It is frequently said that farmers almost invariably represent crops greatly injured by unfavorable seasons, and especially is Ibis so with regard to wheat prospects. The prospects iti Pike county are not as go_od as we would like to see. Everywhere in Indiana wo get about the same kind t».f report as that we clip from tiie Oakland City Record. It is a failindex of tlie whole state and of this county, and is as follows: -‘The editor oft he Record has made a personal examination of several! wheat fields in each of the following townships, Barton, Center, Columbia, Johnson, Pataka and White River, with this result: Barton, wheat .not regular’ on ground, and very uneven in height ; farmers say the freeze in March killed fully oua-half. Some fields, however, show no signs of damage but they are few and far between. Center, the stalks look healthy, but many fields will not pay toy harvesting owing to I he fact that from one-half to twothirds <jf the stalks wore killed by the freeze, leaving the stalks “shattering” on the ground. Many fields show up badly, as the wheat is uneven, now and then a few feet of fine growth and then for several rods the ground is bare Columbia, uneven in height, some fields showing only “patches'’ of good wheat. West of Oakland City, several fields, noticeably on E. C. Farmer’s fai-m the prospects are good for an average yield. In tlie eastern .portion of Johnson the farmers will be satisfied with a half yield-; while in the western portion about Ft. Branch- and Ilaubstadt, it is in belter condition, some fields damaged but. lilile if any. Patoka, prospects are fair for a two-thirds to threefourths erop. In White River the damage by over flows from White River and its tributaries, and the March freeze, will amount to considerable, and the entire township will, from indications, fall hilly fifty per cent, bel»\v an average.”
