- The aborc it a subject upon which most Is written, but it least understood. To educate Is to matte all of , the mind that it is capable of becorn- | ing. No sooner do we consider the subject in'this light than we know the great task, and the certain responsibility of the teacher. The first thing to be consider**! in the way of educating is the branches to be taught so as to secure the most complete developement of tine mi ml. Of course the developement of the mind depends upon the health of the hodv, the dwelling house of the utiutl. Hygieuc is, therefore, an important [ study; and, for this reason. Its kin- | dred subjects, Anatomy aud Physiology should hgve a place in every well regulated school. After passing this subject it is difficult to tell what is the most apparent as a needed subject, j It is not the object of tbis short arti» i cle to mention ail that is important, but to touch Upou a few of those subjects most needed. For those who attempt more tliau the primary studies of the common schools there should be some consideration of nhe addi- ' tioual studies. As all thought is comI munleated mostly by language it i> iwrliap* Well to maintain that a prop- j
cr study of English literature is tl»e first subject that thvuld demand attention; and If time permits, other literatures than English should demand attention. Next 1o literature, practically and theorcticaliiy, comes mathematics. By a study of .language and mathematics the human intellect develop* - faster than by nnv other two studies which c.'.u be so easily acquired. After leaving these studies there arises some dispute about what is next in importance. We are almost persuade^ that, aftes j passing language aud mat hematics,' that tin; most important of oilier ; studies is music. We do not mean , the ordinary cultivation of the abUi- ] tv to produce on vs* fin. piano or or-1 g«u the ordinary trash published bv wholesale and scattered lik*- other t land. We evils broadcast over tin mean si»< b a study oi the anbject as i- | ncnr'sMirv Jo bring out those intellect- > usi! tncult * ■ that can in i." uher w.tv : be tl«Vii«i>sd. There an* p*»tvcr« •<! Th ■ foreman who was in this office sometime ago, was uferei! fourteen dollars perl week fer blowing a h«ru at a prominent place in one of our eastern stales, j What occupation could furnish more Having business than this, considering the capital invested ? True.not ail tifu expect to profit financially by the study of music. Neither are other ituidies pursued by any inteution of iuaucial profit. Education. in point >f benefits to be derived, is somewhat ike*religion; it contains something j note titan present necessity. It is • irgued with almost indisputable evi-{ lence, that be who is well cultured in j ijelles-lettres can not b« bad. If' this be true, it is easy to comprehend the gootl to be derived from those | studies that animate the soul. But it i diouhl lie rcuicinliered that no one hotild attempt to hew his way to the ‘ ighesi educational honors, alone, if J tiporluuitv decs bio; oficr an edu
nation, it is well to bo selfin ado; but the selfmade would be much better had thev been under the guidance of & master. We by no means think that self culture should J be abandoned. Iu this age of good books and papers, one may educate himself fairly well, yet it is much the better that the student obtain information from those who not only understand, but who base passed over aud have encountered all the difficulties along the road that leads to the point* of man’s highest ambition, where all nis achieved greatness is a burden, because so iueouiplete.
