He will soon after go, as a missioucry, to Persia. The “white caps” are again on the war path in Orange county. This time Win. Strother, residing four miles south-east of Paoli, was the victim. He was taken from his home one night last week and whipped outrageously, and was at the same time uotiiied that if he did not leave the Community within seven days they would iiang him. A great deal of excitement is occasioned over the outrage, tliis being the seeoqd beating he received. The matter trill be investigated by the grand jury. Strother was a gallant soldier during the rcbeilion.—Ilunteni/bur/ Ary us. It will bo remembered that W. F. Gregory, o£ West Ford, Crawford county, was shot by Lizzie Davis’s father, for detaining Miss Davis in a Louisville hotel. It pitxluced more trouble than most eases of even so bad character. The ease has been dismissed from the courts. Miss Davis is insane from the trouble aud is said to be dying; Gregory’s father lost his intnd from the same cause, i and Miss Davis’s father is also insane I from Ihe hellish conduct of one whose' reason and decency failed to properly govern him.
IT COURT. . Cases That Hare Been Tried aai Dismissed or Coatlaaed. The mill of justice still grinds away. Up to going to press the conrt has ; 'done as follows: Continued the case against William J. Hays .for assault and battery. Trial of Herman Schenk against John Schafer. This trial lasted a part of two days and was decided by the jury in favor of the defendant. It was a suit for the surety of the peace. Evidence of threats by Schafer was produced, but a “befuddled” jury found it proper to consider evidence not produced in court and decided after “hanging” for hours, as above stated. The case of Staters.Perry II. Pride and W. C. Snyder, forfeiture of bond before Justice of Peace, was continued on plaintiff s motion. State vs. Thos. Bropcs for larceny came up. Bropes plead not guilty and was tried. The jury stood six for conviction and six for acquittal and having thus disagreed, the case is still in conrt.
State vs. Sydney Wyatt for trcspess. This case was. tried by the court and Mr. Wyatt was released. Case against R. Miley and MeXabb, Jr. accused of having received goods stolen from a store in Algiers some time ago, was continued on motion of prosecuting attorney. State of Indiana against Daniel B. Grubb for assult and battery was continued by consent of the parties concerned. This case was appealed from ‘Squire Itccd's docket, (his town. Two boys, one of them 6rubb’s, were fighting. Grubb slashed them both with a whip. They separated, Grubb’s boy running away. The oilier cursed Grubb who in turn hit him again with the whip, this time leaving its mark. Thus came this trial in two courts. The State of Indiana vs.Wni. Stork for damages come up. It seems that he shot a dog which had attacked a wagon be was driving. The dog was persistent and of bad character, as, from the evidence, was the young man so far as concerns his disposition tabe persistent in indiscretions. The dog belonged, when living,' to one Mr. Sokclfield. The “tog ish now tead,” and, according to the decision of the jury is still worth $25., Tbis they required Mr. Stork to pay Mr. Sokelfichl and decreed that he should also pay the expenses of the court. Over the remains of this “ted tog” many of the good citizens of Stendal spent several hours at the county’s temple of justice—hours that might have been better spent. » Cleiiie Woodry in a divorce suit against her husband, Sherman Woodry, has been granted single blessedness and her supposed desire to live free from all obligations to lean on any arm but her own for two years at least, for she is divorced, and is, moreover, prohibited from marrying again under two years. Tbe case of Elizabeth Hawkins vs. her husband, Allen T. Hawkins for divorce lias hot been tried Mrs. Hawkins lias placed tbe case out of Judge Welborn’s hands and prefers some other judge. It will bo tried about July 4th. Peerless Reaper Company vs. Jas. II. Ward, Tlies. Ward, and Catharine Ward on note; verdict for plaintiff. Mrs. Rufus Hays was granted a divorce from her husband. Mrs. Samuel McClure failed to establish sufficient evidence and did not get a divorce from her husband. Mrs. Biickhannan Chance got a divorce from her husband who deserted her about six years ago. John Holman sued Fred Sigmond ou account. This case was taken under advisement and has not yet been decided. Case of Lizzie Traylor vs. Thus. Traylor, divorce and custody of child, is continued till July 5th, when it will come up before Judge Reinhart, Mr. Traylor swearing that he cannot expect justice before Judge Welboin. This case promises some sensational developments that ought to make a few old ring tricksters’ back hair curl. Hot Such A Bad Day After All. . Lee surrendered Friday. Moscow was burned Friday.
