There will be a meeting to-morrow night at the church in dwell to make arrangements for the Fourth of July celebration contemplated at that place. —■—a——————— ■ Board of Trade. Princeton has a board of trade, which is not more nor less than a society of business men for the purpose of increasing the chances of sclliug whatever you have or baying anything you want. The Democrat will make some father mcnliou of this nest week. It is proving a blessing to Princeton. Would it not be a great tiling’for Petersburg to try ? Not only Petersburg, but the entire county would be benefited thereby. There will be a basket meeting and baptising at the Gray church in Jefferson township, on the first Sunday in June. The regular examination for applicants for license to teach will be held in the public school building in Petersburg on next Saturday. From the necessary increase of tlie Ituililing and Loan Fund stock tv ♦100,000, there must be a number of people who believe that tbo building boom is going to loom up immensely. A heavy rain fell cast of Otwell on last Monday. On this tide of Otwell there was also rain,'while at Otwell it was dry. As no rain fell at Otwell. it is peculiar that it should have rained on both sides of it at the same time.
“Theearly bird catches the worm.'' Likewise, the merchant who fights for trade gets it. Swingyenraelf into the haltuice, gentlemen, and let us bring I“otersburg into the booth coltt inn with a rim and a determination to wiu. Now U the time to prepare something for the fair. Remember that agricultural and mechanical associations should be encouraged for the good they dt* in educating the public in the many mils and occupations necessary to civilised prosperity. The south part of l’ike county is giving more attention to corn and I wheat tliau formerly. A few years ago tobacco was too often the crop in , that part of the county. It will not pay to run land in tobacco, even at a good price, for it will impoverish tUb Soil. f. The Spring meeting of Terre Haute ! Trotting Association is set for June I 7th, 8th, Uth, and 10th. A larger at-' tendance tliau nsualy is expected. Arrangements have been made for the best horses in the world, and the races will be the best e ver had by the association. There has Wen a large number of people baptized this Spring i n different parts of the county. Of all denominations, the baptists seem to take the lead as to number. May they and every other denomination in the country succeed in whatever is for the elevalitigof mankind. With its issue of Ihursday, the Pike County Democrat begins its eighteenth year. If anybody in 1‘ikecouuty can beat Mr. M^on, let hiim scud us the news. J. B. Young & Co. have just purchased a fine line of men’s clothing. We had the pleasure of seeing them on Monday. They are certainly the best cut, and the best fitting, which we have ever seen, and we can heartily reocoruend them as such. One aslonishlug feature of their clothing is the price at which they are sold, being as cheap as the poor article*, thogh their goods are of the best quality. Not enough clover is produced by our farmers. Wo are told by those who have tried it, that it pays to sow clover seed worth eight dollars per bushel, and though not a crop is cut, uor any seed is saved, yet. plowed under as a fertiliser, it will pay a large per ceut. after paying for' the seed and the cost of sow lug. Farmers who have never tried this can easily test it upon a small piece of ground which has Ikku reudered almost unproductive by over tilling. lie was sweating like an epicure at diumer on a Fourth of July.
