The Republicans of Gibson and Pike connties have nominated Dr. C. J. A geo for joint representative.—[Rockport Pocket. We were not aware that the Repub-licans-of Gibson were going to joiu in and assist tlieirfriends in this county iu trviug to elect the Dr. to the legislature. But then it makes no difference, the Democrats of Pike and Dubois arc amply able to swallow them all, and elect Mr. Hargrave, and still have votes to spare. 1
The Emmet Hotel, corner of Washington and New Jersey streets, one square cast of the court house, at Indianapolis, is one of the best as well as the cheapest hotels in that city. It tends largely toward encouraging and keeping up a proper spirit of enterprise among the farmers, stockmen and manufacturers, and gives us all a sample of the products of the entire county. J. F. The Democrats were so hard pressed in this county for ajnan w ho was willing to be sacrificed for Sneriff that they had to take two candidates from the same township for the two principal offices.—[Fiessi. What does the Press man mean by the above? lie, doubtless, means to try to prejudice the people of Petersburg against the people of Lockhart township and south of Fatoka generilly. Such statements might cause bad feelings between thei two localities. The editor of the Press, howsver, resides in Petersburg, and desires to prejudice the people north of Patoka against Mr. Shrode, who is a candidate for sheriff, the office the iditor of the Press is particularly interested in. This is clearly shown by iris, not naming the other office. The sdiior has an ax to grind in this matter of sheriff, and the other candidates >n the Republican ticket must not forget this. A Republican Friend of Shrode’s.
Cleveland Bat In his law office when the war broke out and refused to stir until an Jfflocr came and said: “Mr. Cleveland you ‘re wanted in the army, and as you have not leeded the eall for volunteers, wo will have o draft you.” Cleveland hustled! around and 'ound a substitute and went bach to his law >fflce and that is all be did In the war of the Rebellion. Do the people want such' a man ’or President?—[Press. _ Well, if they don’t they can’t consistently vote for Blaine, ha was also Irafted, and hired a substitute for the var, and the only difference between •he two is, that Cleveland’s snbstiute actually went to the front, while Blaine’s substitute went to jail, liavng been subsequently caught in a ■riminnl transaction. More than that, Blaine was reimbursed by the city of \ngusta for the money he paid for lis substitute, the records of that city rearing an entry authorizing the city rrcasurer to pay James G. Blaine the sum of two hundred dollars, which its substitute had cost .and which he tcceptcd. In this matter, as in all >thcrs that havo been made ptiblie, llcvclaud is still ahead,
Perguant to notice and notwithstanding that Saturday was a very busy day with farmers, the Democracy of Pike, to the number of near two thousaud, met at Winslow and gave testimouytof their unqualified approval of the County, State and National Democratic plat forms and tickets, and their faith in the final triumph of Democratic principles. At one o’clock John II. MeConncl was chosen chairmen of the meeting and Win. P. Knight, secretary. The Hon. John J. Kleiner, our present and next representative in Congress, was introduced and addressed the audience for an hontr or more. He reviewed the conduct of the Republican party toward the soldiers and showed that although the treasury is groaning beneath the weight of an immense surplus, wrong from the people by an unjust protective tariff, it is next to impossible for the soldier, his widow or orphans, who now make application to obtain any pension. That the only bill ever passed by congress—and by a Democratic congress at tliat—equalizing pensions and bounties, w as vetoed by a Republican president. That millions of acres of pnblic lands have been squandered by Republicans upon wealthy corporations instead of being reserved for the soldier and actual settler. That bills passed by the Democrats in the house restoring to the soldier and settler millions of acres forfeited by these corporations were defeated by Republicans in the Senate. The frequent and hearty applause given to Mr. Kleiner demonstrated that he and his audience were in sympathy with each other and will vote alike. * At the close of Mr. Kleiner’s speech, Hon. Eugene A. Ely took the stand and in his usual eloquent, argumentative and convincing manner addressed the people at considerable length, quite, eclipsing all his former eflorts as an effective campaign speaker. That no man possesses the confidence and rospoct of the Democracy of Pike county to a greater degree than Mr. Ely was evinced by the attention he received and the universal sympathy accorded him in bis views. Mr. Ely is devoted heart and soul to the success Of the grand old Democratic party and his voice will often be heard in the din of the coming political straggle, giving encouragement and advice to the masses of Democracy. Hon. Lemuel R. Hargrave, the Democratic candidate for joint representative for Dubois and Pike, was present and made a neat little speech. He ably discussed the tariff question and showed that a tariff or tax for protection is robbery . That it is . a scheme of the Republican party for making the rich richer and the poor poorer. That our prosperity as a people is not due to protection but in spite ofit. Mr. Hargrave’s speech was well received and wc will say right here that the people cf Dubois and Pike will bo honored and profited by many speeches from Mm before the ides of November, and the legislature of our State by liis wise counsel afterwards. The people are not ashamed of Kleiner nor Hargrave, but arc proud of belli, Our in terests are safe
in. uicir nan«s. The following resolution was introduced and unanimously adopted: Resolved, that the Democracy of Pike county hearMly indorse tho County, State and National Democratic platforms and tickets, and pledge to them our cheerful und undivided support. Peace, good order, harmony, good I cheer, good speaking and the'highest degree of satisfaction were the dis-! lingnieliihg features of the occasiou. The Democracy of this county were never in letter spirits, never more determined to win, and never had better prospects of success before them than row. The Winslow brass band filled the intervals during tho day with good music, for which they have the grateful thanks of all present. That band is a great addition to the town of Winslow, and by rcasou of their skill and kindness the people are great gaiuers. Although it rained all evening here at Petersburg, not a drop fell a £ Winslow until five o’clock, after the meeting had dispersed, a good omeikfor the success of the Democratic ticket. What an Independent Republican Thinks of County Matters. We clip tho following items from the last issue of the News: The gentleman r .‘-nominated for county commissioner hy the Republicans of this county will' be beaten by 200 votes, unless the Republican farmers of this county are a set of Hal’s. Why is it the Ropublicans of Pike county, while iu convention a few days ago, failed to again pledge to the people to lot out the county printiug to the lowest bidder. Are they ashamed oT their past record in that ircs ect? „ We do not know wether Jeff. W. Richardson will be able to explain away the fulkamount of his shortage a6 reported agaiust him by the experts or not, but we do know that he will be able to explain to the amount of several thousand dollars. Don’t forget that. The Press says that every Republican candidate on the county ticket will be elected. We are authorized by. six gentlemen of Petersburg and vicinity to say that they will wager $100 each that such will .not be the case. Here is a chance for some one to “back up” what they pretend to believe.
Fall Yftlue for the Mosey. No other exhibition that travels iu America gives so much satisfaction to its patrons or leaves such an excellent reputation behind it as the Burr Bobbins’ new consolidated railroad slio%vs which exhibit here Monday Aug. 4. In every department jt is complete, its enterprising proprietor securing the best of everything that money" will obtain, lie advertises just what he has to show, and shows what he advertises. Always keeping faith with the people, denting honestly and equally with, the public, he Ifas acquired a reputation which few show proprietors enjoy. He lias a good show, the people know it, and patronize hsm when he comes. The following from the Detroit EveniugNcws proves that the show still maintains its excellence: The street parade of the Burr Bobbin s’ circus on Saturday, thongh quite up to the average, was but &.faint indication of the excellent show under the canvas. The menagerie contained a fine collection of animals, including the hippopotamus, cow-faced antelope, etc. The giant horse was, perhaps, the most remarkable animal that has ever visited the oity. The ring performance was one of the beet given in years. The tumblers, trap-, sze performers, clowns ajnd trained horses wens uuusuaHy clever. The tents were filled afternoon and evening by eager crowds of people, and everybody got Ins money’s worth.
