He is authorized by me to contract for advertising, job work, etc., and to receive and receipt for all monies due the office. Y. I*. Knight. Jan. 8,1885.
It is Governor:Gray now. ? The monopolists and monopolies must go._ The Ohio Legislature is “all broken up’ over the whisky question. Scuttle*: Colfax died suddenly at Mankato, Minn., Tuesday morning. How slowly truth travels, while slander goes on “the wings of the wind.” - The editor of the News soeins to have discovered a “mare’s nest” in the sheriff"s sale matter. Dr. Bcrcuard and Ben Butler are no longer subjects of newspaper comment. Now, exit, St. John. Rockport was visited bv a $30,000 fire Tuesday morning. The Indiana Pocket newspaper was destroyed. We are informed that the State Association of Teachers has asked the Legislature to pass a law of corapul.sory education. The Detroit Free Pres* gives out «iis bit of wisdom: “When the ■average American won’t kiek there is •something about him that ought to fce Investigated/]_ Thebe are six&Smiths in the Legislature; three in the .Senate ami three in the House. It is a very cold <fia^ when tlie members of the Smith family fail to get in their work.
•Bhnwrtsrin office” is tbfe thing. Rotate the w ire-pullers out and rotate good Democrats in. E*>Gaxuuu>H Porter’s message expressed the opinion that the Kankakee marsh should be reclaimed at the expense fiSthe State. There will be an immigration of editors to Michigan after this hint. In that State one can buy prime stove wood at 75 cents a cord,. No more able or deserving man lives in. the United States than Joseph K. McDonald. He is the equal in all respect^ of any man who was ever called into the cabinet of a President. “The South only wants peace, good Government and a thorough unification of the whole country,” says Senator Wade Hampton. We arc fast approaching the days made glorious by the Democratic doctrine of “peace on earth and good will to men.” The Evansvill Courier pertinently remarks that the impressiou is general that the business depression of the past year has reached low-water mark, and that the change of tide is at hand. Mr. Cleveland will take his seat accompanied by a flood of returning prosperity. _
Du ki no the past year 1310 persona hare been naturalized in Indiana. Of these seven were from Austria, 14 from" British America and Canada, 26 from Denmark, 135 from England and Wales, 29 from France, 654 from Germany, 38 from Holland and Belgium, 97 from Ireland, 11 from Italy, 26 from Russia, 113 from Sweden aud Norway, 36 from Switzerland and 18 from all otlier countries. A resolution has been introduced in the State Senate favoring the placing of Gen. Grant on the retired list. No action has been taken ou the resolution yet, but it is understood that when the matter is again called up the Democrats will offer the following amendment to the resolution': “And be it resolved ftirthcr that it is the sense of this body that Fitz John Porter should also be placed upon the retired list.” A bill of considerable interest to physicians feas been introduced in the State Legislature: It provides that qualifications of a physician shall be (1) a diploma from a reputable medical college; (2) a llecnsc from the centers of a lawfully organized medical society; (3) a successful and reputable practiceof medicine for ten years within the State; (4) the registry of every physician of his name with the Ch-rk of the county iu which he resides. R. M. Crauam, cartor crf the BoouTille Standard, was throw u from a horac a few days ago and received serious injury in the side., W. Scour Ray, of the Shelby villa Democrat, was clectod President of the Democratic Editorial Association last Tiiursday. i'his is an excellent selection.__ “Stbosg beverages in the Senate end of the Capitol am less used now than for many years, ami in the House end it is the same,” we arc informed by a telegram from Washington City. We suppose Congress adopted lemonade as a beverage. You may call it “lemonade,” if you want to. At auy rate, the tendency of Congress is to reform in all things. The dark clouds which have hung so threateningly over tlic industries of the country, and were a menace to ail classes of business, are gradually beginning to clear away. Wheat has takcu an upward jump, and good results will follow. The gloom will soon be dispelled, and we trust that we may soon be amidst the sunshine and brightness of a prosperous existence.
A return to the old-time simplicity of Washington, says the New Orleans Picayune, would bring back .silver buckles, silk breeches, ruffled bosomed |shirU, powered wigs, cocked hats, aud other ridiculous trumpery, fiuerv and nor.sense aped from the courts of |tlieold world. The gentleman who wants a Jeffersonian inauguration i should think of the fuss aud feathers from which ft progressive nation has escaped. _ The New York Times, oue of the very ablest, as it certainly is one of the very fairest of the leading Republican journals of the country, says: A government official who has been only an official, attending to his business with a proper sense of his public obligations, is at least as likely tp be secure under the administration of President Cleveland as he would have been uuder the administration of President Blaine. But the man who has been a partisan first and an official after- , wants, using the influence of his position for party ends and devoting to party the time far which be was paid by the publicsuch a man's dismissal is demanded by every prineipleof sound civil service reform. Various theories have been advanced by which the people might do away with the credit system, but none are practical. The commercial world moves on its axis to an attempted settlement of accouuts with the closing of the year. The successful business man balances his accounts as near as possible at least every twelfth month. Wheu^ there are drouths or au overproduction of crops—the reverse— this <an not be done. SM, .b A Terr'Neat Oae. [Petersburg News.] The New Year’s Address issued from the Lkmockat is ii very nest one. __ He had an auburn mured girl, and promised to take her out riding. She met him at the door w hen he drove up, and ho cxclatned,-Hello! ready ?”She misuuderstood him, and they don't speak now.—[Norristown Herald. Levi Lockhart, of Pikeville, has been disbarred from practice a.y^an attorney before the interior department, is the way an item reads that is going the rounds of the press. Mr. Lockhart satisfactorily explains his actions to his friends. From the Vincennes Bun we learn tliat Mr.’Hollingsworth, of North Vincennes, slaughtered three pigs, this week, which averaged -340 pouuds each, having gained 2t0 pounds each during the past 240 days—an increase of a pound a day. This is hard to beat. A spring raw circuit is to be conducted by a syndicate of gentlemen front Vincennes, Evansville, Washington and Petersburg resjtectively, is the information we glean from an Old Poet exchange. The track here is a good one, and if the circuit plan is successful, the lovers of the sport will have a chance to sec some exciting contests at our grounds.
T he telephone business in Washington is not a paying investment to the owner, Mr. L. Johnson, of Vinceuues. Tiie Daviess County Democrat says: ‘‘The exchange here (Washington) will be removed autl alt the paraphernalia of the business except that which is neeessary for an office to transmit and aeceive messages from Vincennes and Petersburg.” Tiie telephone is a great advantage to Petersburg. Wo have two offices here, both having a fairly paying patronage. The line referred to above has an office iu the Ilisgeu building, and the other is owned by some Evansville parties and couuects Petersburg wi(h Priucetou aud other tow us aud cities south. The office is at Joe Col vin's store. Close Guessing. During the campaign a Cincinnati cigar dealer offered prizes for the customer making the nearest guess to the number of votes the successful Candida te tor President would receive The number of guesses ran up into the thousauds, aud varied iu figures hundreds of thousands, but the approach to exact accuracy in some cases was remarkable. Cieveliand's exact vote, which is reported by different Secretaries of Stale at 4,872,179, was of course named by no one, but Mr. A. R. Payne came within one of it, his number being 4,872,108. One gucsser missed it by three, another by nine, aud three by twelve.. There were 150 guesses that came within 100 of being correct, and thirty-four were only gpiy-uine off. “WHATEVEB IS BEST—IS BEST.” BY KLU WUIIUK WILCOX. I know, as my life grows older, And mine eyes have clearer sight,— That undereach rank Wrong, somewhere There lies the root of Right. That each sorrow has its purpose— By the sorrowing oft unguessed. But; assure as the Sun brings morning, Whatever is, is best. I know that each sinful action, A|s sure as the night brings shade, Is sometime, somewhere, punished, Tho’ the hour be long delayed. I know that the soul is aided Sometimes by the heart’s unrest. And to grow, means often to suffer,— But whatever is, is best. I know there arc no errors. In the great Eternal plan, And all things work together For the final good of man. An4 I know when my Soul speeds onward In the graud Eternal quest, I shall say, as I look back earthward, Whatever is, is best.
