wkj Pont Ifrfjt * Why do not the high taut, prohibition tariff orgausfsay anything about the fact that the price of wool in the United States rose immediately aflej the redaction of thetarifl on that article In 1883 ? They might, if they would, explain that three grades of woo! used in the factories of the United Stales—two coarse grades grown in the United 8tates, and a fine grade that cau not he produced here, but which the factories bust import That when the tariff was partly removed in 1883, the import of the line grade was increased, aud the home demand for the two coarser grades grown here to mix with the liner grade was increased, and, as a consequence, the price of the tanner's product here was proportionately increased. Yes, these high tax organs might make these honest explanations, if they would, aud we think they would if they were not afraid tl«p people would become well enough informed to vote against their needs whose success depends upon the manufacturing monopolist whose advantage over the common people is maintained by the present Republican party. They might also explaiu that tree wool will make the home lomand for wool still greater, for free wool, like free Cinchona bark has lone for quinine, would tend to increase the number of factories and compel the manufacturer to keep his machinery and hands busy during the year, would enlarge the manufacturer's business aud increase his profits and his demand for labor. The Petersburg News said last week that the Winslow News would come out that day for the Republican cause. Sure enough, on the same day, the Winslow News was printed in that way, containing some ’of tlie very saute articles found in the Petersburg Press, Verbal its et Literatim, as though the satne mau were editing both papers. It is strange that the Republican editors iu Petersburg should have known what was going on iu the tuind of Mr. Black, of the Wiuslow News, for those Republican editors do n>t lore each other any too well. Mav be the man who closed the bargain all around knows something interesting if he would tell it. Mr. Black got mad, very mad, sometime ago, because the Democrat passed a slight critism on his publishing an article which he did not think partisan. Now that the people know that the Democrat was right about the Winslow News being a stalwart Republican paper, it is well settled that the Democrat generally knows what it talks about. A al Care liable Opinio*. •s — — The Journal received a pleasant call Monday morning from Dr. li. Pagln, a staunch Kepuh ican of Velpen, Pike county, Ind. Old Pike has heretofore been Democratic but the Doctor says that a poll of the voters recently taken ■hows a clear Republican majority of 100. This the Republicans have resolved to increase to 300. He Is confident that were the election to occur to-day Indiana would go Republican by fully 25,000 majotity. The election of Posey over Parret t for Congress in the first District he regards as almost assured. Posey’s popularity with the soldiers and the colored men is what will do it. The Doctor is so well pleased with the Journal that he not only i ubsoribes for it himself but also sends it to three of his neighbors.—Alb an Journal. Dr. Pagan, who is well known throughout this couuty, is the man who has had divorce suits in the courts of Pike and other counties. His disgraceful oouduct in these suits and others is well kuowm. Persous who have had dealing with him could not bo made to ltelieve that his opinions are worth anything whatever. The truth is that Pagau does not enjoy the confidence of his own party, and does not know, and would not be allowed to know, thuparty’s secrets. His statement tliat Indiana will go 25,000 for the Republican candidates illustrates the unreliability of his judgeincut. We doubt ifanyone who has done business with Mm, or who knows him, however much he might be prejudiced politically, would place any couildonce lu what he would say ou any subject.

. 8till At It, Tbm flimry pretense of friendship far the soldier by the Democrat id the thlneet thing out. If you really had tM remotest friendly feeling in this direction you would spent a good word for the r*-aniou to be held here next week.—Petersburg Press. The Petersburg Press has said much to draw the Democrat into a quarrel about the re-uniou, all the time trying to create the belief that the Demcrat was oppose ! to the re-uniou. As the Democrat has done nothing but what has been for the benefit of the re-union, the writer of the articles in the Press certainly knows that he lied about the matter. He does this kind of meanuess for the purpose of doing, as he hopes, some harm to the Democrat. The Republican papers ot this town have done more against the re-uniou by their false assertions than could have been done in any other way. If there has been any one thing which the Democrat has wanted more than any other thing, that was a re-union without any partisautsnr. If the Press wanted such good will and harmony, why did it try, by all that is evil and uuf&lr, to get up a political row ? On the day that the Press published the above scurrilous article, the Democrat advertised the re-union-rday and date. We are not running a paper for the benefit of the Press, and do not propose that the Press, or any individual, shall dictate just how much space shall be devoted in the Democrat to free advertising. We cannot think the writer of the clipping is not a liar. We are sorry that he will stoop to such meanness, but we are at the end of our faith in his truthfulness. Such is a scandal aud a shame to anv editor, There are, ou the files of his paper, five lies which wecau prove to be such. He kuows tins. The wonder to us is that he continues this pernicious practice. It is more like the act of a crazv man. We arc sincerely sorry tor him. ‘'As treachery and'! falsehood recoils upon the perpetrator and destroy him,’’so must the editor of the Press lose the confidence of the whole people. He wilt have to desist from his pernicious practice. For his, and the community’s sake, we sincerely hope that he will. X.1S.—The five lies «lo not include the one about Captain Evans. A Failure. The Democratic pole raising at this j place last Saturday was a dismal fail- j ure. llad weather amt bad management trill prevent success tn any attempt. The people sire not to blame for the bad weather, but they are to blame lor b%d management. Even tbe Republicans would uot have been guilty ot such a failure. Democrats, you need not expect the popularity of the candidates to be sufficient for auy party. “Git up and gitI* A few Republicans of the United States Senate, after complainiug of Cleveland’s Retaliation Measures, now waut to go to the trouble of annexing Canada to the U. S. They commenced this thing as politics! thunder. We should like to ask what those stalwart Republicans would do about Canada salt and lumber of which they nave complained so much. They may carry their joke too far, as Cleveland has nerve enough to do auy thing, if he ouiy thinks it is right. If there be as much in Southern outrages as is claimed by Republicans, why did they not suppress iit duriug the quarter century they had absolute rule of the goverumeut? The only use they have ever made of these outrages was putting of Hays iu the President’s chair. A great service it was to the rich classes. PatssiDEXT Cleveland avows the d ootr i n e that the farmers and consumers of this country ought not to pay A tax for the benefit of a privileged few.
