To nr that two prominent persons died when Mrs. K. B. Hayes’ and Simon Can. emu's eyelids were kissed down for eternity only last surely week iwpliea that Mrs. Hayes was prominent for a work not all her owa effort; and that Simoa Cameron came into his glory hy force of his own char, aeter and l>y his own effort. It requires no strain upon the mind of the student of political economy to tell why Mis. Hayes was a prominent person in American history. Many women scarcely noticed have been her superior, though their workfor God and man will go on for good to the race, so font; as the great world shall go spinning down the ringing grave of change. True, Mrs. Hayes has a history as has every good woman in Arne ica. She, with all the others, deserves the pause and esteem in which she is held by her countrymen. So do the tens of thousands of &wd women aU over the land of the five m the brave. With the unavoidable consent of the people and with God’s predestined cousent, she has gone to that loqg iftrne where hearts ami heads shall count alike. In contemplation of the final end of nil living, let us hope, for the young and old, for the rich and poor, for matron and maid, for king and serf, that ia spite of all the doubts and fears that can be woven of the warp and woof of utystery and death, it may bo best—who kuows? Of Mrs. Hayes, it is well; she filled the mission to which she was called. But, iu Simon Cameron, we have a character which made itself. When young he took a position
wii « cvuijiwiiui cow iu a {inuuu^ uwrv. He worked up to a cabinet portfolio. All along his Ufe there is feed tor thought; ami discoveries to be made by any young man for great encouragement, llis whole life is a history of a diminutive world in which Cameron himself moved and had his being and made its master’s influence to he felt by the satellites which moved about it. However groat a man may be, he will And that a multitude of difficulties may outweigh his single greatness. This Cameron felt, llad it not been for local dissensious, he would have gone to the head of the nation. Anyhow he would have been the candidate of his |mrty at one time. He would have made the race that Liueoln won, hut lor these accursed local dissensions that otten nils a worthy candidate. But Cameron had done too much noble work, aud Pennsylvania waa uot enthusiastically for him. Yon will remember that wbeu dames Buchanan was called (tom Russia, he concluded to go to Baltimore aud practice law, aud would have done so had it uot been for Simon Cameron who persuadvd him to remain in Pensylvania. Alter this Cameron [took it in his head that Buchanan ought to be a United States Senator, aud, more than auy other mau, was instrumental in electing him. All know the reslfit. From the 3state Buchanan weut to the Presidency. ad Buchanan been relegated to private life, Stephen A. Douglas would have beeu President, in which event there would have been no split in the Democracy—would have been nu Southern Democracy arrayed against a Northern Democracy, for Douglas was the man, and the only mau, who urged, and succeeded iu every attempt, a compromise between the North and South, except bis attempt By speech making to re-unite the North and South after the war was ou— an undertaking too great tor mortal man. Had Douglas gone to the Presidency, the rebellion would, perhaps, have never beeu. Not then, anyhow. Cameron and Greety nominated Lincoln; and, because of dissensious like those that had before then injured Cameron, Lincoln was.etected aud all the Democrats were defeated. Cameron was made Secretary of war and made the defence of Washington City safe by making advance purchases of supplies, for thus he made the organization of au army possible. With less foresight and vigor, like that possessed by Seward, who afterward became Secretary and thought the war would he "only a breakfast spoil” and would “not last more than sixty days,” the ending of the Unit year of the rebellion would have been most disastrous. But Cameron's influence dhl not stop bore. He came borne from Rusia, and by communications with the State Legislatures, he started a move to nominate Liuooln for a second term, which nomination was forced malnl y by the different Legislative Bodies of the North, though t was contrary to the wishes o f the majuity of the North. Kverybudy know what rnomectioue results hinged upon that event. A nation was to he saved or a nation was to be lost. Compromise and immediate peace were entirely beyond the reach of any earthly power. Neither a Lincoln nor a Uoulus could have elected such a thiug, The rebelllou was alreadv on, and the reeults had to be reached witburtb* beat possible conditions for the Uubm—one and undivided if possible. During the whole drama, what player took a more important part, or did his company auy more fruitful work, than Simon Cameron? Mis life In connection with the other premiueut men of his dny and age is worth study lug. Surely a conspicuous figure disappeared from view wheu the grave swollowed up Simoa Cameruu!
