied if the defendant .; shall bo true to his vows which he ( made when he married the girl. The Walter A. Wood Company, in . a suit on note, against Lewis Traylor, . got judgement for $300 and $25 at- . torney’s tecs. .. On Thursday, the case of Ella Jes- | sup against John W. Jessup, Charlotte Jci-sup and Frederick Jessup to declare John W. Jessup to be insane and appoint- a guardian, came up for trial. This case laded the most { of the latter part of last week. It ended and was taken under advisement, the judge not yet having decided. Theodosia Cooper got a divorce from her husband, Alvalt Cooper, together with judgement for costs and $25 attorney's fees. Clarence Parker filed the second paragraph to a complaint against John 1* Summer on account. Again the Ilarreil trial came up and was postponed until Friday. The case against Daniel Grubb for assult and battery, which was explained briefly in these columns last week, was continued. The case of Elijali Rumble against Jas. E. Davidson, for abuse of stock, was taken up, and jndement was rendered in favor of the defendant and the defense was made to pay the cost. Another case between Dr. Herman Schenek and Joha'Shafor was brought before the court. This is a case for slander and damages. It was continued, and will probably bo taken out of flic conntv. John Heilman brought suit agSlinst Frederick Sicktuau to collect a judgment of $(i0. It was tried and resulted in favor of tlie plaintiff who, in addition to the $60, got judgement tor costs.
Walter A. Woods Company, in a suit against Joe Patterson and I). Martin, gave bond for costs, and the case was continued. The same Company against Lewis Traylor filled a cost bond, and the case continued. The case of the State in relation to Isaac Higgins as guardian of Thelda J. Coppuck, against John M. White, the former guardian of the Coppuek woman, Whose properly, it is alleged, was not economically managed, came before the court. ' The defendant moved the court to publish depositions in his behalf. This motion was sustained by the court and the case has not yet ended. Deaths. /Mrs. Ellen Coombs, near Algiers, died June 25, 18H0, of consumption. Interment look place 'he following day. She was JO years old. Infant son of Win. Itees, aged only five months, died June 23,1890. Infant son of Daniel Crow, aged about six months, died June 23, 1890. Samuel Motion, an aged citizen, who has lived in this county many years, died last Sunday. A more particular account of his life ami death will bo published In next issue. ^ Watered Stock. Oren Snyder will go to Clay City next Saturday in sweet pursuit of a fair flower that he expects to shortly transplant in Petersburg. John Older and his sister, Miss ltosa, Miss Mary Buck, of Princeton, and Fred Michel, ot Louisville, were Ihe guests of Win. Liibs and family, Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. James Shawhan have been seeking health and pleasure at Spencer Mineral Springs the past week or two, and E. J. Lingo, deputy postmaster, returned from that resort Monday afternoon. Mrs. J. B. Young surprised her husband last Saturday, his thirtyeighth birthday. Secret preparations had been going on, and a sumptaons birthday dinner was prepared. Mr. Young's sister, Mrs. J, B. Hoover, j who has not been able to walk since she met w ith a serious railroad aecidenl about a year ago, was assisted to her brother’s residence, and created a most agreeable surprise for him.
