The California Redwood Company i was organized In Edinburg, Scot land ; in 18S3. It is a foreign company, but j it quickly made itself at home in its operations. An expert of San Kran-j cisco was hired to tramp from the ; town ot Eureka to the Klaiuath River, i atul report concerning the value of; the redwood forests in the northwest- j ccnpartof California—the finest ofj its kind in the world, lie estimated i that iu the section explored there were j about twenty two biliion feet of good I redwood timber, and that it was] worth ou the stumps not less than j one dollar per thousand feet, which! would be the suug ►••m of 122,000,000. Thereupon the Scotch Company be- j gan its work. Under our timber! laws, a niau can, if he is a bona fide settler, cuter a claim for 100 seres of; timber land. The company thereupon engaged four hundred men at a cost of 150 apiece to make entries. They filed in the land office individual claims each for 100 acres. This put the company in possession of 64.000 acres of the most valuable timber land on the globe. They have it and hold it to-day. It is doubtful if the world's history contain* a parallel to the robbery of laud which the auualsof this republic show. And how dearly we will hare to pev for it! Foreign landlord* already own here a domain twice the siac of Ireland, and the acqnisi ion is still goiuz oh. It is time to call a bait in auch matters.
