A Prohibition meeting was held iu Boonville last Saturday for the purpose of organizing the Prohibition party in Warrick county1, __________ At Nashua, New Hampshire, thirtythousand men are thrown out of employment by a muskrat that dug a hole through t he dam of a reservoir. Many of our exchanges are remarking that “the woods must be ou fire.’ They forget that a keen frost in the Fall is always followed by smoke from decaying vegetation. The rivers are cutting capers. The Ohio, for instauee, falls two inches Dome days, while the fall on other day* is scarcely perceptible. The Department of Agriculture now estimates the corn crop at 1,453,000,<100 bushels. This is the smallest yield iu any year, except ou», since 1878. In lSSl the crop was 1.194.916,000 bushels, and the effect of the tailing off in yield that year was felt for three or lour years subsequently in the iuci^ased cost of pork which it caused. The average yearly consumption of wheat to every person in the United States for food is four and one-half bushels. At the present average price,. GO cents, the cost per person is 42.70, and the cost of preparing the wheat into flout might make it 13.00 The average consumption of sugar Is 55 pounds to the person. The average cost to the consumer is 7 cents per pound, or 83.85 to the person. The average tax collected lront every man woman, aud child by the government on sugar is fl JO per year.—Ex. Watch Him. SrfBmr finwral. A rascal, who calls himself S. SMcConahoy, has been swindling people iu Jennings con nty by taking orders for underwear for the imaginary firm of John II. Howard & Co., of Cincinnati, and collecting the money for the same in advance. Look out for hint as he will most likely come this way. Got. Oglesby's Decision. The decision of Oglesby in the Anarchist matter is in substauce as follows; The petition of Albert Parsons, Adolph Fischer, George Engel aud Louis Lings, is fora pardon, restoring them to li tarty, based ou their 'innocence, and lit further says that they will not accept mercy or commutation of sentence, and Idonot believe them inuGcent and if they will not accept mercy 1 cannot interfen.', FMdett and Schwab, can be commuted to life imprisonment without doing violence to public justice and l therefore commute their sentences to imprisonment in the penitentiary for life. A* for Spies 1 do not feel justified in Interfering.
They Paid The Penalty Last Friday added another paste to lour mch American historv. Hanging men would not be takou into u account, had they not had ant connection with a party that was, and may still be a growing aiad threatening evil in our government. They attempted to accomplish lhintpurposes by murder, and paid the penalty by surrendering their owu lives to the law, to suicide, and to imprisonment for life. Fielden and Schwab appealed to Governor Oglesby, of Illinois, for executive clemency. Lingg suicided, blowing bis head to pieces with a dynamite bomb; Parsons, Engle, Spies and Fisher refused to ask clemency, and of course did not get it. Whether Gov.Oglesby had a right to interfere with law, considering conditions outside of what the Statute allows, is a question. Part ies that threaten the welfare of good government And are a menace to society, should be delt with according to the atrocity of crime. Such cases become one of no mercy consideration, and “an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a a tooth," should be the law unavoidable in all such cases as that to which we refer in the cases of these Chicago Anarchists. The four that were huug wese cranky, bold, defiant, and Anarchistic to the last. At 11-55 on Friday the death-march was made from the jail do the gallows. Not an indication of fear was manifest. The wickedest men on earth went to their death’s defiant and stubborn—no prayer, no priest, no God—all aloue— dark, defiant, devilish, they launched into—well, into eteruitv, where they aud their God will settle correctly all the wrongs or rights that were tried The ere properly or improperly. >ur men, Parsons excepted, placed icmselves on the trapdoors, the Moots were place over their faces, the •hite caps draw, the signal given, and II that is earthly was forgotten in isgraceful death. Chicago and the •hole country feels relieved, while ;ern hopes are uiantaincd with doubt tat this settles the Anarchistic evils >r all time to come. Hang the crimlinal Anarchist.
