The Pike t’oiiaty Democrat has tlie lar (test cirealatiou of any newspaper published lr Pike County! Advertisers will make a note oi this fart! Thursday, Aug. 27,1885. Grant once said that “The bcV tvay to get rid of a bad law was to;enforce it.” . ■ When Socrates said that all, met wore liars, he certainly lived in a more untruthful age than this. Liart are the exception now. The Philadelphia Medical News labors through a long editorial tc tfliow that punning is not, as a rule, tc be taken as an indication of insanity, We are glad to note that our Consul at Constantinople has made a Vigorous protest against the expulsion ol Americans from Jepsaleni simply because they are Jews. Many persons think the Great Democratic Mill grinds slow, but the rings are .dropping one by one. The cattle men, who were fostered by the Republican party, have to go. We have no use for a Democrat, lor a Republican either, who isn't a partisan and,‘in that sensil offensive to somebody. Drones and dead heads arc ol no account in/or out of politics. ! 4.; No ek-president of the United States who was ever elected to the office is now living. Ilayes stole iii under Tilde if s fence and Arthur! was shot in by the bullet of a crazy assassin. -: Minister Dknby is on his wfiy to China and Minister Hanna journeys to Buenas Ayers. These two Indianans will make fit representatives at the foreign courts, and will do honor tc their State and the United States. | Tub Evansville Journal says Congressman Kleiner’s work of getting Democrats appointed Postmasters, is foolishness. It. may seem so to the Republicans who have so long [held office, but to Democrats it is a genuine pleasure to"receive the emoluments ol victory. ! Everything is being done by the managers of the Pike.eouuty fair to excel anything that has been done in the past, fanners should take an active part in building up the agriculjtuYal interests of our county, and in Mo-way can it bo done so successful as by bringing together the best of then farm products, and exchanging their Inodes of prod icing.the same.
Hoadey was ro-nominated by aclamation. jThe indications are that he will be. chosen' Ohio’s Governor on the 13th of October by a decided majority. jForaker is running a milk ami eider campaign in prohibition counties ar.d a whisky campaign in localities where residents take their daily drams. Hoadley is decidedly 'against prohibition, and for license, lie Ms made a good Governor, too. The Indiana postolliees which will have the benefits of the special delivery system, which goes into effect on t If? 1st of next October, are Aurora, Columbus, Cratyfordsviile, Elkhart, Evansville, Fort Wayne, Goshen, Indianapolis, Jeffersonville, Kokomo, Lafayette, Laporte, Lawreneelntrg. Logansj-ort, Madison, Michigan City, New Albany, Peru, Richmond, Seymour, South Bend, Terre Haute, Valparaiso, Vincennes and Washington. Howeyek brief may be his term of service, an English Lord Chancellor ’ on retiring from office, is entitled to a pension of $25,000 per annum thereafter. Mr. Xaish, who went out with Gladstone, had held his seat for only thirty days, find Mr. Gibson, his sue-bes.-or, will hardly outlast one hundred days, hut the British taxpayer , must give them £5,000 a year while they live. It is not surprising that some people deem^-a, monarchy the most perfect of human institutions.
i Amonu the most commendable law s enacted by the Indiana Legislature at its late session, is the following re- ' striding the sale of toy pistols: “It shall be unlawful for any firm, company or persons within the State of Indiana.to manufacture, sell or expose for sale, or give as a prize or reward, any toy pistol or other device for the purpose of exploding caps of wafers containing fulminate, or explosive compounds, and any person so selling or offering to sell or give away feneh toy pistols shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction thereof shall be fined in any sum not less than ten dollars, or be Imprisoned in the county jail not less than ten and not more than twenty days.” . * ' _ The great city of Evansville is under many obligations to the little village Shawneetown for the loan of her • Congressman. We shall no; doubt want his assistance again and we hope that it will be as cheerfully l iven !in the future as it has been in the past, aqd^if Shawneetown should have the misfortune to be without a representative in Congress and Evansville should he so fuckv as to have one we will gladly return all favors extended to us. We hope tintEvansville will be represented in Congress in 1887, but wo also hope that onr good neighlwr Shawneetown will never ex pericnee our present misfortune in paving for representation which we do not get.—Evansville Tribune Jiews.
The Louisville Courier-Journal, in its review of the wheat market, says: ‘■The exports of wheat in the last eight years have averaged about 139,000.000 bushels, and the present consumption in the United States is about 320,000,000 bushels, a total of 459,000,000; so that, if exportation diminishes by 39,000.000and home consumption by 20,000,000, there will be a demand for 400,000,000 bushels, out of a crop of 357,000,000 bushels, plus the unknown quantity of the old crop surplus. However the outlook may be regarded by those of a,speculative temper, it will be financially salubrious for that class of people to remember that the present situation creates immense, opportunities for manipulation ag-ainst the public, and for the immediate present, the position is remarkably hazardous for speculators on either side of the account. “Brick” Posieuoy is now editing a paper in ‘Washington City "called the United States Democrat. “Brick” is strongly anti-civil service reform. Among other things he says: “We do not see how it was ever possible for Democrats in the days of Jefferson and Jackson to have got along without the Civil Service law. “After Cleveland lias completed his Civil Service funeral l*yre in the Democratic camp, it is to he hoped that he will know how to ornament it before he applies the match. “Let President Cleveland toss the names 6f those who play roots on him in t he matter of recommending horse thieves, bilks, dead beats, Mugwumps and other trash to him tor appointment, and we will help make life a demuition disaster for them. Toss us all such balls, Mr. President, and we will send them up in the air.” It is said a tariff reduction of $40,000,000 lias been agreed upon in Democratic Circles for consummation by the next Congress. If it is secured by the wise distribution which will put raw material on the? free list and reduce the fines now levied by the tarn! for the sole benefit of private individuals it will be a great step in the right direction. (JENLUAL AM) PEKSOSAL. Kentucky's'Democratic majority is Arthur and Hayes do not speak as they pass by. Mug-wnntps are few and far between in Indiana. Stanley Huntley, author of the “Spoopendyke papers,” is dead. Ex-Governor Porter was Chairman of the Democratic State Central Com mittee in 1851. Sidney Dillon, the New Yorlcer, says that no man ever gave him a dollar. He worked for every cent of his fortune. Poor John McCullough, the actor, is gradually losing his, mental and physical strength. Ilis days s&m numbered. The post of lice established bv the name of Vilas, after the Postmaster General, is in Owen county, this State. “Our children cry for bread” was tire motto displayed at the Chicago Socialist picnic, at which.three hundred kegs of beer were consumed. Warden Jack Howard has recommended the removal of the southern prison trout Jeffersonville. Washington will make an effort to have it located there, if the change is to he made. “Let me see,” said a minister who was tilling out a marriage certificate, and had forgotten the date, “tins is the fifth is it not ?”“Xo, Sir,” said the bride with some indignation, “this is only my second.”
AOTEHAKD OPINIONS, The Chicago Tribune speaks of (he mug-wumps as “sired by George William Curtis and damped ‘ by the Democracy.’' It has been many a day since Indiana, had a Governor who gave his constituents an administration as generally satisfactory as thatof Governor I. 1\ Gray;—Madison Herald. People who wonder why Chicago has not been utterly destroyed by tire, as happened in the ease of Sodom and ■her sister eitv, must remember that although Chicago is as wicked as they were, she has a much better lire department.—Poston Dost. It is rather amusing to find the Mahone papers in Virginia abusing- Fitzhugh Lee for joining in the Grant funeral ceremonies. "They ought to have a little more, et nsideratxou for the allies at. the North, who will find that a hot poker to handle this year.— Philadelphia Kecord. We trust that the report that Hon. Joseph K. McDonald will be given a supreme judgeship is true. No purer and brighter man than Senator McDonald lives. He is a credit to his State, his party, and his country. Chief Justice McDonald won id sound very uiefly.—Michigan City Dispatch. Hubert Coliyer tells us of one of the best and wisest things General Grant ever said. ‘‘Men are more scarce than heroes,.’’ remarked the soldier, with the brevity which is begotten of wit. The here is apt to be a linear—he goes further in one direction than am of his fellows: hut the man who, according to Grant, is scarcer than heroes,, is one who is great all round the circumference of duty and achievement. Heroism is sometimes horn of a single noble impulse; true manhood is the calm result of strong convictions. Grant was right.—New York Herald.
MONEY MATTE KS. ’Tis not a joke To be dead broke. IMfe’s joy is snapped If you are strapped. Fun is barred up Wheu you are hard up. There is no delight When coin is tight. But you can win If you have tin. And get much trust If you've the dust . And out up tricks With spondutix. And gnylv rush When you are flush. —Chicago Sun. Coining to Indiana. President Cleveland hasbeeu invited to attend the .State Fair in September, and has answered that he thinks of accepting the invitation. He made inquiries as to trains arriving tnd departing, and said that tie had never been west and would like to tome, both to meet the people of Indiana and visit: the city, which was the home of his associated the Vice President.— Indianapolis Times.
'How To Build Up a Town. Just how to build up a town is not generally known, or at loasst is not generally practiced. The following suggestions are to the point aud well worth consideration : Talk about it. Write about it. Help to improve it. Speak well about it. Beautify the streets. Patronize its merchants. Advertise in its newspapers. Elect good men to all the offices. Speak well of its public-spirited, enterprising citizens. If you are rich invest in something ; employ somebody ; be a “hustler.” If you don’t think of any good word to say, don’t say anything bad about it. Remember that every dollar you inyest in a permanent improvement is that much on interest. Be courteous to strangers that come among you, so that they go away with good impressions. Always cheer on the men who go in for improvements; your portions of the cost will be nothing onl^r what is just. Don’t kick at any propositi necessary improvement because it is not at your own door, or for fear that your taxes will be raised fifteen cents.' Don’t throw stumbling Works in the way of your town officers ; they are generally public spirited! men and spend lots of time in the public interest for which they receive no remuneration. Don’t use rubber stamps on your letter heads: that is a “dead give away” on your own business, on tiie town and on.the newspapers published in it. Get vour letter heads, envelopes, business cards, &cL printed at the printing offices. Never condemn the local paper unless it has unfairly used you. If it has dealt with you unjustly, write to it or go into the office and tell the editor about your case; if he was wrong he will lose no time in telling it to the public. v If you owe the newspaper a dollar or five dollars, or twenty-five cents, pity it if you can; there is no other force in the community which can do anything like the same amount of good for it as the newspaper. It deserves prompt and fair remuneration. Don’t let politics get mixed up with your business; if you are a business man, don’t losetbdhelp tbit a newspaper can givtOPou because its politics arc not your politics and by all means don't advertise nib rely to’ “help the printer aloug^gjplvertise to help your business and town along.—Osborn Local. - 1'J-■_ The Evansville division oft! is internal revenue district has been changed by collector Hanlon, anil the following counties now compose the third division : Posey, Gibson, Knox, Daviess, Martin, Pike. Vahderburg, Warrick, Spencer and Dubois. J. D. Armstrong, of Rockport, has accepted the position of traveling deputy collector for the district, and entered upon his duties. Waiter Meredith and Daniel Fagans became engaged in g row at Washington Saturday night when Meredith shot Fagans in the left breast, within one inch of the heart, and then escaped. Fagans is only nineteen years ol<l. Meredith is the son "of Bnrrill Meredith, oife of the ^wealthiest and most prominent citizens of Washington. — 1 If farmers consult their own interest, they will sow more largely of wheat this fail, than usual. Your KIDNEYS They Need Your Immediate Attention. HERE’S A CASE. For six long, dreary years I have been a great sufferer from a complaint of my kidneys which failed to be cured by physieians or ad vertised remedies. I began to feel I could never secure relief, us I had spent two hundred uud fifty dollars without success. This disease was so excruciat ing that it often prevented me.from performing my daily duty I was advised to try ttje efficacy of li. B. Its action on the kidneys is simply wonderful, and any one who needs a real, speedy and harmless kidney medicine should not hesitate to give B. B. It. a trial. One bottle will convince any one. C. H.
