The Democracy of the United States have about all spoken, and " Cleveland i. the man/ " The Republican press is terribly ; afraid Gov. Gray will be nominated ! for yicc-prcsideiil next month. » Tttr Uepublic-tis In Congress have decided not to Introduce a tariff bill, lint to light the Duioc.als on ivdiic- ^ ing tine tariff. Tnt: Evansville Journal says m>liody with any sen*c ever thought the Republican* had any caao again* Senator Turpie.
OM.r one man in this world ran prevent the nomination of Cleveland lty acclimation, ami that man is Urover Cleveland. b'-'U'-"" - .. Man v will be the Republican votes cast for tax reform. The puzzling feature of it will be the inability ol the g. o. p. to know where the votes for Cleveland will come frotn. Ihtrmtejui Ticket: For Presi •lent, li.P. Hates; For Vice-Presi-dent, John J. Ingafl-. Platform: 1 Moody shirt,-fraud of 1376, and malign went of American heroes, if they lie Democrats. Thu Republican papers of the 1st district should not judge the mass of soldiers from the noise made by a few able-bodied fellows who want to get into the treasury worse lhau ibe rebel* ever did. Since President J^lcvelaiid’s able state papers gave the g. o. p. such a shaking up wcjiear nothing of I lie ••American Cyclopedia,*' or his Ho vole wife's” being his poUiieal guide oveiseer, and ruler. « Tnc country is to be congratulated upon the maintenance of the dignity of the (.iovorniaeut abroad, ami of peace and tranquility at home under the wise ami patriotic administration of President Cleveland. The Indianapolis Sln-k-Si*. and the present State officer* may take down their shingles out they writeIheir claims; for, if i take not. there are many in the icaufauks who will not supfur anything.
Peace vs, War, Otiv Republican friend#, who are doing tlicir licst to keep up the hatred that grew out of the strife of ISffiJto IStVj, ami who arc doing all in their power to prevent the complete unionizing of this whole nation, will do well l» pouttec earfwlly the truths we quote below front a weil-known author: “Peace is the flood tide of civlltaatibh. War is the ebb. The one bears tipoii its bosom the accumulated wealth, happiness and prosperity of nations: the oilier dose* our ports to the jjehes that would othorwiso seek us, and carries away from us our own wealth to bury it in the sea of carnage and destruction. '•Peace‘'builds up. War breaks down. Under the influence ot the former the nation flourishes, the nation thrive#. With the latter all art# languish save the bloody trade of the soldier; the mill* are silent; the workshops closed; thousands |terish on the batlle-tield, and tens of thousands perish from vraqt of shelter and food. “Peace is tfie sunshine of a people War is the storm-cloud—lurid with the baleful light of carnage. Under the vivifying rays ot the former all the gentle influences of life flourish, the cart Itsmiles with gladuess and the wilderness blossoms as the rose. Under the angry frown of the latter the fiercest passions of poor human nature take full sway—murder, lust and riot are rampant—fields lie waste for want of tillage—and death and mutilation are the oul.v crops. “Peace brings wealth ; 'var poverty. “In fine—Peace means prosperity; war, desolation.” The above, which can neither-be gainsay ed nor denied, ought to be sulfleient to forever settlo the bloody shiit question.
Yuitbtixidtr Klilrt organ* excepted, wc know of ho one who is making loud complaints of what has been done for the soldiers. The soldiers of Indiana are doing something to secure the passage of a bill which originated with the Grand Artny «>f the Kepublic of Indiana, and they hare a right to do so; l»ut we havu never heard a soldier complain of w hat has been done for him. . The soldier knows that the pension roll now reaches ♦SO.OOO.OJfl. The fact should also be borne in mind that under the present administration, more than tshOdtl soldiers have been.added to the peusiou list. We hale -to rob General llovey of auv glory, but wc arc inclined to think that .Judge l'arett can accomplish just as much, if not more, for the soldier, than the ex-Miuutvr to Pern. We believe lie could accom plish more, for trie reason that he would ba in fall sympathy with the adiiiinisiration and upon the side of the majority iu the popular branch of the-National legislature. 1 j ■ StvcK Governor Gray's induction into office ho lias been giving continues attention to the swamp-land claims of the State against the Government aud last year"be was successful in recovering indemnity for about (XXX) acres or about 412,0X0. A few days ago lie received a draft for on the same account making altogether neatly $19,030. There is yet over twenty thousand acres to bn looked after, ttic indemnity for which the Governor anticipate* no diffictily In securing. All of this money is the -ante to the state as "lindiug" it. for if life matter hail not ‘been taken hold of1 by the Governor in the way in which lu>did, and properly presented to the authorities at Wtsltiutou, nothing would ever have come ot the claim. It would seem, from the decision j handed down by the Michigan su-i prcnie court, that the framers of the local option law iu that state were a pack ot idiots who did not know the words they placed in their pet measure. They drafted a bill to regulate; and prohibit thj manufacture and1 sale of liquor.” The court held that there could he no regulation of the: traffic unless there was manufacture j and sale cf the liquor. Inasmuch as the bill also privided for absolute prohibition, there could be uo manufacture and sale. lienee the law-vas unconstitutional. It Is probable that those who drafted the measure arc now out back of the barn trying to induce a mule to kick them to daatli, while the saloonists are in high feather and joyful.
The surplus m the Federal Ireasurv should Iw Applied to the reduction ol' the principal and interest of the public debt, atul the express .authority should be given to the President bv Congress to purchase United States bonds in advance of their maturity, until such surplus shall hare been exhausted, as all schemes »e> deplete the treasury by which private interests rather Lilian the pubiie good would be subserved. The press upon Congress by lobbyists who tire to receive a large share of appropriations I to he made 1ti pursuance of such scheuie-sareyo be depreciated and condemned. as ferronotis iu principle, and corrupting in tendency. The strength of Judge Parrett is well illustrated by the consternation hi* uoruiuatiou produced in the Republican parly of this district. Par - j celt is a strong man, and a friend to just those interests which ate certain to secure his election, lie is one the few men who have the i-iflnci to do aometldug when he enters th balls of Congress (a thing he will certainly do) ami will yield an infla • ence which wiil secure to-every fac turn of his const ituen- y the very leg W. U Philadelphia, May 23d : I am very much "ratified by the >l>pwtnnity here afforded me to meet ! the representatives of the l’resbvte- ! rian Church. Surely, a man never ! <lioaM lose his interest in the welfare of the church in which Jie was reared; and yet I Hill not find fault with any une of you who may deem it an escapade, but I acknowledge that I must recall the days now long past to find my closest relatiou to the grand and noble denomination which yon represent. I -ay this because,,!hose of us wno inherit fealty to our church as I ;«io, begin early to learn those things
which make ms I’reatoyterians all the days of oiir lives and thus it Is ilia' (tie rigors of onr early leaching, by which we are groumieii In our lasting Allegiance, are etyeelali.v vivid, amh perhaps, (ho best remembered. The attendance upou church service three times each Sunday, and upon 8abba lb-school during the noon intermissHiiu, mar be irksome enough to a bov of leu or tweiv* years of age to he well fixed in his memory, but 1 have never known a man who regretted these thing* in the years of his maturity. The SI orter Catechism, though thoroughly studied and learned, was uot, perhaps, at the time, perfectly understood, and yet in the stern labors and duties of after life those are uot apt to he the worst citizens who were only taught “What 15 the chief end of man.” Speakingof these things, and in the presence of those here assembled. I mar say the most tender jhoughu crowd 141011 my mind. There are present with me now memories of a kind and offer(innate fiither, consecrated to the cause and called to his rest and his reward tn the mid-dav of his usefulness; a sacred recollection of the prayers and pious love of a sainted mother, and a family circle hallowed and sanctified by the spirit of Presbyterianism. 1 cannot l)ut express the wish and the hope that the lhvsbyteriau Church will always be at the front in every movement which promises the temporal as w ell as the spiritual advancement of mankind. 1 In the turnydl and bustle of every day life few men air foolish enough to igiior the practical value to our pcoide and our country of the church organization established among us. ami the advantage of Christian example ami teaching. While we may In pardoned for insisting that ourdemouination is tiie best, we may, 1 think, safely concede*much tiiat is good to all other churches that seek to make men better. 1 am hereto greet tin delegates of two Genera) 'Assemblies of thy I*resihytisriaa Church. One is called ‘-Northland the other “South.” The subject is too deep and intricate tor me, hut I cannot help wondering why this should he. These words so far as they denote separntijtin and esfrangeincnil, should ha- obsolete. In the councils of the Nation and in business of lire country they no longer mean reproach and antagonism. Even (lie soldier's who fought for tiro “North” and for the "8 >ut!f are restored to fraternity and unity. This fraternity and unity is taught and enjoyed by our church. Wlien she shall hertse!f be united, with all the added strength and usefulness, then harmony and union ensue. Actions Speak Loader Than Words. (laoshen Democrat,} The.reecnt Ingalls-Vnorheescontro-versy causes a pension bureau official to state that of all the congressmen of the North, Senator Ingalls of Kansas calls up the fewest number of pension *-a«es in the bureau, in other words, his iicn-ioit. correspondence is the smallest, white Senator Voorhees’s is larger than anr other member of congress, either North or South. Senator John A, L»gau used to have the1 heaviest pension list before the bureau^ but since bis death Senator Vmoriiec* takes the lend. Next to Voorhees,’ the senator who sends more letters to the iieusiou office is an ex-confederate general, viz.. Senator Cockrell of Missouri. He flies more complaints and gets more {icustous allowed than any other senator or representative, Republican or Democrat, cx«*pting only Senator Voorlices. and J. J. Ingalls less than any one member of either house of congress from the North. \Thk large annual appropriations fo\wjn stons, now exceeding the en-tjre^o-t of the federal Government before the civil war, are Unclothe fact that a'Democratic Congress passed the arrearage of pensions paid under the present Democratic administration almost doable in amount those under the Republican administration, and the Democratic party favors a just and proper {tension act which shall do ample justice to all deserving soldiers mid sailors of the United States now living, and to the widows and orphans of such as -have died from causes traceable to their service under the flag of their eouu-f “T- . .
