The Board of Commissioners resumed their work Monday, and have been expediting business as ouly a hard-working, Democratic board can. They will probably adjourn to-day. An athletic club will be formed by onr active young men, and a meeting will bo held to-night to orgauizc. It is a proper move, and yon can now look out for the development of athletes. The docket has many defaults thereon this term, the largest of which now entered, is Ansel Patterson vs. Gus. and Mary Ilisgen for $1,179.85; sale ordered. A large number of Dubois county people came over to court yesterday, to be present in a case brought here on a change of venue. It is an attachment suit (John Bradcnstein et al. vs. S. G. CHOP NOTES. The recent rains damaged the clover in some parts of the county. Lee Minnier has a field of wheat which he tl inks will make 40 bushels to tho aero. Owing to the abundance of rain last week, it is safe to presume that the farmers have about completed setting out their tobacco. One dollar and a half per day was determined on by some farmers as the best they could pay for harvest hands this year. A-large number of hands wete secured at that price. The farmers are now in the midst of a big wheat harvest. The crop is reported to be splendid, but fears arc entertained that the continued rains will damage it some by causing it to mould in the shock. Pitney item in Boonyillc Enquirer: Our farmers who liavo not sold their tobacco are prising the same and shipping by way of the Straight Line railroad to the Evansville markets, realizing from one to three dollars per hundred. One crop, that of Edward Christmas, sold for five -dollars per hundred. Tho good rains last week gave vegetation a good start. It is thought that the hay crop will fall short of an average. Oats have improved very much in the last ten days. Corn is grow ing nicely and wheat was never more promising, but may he damaged somewhat in the shock. Taken all in all this promises to be a profitable crop year to Pike county. Eds. to be town the ei Officers. smocrat :—Good officers are inmended an.d such arc our trustees. The Petersburg and Jasper base ball clubs will cfbss bats at Jasper next Sunday. Our boys arc talking of organizing a base ball club to defeat Washington’s crack club. Will Reuss lias developed ;into a crack base ball pitcher, and has the curves down to a fine point. The Iluntingburg Argus suggests the removal of the county seat from Jasper, becauseof the couuty capital’s lack of a live base ball club. Henry Rickrich, John While and Elias Osborne will contest for the fisherman’s championship belt. It goes to the man telling the biggest fish story. A game of ball was played here Sunday between two Petersburg nines, and was stopped by rain in the fourth inning wheu the score stood one to two.. It was a good game. The canal at Clark's station is a popular resort for timrods. Almost every day you will find a fishing party there. East Friday a party, headed by E. P. oonctuctor w eissmg ©t the i',. & i. is one of the most clever men in the business, and is deservedly popular. The gross earnings of the L., E. & St. L. (Air-Lino) railroad was $49,962 greater during the first five months of this year than for the corresponding five months of last year. The sale of the Air Line to the principal bondholders puts that property in the hands of a company who have the ability to fit it up in first class order, and it is said they will proceed to do so. W. W. Peabody, President of the O. & M., has given the people of Washington, until July 1st to decide whether they will accept the railroads offer in regard to moving the shops to that place. If they agree, the shops now located at Cochrane, Seymour and Vincennes, will go to Washington. Mr. Peabody states in his ultimatum that company will not wait longer than the time named. the v. & o. A tax of $8,741 was voted in Jefferson township, this county, in aid of the proposed Vincennes aud Ohio River Railroad, on Monday, April 23, 1883, and a demand for a levy of the tax will be made at an early day. The Knox County Commissioners last week levied a tax of $90,000 and some odd dollars in Vincennes township, and $18,000 in Ilarrisomtown. ship in aid of the above road. The Vincennes News says it is probable that work will begin on the road as early as next month.
Two Years in the Pen. Thomas Blair, alias 'Williams, who stole a medicine case from Dr. Dukate, of Wheatland, was last week sentenced to two years in the penitentiary by the Knox Circuit Court. The Vincennes Commercial says: •‘Blair is about fifty-four years of age and came hero form Louisville, "ivy lie was formerly a surgeon in the British Army, and while serving in that capacity fell into habit of eating opium, llis uncontrolablc appetite for the drug led him to commit the theft. After receiving sentence he told Deputy Sheriff Shiveley that he would have taken a one years term without a murmur as he wanted to break himself of the accursed opium habit, which had been his ruin.” Blair, or Williams as he was known here, was arrested at this place, April 39, and taken to Knox county. He was a painter, and worked at his trade here a few weeks before his arrest. The “Bolt” of Yineennes Pnpils. The. graduates of the Vinccuncs high school picked up their books, essavs, orations, etc. recently and left school when they discovered that a colored girl was to be permitted to participate in the graduating exercises. Miss Brewer, the colored pupil graduated alone last Friday before a large audicuee, and was the recipient of much attention. But regarding the “bolt” of the pupils, the Viucennes News says: “There seems to be an issue of fact between Prof. Taylor and the High school graduates. Prof. Taylor eUirns that the ‘strike’ was occasioned by the presence of Miss Grace Brewer, colored, in the graduating class, Jbut the ‘strikers’ themselves insist that they were outraged by the distribution of the honors, which went to a lady who had not taken tho Bill course under the rules.” For Sale.
