Thanksgiving Day, chiefly au American institution, was fret provided fbr by Got. Bradford, of Mass., as early as 1621. This governor was a belicTcr is prayer and praise to Almighty God, in Whose personality and divine interference he believed. He first ordered a day. of Hhansgiving after the first harvest of the New England colonies in 1621. In 1623 there was a drought, and a day was set apart for prayer. In the midst of their prayers, rain earns, and the day was changed to one of thanksgiving. After this a thanksgiving was ordered after each harvest, ami was observed whether there was abundance or not. Congress reocom mended a day of National thanksgiving each veardur ing tire eight long years of the Rebellion of the states against the old country. When the Revolution was over, aud the country was an established government under Washington, he annually appointed a day ot National Thanksgiving. These proclamations were foliowed by proclamations by the Governors of the States. During the late war Lincoln, often issued proclamations of thanksgiving after great victories; and, iu 1863, he issued such a proclamation, which embodied in its charitable words the whole couutry, reguardless of any states that were in rebellion. Custom is j tkc only thing which fixes the last Thursday of Novem ber as the day for National Thanksgiving’. The different states of the Union have, of late years, iu Imitation of the first New England Governors, been appointing a day of thanksgiving; and, to avoid twfltdays of thiskiud. the proclamation of each governor intentionally follows that of the President, aud is fixed for the same day, uaiueiv, the last Thursday in November, which, this year, is the 24th day of the month. To-day, then, is.our National Thanksgiving Day, by custom, and by formal proclama
tiuu of the lGovernor* ami me irestdent. In thinking over this question, our tlroeghlscome up with queries of whether we. ha\*e any cause for returning thanks. Some hare thought that the dry weather is no pause for rejoicing. It may not be, but uo huiuau knows it. It may be a blessing that we arc getting. Oue thlug is certain: the couutrvhas a plenty.and is doing well in almost all reapects. At least there has been uo better time iu our history as a Nation. Those who Hud nothiug for which to be thankful sh-nild compare this eouutry with others, as b* this a great lesson will be learned. Look at France with a great scandal on hands; Germany with mischief breeding among her subjects; Great Britiait is threatened with revolution flrom starving subjects; Belgium is on the verge of trouble from an attempt of its people to convert the Emperial goverumeul intoa republic; Italy is in trouble because of inability to establish a permanent ministry; Russia is all topsyturvy by tbe quarreiliug of its subjects among themselves; Moroco is in mourning for the sovereign just deceased; the Chiuese Empire is rioted with cholera; the great Congo country is all a stir from eflort* to kill Sturdy; Japan ts all upside down from disagreements; the Cauadiau parliament is in a quarrel; the government iu the Sandwitch Islands is iu serious trouble, and King KaUkaua is liable to be disposed of; half a dozen great nations are tryiug to get poscssiott of Madagascar, and thus the peaceful aud eivilized island is i n serious trouble. Look at all this, itttd much more that might be pointer! out, aud say whether we have any cause for rejoicing. It seems to us that, above all peo|tie, those of tbe United States have the most cause 10 “Praise God from whom all blearngs flow/’ When Any Vetter!
I^Kikin" at theChriiitiauiaed world, and at the <<anie time considering the difficulties of having made it so—the persecutions, the suffering of martyrdom, and the untold trials aud difficulties to which the early Crusaders of this faith were subjected: and then looking at the ainonut of crime and the necessary of avenging it that has either been brought down with the Christiau religion or created by it—one must certainly grow sick at heart, ami long with an eternal loitgiug for the time to hasleu when men can couie to do the thing that's right, aud there be no more need of this meausof punishment, the peuiteutiary and the jail, the gallows aud the gibbet. But with all oar boasted institutions, our schools, churches, and the only true religion, we have a per cent, of crime that must make a truly moral being fain t and grow sick at heart. When will t hese things grow better, says some one? If we must make answer, it must be at a time when the world; will be better than it now ta with its imperfection* of the social and governmental fabric. Iu short, there should be no law that would iute-fere with the individual rights of men. Such a thing as class legislation should not be know in a government. Each person should be allowed to use the talent he has, and the laws should not be so arranged at to legislate advantages to oue above another. Suck wonhl give the moralist a better chance at Influencing the world for the belter. As a sick man is almost in variably a mean man, so a poor than is almost always an opposing ma», in iliougbt and feelings at least. And who can tell the effect for evil ot the 111 feelings on the third and fourth generations! From these considerations it is most evident that a complete revolution of the laws of all nations is essential. That such revolution will come t here can be no doubt, (twill not come at the point of the sword nor at, the cannon's mouth.
