Night before last fire destroyed three bams on the square just south of the public square, oue belonging to Dr. W. II. Russell, oue to Mrs. John Trafter, and one to R. P. Hawthorn. The fire broke out just as the audience was assembled to hear a lecture at the court house by Prof. T. J. Craig, of Purdue University. From there aud from other parts of the town hundreds of people rushed to the scene—a blaxe larger than which is seldom seeu, as the barns were tiled with hay, straw, and other combustible substances, all in perfect condition for burning quickly. The fire eugiue was soon ou the ground, aud was made ftst to a well in R. P. Hawthorn's yard. This was soon emptied, and also two other wells, the contents beiug pored upon the houses and out building uear and attached to, the Trafter and Hawthorn incidences, thus preventing the spreading of the fire to those buildings. Meanwhile Dr. Russell's residence by means of buckets, though this building, at limes caught fire, was saved. A smoke house near by was toiu down and dragged away by means of the hooks belonging to the company. There was no insurance on the buildings worth mentioning. Dr. Russell's barn was fUllof horses when the fire broke out. They were saved with one exception—a mare belonging to Di. Loetxneh was burned in the stable, The Are was not the worx of an includiary, but was the result of carelessness of the worst kind. A young man uaiued Bacon went into the loft to get hay for the horses at a ; little before eight o'clock, and was cureless enough to take a lantern with him. Tills, in some manner, either by being let fall, or by exploaion, or what not, act ire to tho hay that burned like tinder.

Ceuutarfaltm. Near Pikeville, this county, a band of counterfeiters was discovered a few days ago. They had been passing spurious coins in the denominations of live aud ten cent pieces. Constable Charles Ferguson, of Lockhart township, saw one of the gang pass a coin to the postmaster at Pikeville. Tlie postmaster understood the game that was being played, and took the coins without retusal, till he got some seventy cents of the base metal. On Sunday night, accompanied by a deputy whose name we have not learned, Constable Ferguson went to the house of the counterfeiters and arrested them. One is Daniel Daviess the other his brother, Brown low, and the other, their uiiclc, William MoRuunols.
