More than a year ago. Miss Ixtvey Kelley, a school-teacher of JetlV-rson township, punished a son of Mr. Meyers. The Jasper Courier published a current rumor that the boy died of the whipping. Miss Kelly soon after brought suit against Mr. Clem meat Doane, editor of the Courier. A change of venue was taken to Kvan*ville where a conclusion” was reached on the 24 ult. The damage was assessed at oue hundred dollars. J Menu ho are not qua&atcd to fiB office are the ones u ho fail the «<ftener. Ii is a common saving of travelling men 4ml visitors to Petersburg that our people are social, accomodating awl clever. That, for a tow it of its size, it possesses as much true manIiikmI Mitl womanhood as any town which they evejr visit. We have heard this remark made by strangers who did not know at the time tint they were talking to ait individual who lives in l*etersburg. For this reason we think the many remarks whicli we have heard of this kiud eould not have been made for flattery. If they had been for flatten, they would have heel made in a iimmier I to Ik* taken by persons living here. As this has often not been the case, we are convinced that Petersburg does contain as well bred ladies and gentlemen as may be.found anywhere. It makes us feel good. We are proud' of the fact. ii It Is true, however, and uo one is more willing to admit it than vs are. that our citizens like to kcc/ what they honestly earn, and thul they do not love uhprofiitable invest-uu-uU; but, while title economical idea is in a stage not liable to be molested, there is nothiug which «-ouhl be cal led parsimonious in tbe cliaractcr of any of our citizens. It' any one moves to Petersburg and finds the merchants treat him well, he must not think it is because Ids “custom'’ is wanted. If he does he generally makes a mistake. Of course, a merchant wants all the good custom he can get. Tilts he ought to wapt to do. It is human. H is alt right. Yet, it you wiifstudv him, you will generally find his kiuduess to continue with you whether you ever buy of him or not. If a lady or gentle man lends the members of a church to be’ ; “very kind,*’ *it must not be taken as au invitation to “cSme into my church.” Not at all. We have [church members here who are more accommodating, more magnanimous, wl.olc - sould. golden - hearted than this.' As to our preachers, wc have only three stationed at this place. Wc have yet the first time to hear "aught said against the good character of auy of them. If the pruuing in the “Master’s vineyard" is not done just right, it is no fault of theirs. 4»o far as in them lies the power to do* they accomplish all. - . ' j The above may sound a little fljattcring to, those not well acquainted with the town, but we want to say tjhat it! is not at allo.ver done. Like alljotherj communities, we may haveour citizen j whoocctsionally steps aside in human- j ity, aud cjthibi*.* the fallen trait-. , What to>vu on earth has not? I But let us say that IVtershurg lias as lew i such ones as any town of its size.! This is not so very small a town, j and. considering that our Elder Broth- ; er. our “school-master,” with all his j goodness and his divinity, could not ; get twelve together without a .Indus, j sc niu-ft know that way ward ness can be found by hint whose mind grovels in the base aud the untrue. And hourst friend, however, will find but little hallow ness iu and about Petersburg. If you become one of our citizens you will be convinced that few places on earth are like Petcrsburg.gnd that, with a little prbgivs- | sion. a city may spring up here, We ! look Tor an immense growth of this [ place. We may take occasion [iu the jmcar future to tell you w hy. V
