Last Thursday night lire at Huntingburg destroyed property to the amount of $200,000.00, partially insured. Sixteen houses were burned. The fire is supposed to have been the work of an incendiary. A remarkable illustration of horsetraining was shown at Berridge’s stable in this place, last, Saturday, when M. 8. L’uder the new law requiring the execution of condemned persons in the Stale prisons instead of by the sherifl iu the county where convicted, says the Evansville Tribune, the first person to be hanged will be William Benson, tbe young man who committed a murder in Clark county with idea of removing the chief obstacle to Ills marriage to his sweetheart, a girl named Sallie Snider. The date of the execution is August 16. The law provide^hat the schoolfund loau be divided among the counties on the basis of the vote for secretary of state. The guests were elaborate in their praise of the viand* which were so bountitttlly served at the table, and all felt that they had had a feast which surpassed those of the Romans. Sweeney, of Dubois county, will hold his last examination on next Saturday, May 25th, at Jasper. This will be the 107th examination he has held In eight years. In that time he has examined 2,186 sets of teachers'manuscripts, which contained about 174,880 questions, prepared by the Slate Board ot Education. Uftheunuibci of applicants examined 953 failed, or a Jittlc more thau 43 per ccut. He has conducted eight County Institutes, aud 103 Township Institutes, and was President of the Southern Indiana Teachers’ Association in 1883. In connection with the State Board, by (special appointment, he helped prepare ‘‘The County Institute Outline for Iudiana” in 1885, and the “Graduates’ Questions” for the State, iu 1886. This same year he was uominated by the Democratic partv ot Indiana, and defeated, with the rest of the ticket, for State Superintendent of public Instruction. After thit eventful educa-; tional career, covering a period of 14 vean, he has concluded to abandon educational pursuits, and enter the practice of law at Jasper. At the grocery store of T. K. He took ill sometime ago aud was supposed to have recovered, when he suddenly grew worse and ; has not beeu out since. Chappell and Miss Annie Sununei ville were married atj Vincennes yesterday. Vollie Uoggatt, the thlrteen-year-old son of Chap and Amanda Hoggatt, died at his parents’ residence in this place, Tuesday fore-nooa. He had been complaining for soma time, and suddenly took worse and soon died. The funeral took place yesterday at 2 p. m. An older son, Loo., is also sick. He waa taken 111 when he learned of his brother’s death, aud has been rather seriously. John F. Ash, of Pike county, has purchased of the Lafayette Block Farm the fine young stallion ‘‘Black Clay.” “Black Clay” is a grandson ot “Castas M. Clay.” The noted sire of “Black Clay’s” dam was by “Royal George.” “Black Clay” is a coal black, coming three years old, and is a very fast colt, lie was purchased when very yonng by Mr. Jeff Crouch, and has been brought np at the Lafayette form. He is considered one of the best bred colts in Indiana, and took the first prize at the Tippecanoe county fair last fall.
