A prominent citizen of Petersburg told us the other morning that his taxes, during the time the Republican Commissioners had -charge, of county affairs, was o little more than double, o.n the same amount of property, that they were before or have been since, lie has his tax receipts to prove his statement. Commissioner Abbott's idea of economy consists of robbing his political friends of that which is justly due them, and voting subsidies to political opponents, lie argues that Democrats won’t 'kick’ for fear of injuring the party, and the Republicans, to whom he votes the subsidies, will stop criticising bis short codlings, and will pat him ou the back, and say, “he is a man after our own heart.’’ llenrv Kdwards lias a bicycle, and the hoys have great fun iu learning to ride the when). The youngest child survived; the other died. There is a general ibeling of enthusiasm all along the line of tiro proposed Vincennes and Ohio River Railroad, and residents along .the route will be pleased to see work begin immediately, which the directors say will very likely be done. ‘•Ihe banu tournament for the fair is a good idea,"' said one of the directors, the other day. “We have never had-one here, though it lias been talked of; but I am for a tournament this year and propose to work it up,’’continued the director. If this should bis arranged it will be a feature of the fair, something new and novel; and will largely increase the attendance, please the people and add to to the receipts of the latr association, (live us a band tournament. . The annual reunion and miliitary encampment of .the Tri-State Veterans’ and Military, Association of the States of Ohio, Indiana and Michigan, will be held at Fort Wayne, August lb to 23, inclusive. Let all at the average Indiana has increased from IKK) pounds pel- head iu 1816 to 1,000 pounds per head in 1886, an average increase of 100 pounds per head in ten years. This shows that cattle in this- State are being graded up to a hotter beef standard, the remit,' doubtless, of the dissemination i»f Shorthorn, Hereford aud other jfood beef blood. Statistics further show that the average age at which beeves are seht to market in tins Slate is about three years, a gain of ibout four months in ten yeift-s. This [act points in the same direction as die other, via, that Indiana is steadily progressing as a beef producing State.

Two nines, composed principally of the same players that crossed hats on the 4th, named respectively the Athletics and the ‘‘Black-listed,” played a game in the “east end,” Sunday, which resulted in favor of the Athletics by a score of 21 tjo 6. The large score is in the main due to the rough
ground, which prevented pin vers from fielding the ball, and also to wild throwing. With more practice the boys will play a creditable game. The pitching of Will lieuss (Athletics) and Elmer Eagen, (Black-list-ed) were features of Sunday’s game, lieuss striking out fifteen men and Eagen thirteen. Will llisgeu, catcher of Athletics made some good catches. Will is a good one. The base playing was good, but the out-fielders “need more practice.” Ralph Akeragc played a great game at first. Geo. Leslie (back-stop of the Athletics) was stung on the foot by a bee, and executed a song and dance. “Alex. Borer was there!” Ah, there, Alex! A large number of spectators were present Sunday, and will no doubt l>e in attendance next Sunday, when the same nines play again. Of Interest to Ladies. The new treatment for ladies’ diseases discovered by Dr. Mary A. Gregg, the distinguished English Phvsician and nurse, which has revolutionized the entire mode of treating these complaints in England is now being introduced into the U. S., under a fair and novel plan. Sufficient of this remedy for one month's trial treatment is sent free to every lady who is suffering from any disease common to the sex who sends her address and lfi2ct stamp for expense, charges, etc. | i It is a positive curejfor any form of female disease and the free trial package is many times sufficient to effect a permanent cure. POLITICAL PICKUPS. Judge G. V. llowk will bo a cadi* date for re-nomination for supreme judge. The IKnnoerats of the Third Indiana District will settle their difference at North Vernon, July 17. (ioedlet Morgan's card, printed in last week’s News and Press, contains thirty-five pronoun^ ‘"I.” Big "1!” At Boonville to-day the Congressional Convention will nominate the next Congressman from the First District. The regular Democratic Congressional Committee of the Seventh Indiana District has endorsed Bynum as the regular nominee. Bailey must go, or bo considered a bolter. The Republican candidate for clerk publishes a card. This settles it. A man who feels that it is necessary to make apologies thus early in the campaign is certainly in a very bad way. The Democratic ticket is sure to win. ; Thompson, McCarty, Edwards, Shrode, Poetker, Morton, Bowman, Amos and, Overbeck represent every elemeut of strength and popularity. Ilurrah for the ticket! A desperate effort will be made by the Republican managers to hold both their prohibition aud whisky vote in Indiana, this fall. They can not carry “water on both shoulders," or rather whislv on one and water on the other. The Republican Congressional Convention will be held at Evansville the 29th instant. The number of delegates will be—for Gibson 28, Perry 22, Pike 18, Posey 22, Spencer 24, Vanderburg 51, Warrick 21—Total 185. The Princeton Democrat voices the sentiment of the Democracy of the State when it says. “Not a man from the Seventh Congressional District should be nominated on the State ticket this year, and no man sustaining the “bolter" Bailey in the Congressional race in that District, who is now in office, should ever be re-nominated. Down with the bolters." r^KK COVNTY’s HKt.KlJ.VTKS TO ST.VTK ANt> SEXATOKtAJ. CONVENTIONS.
