Pikkvillk, Ird., Oct. 5,188S (at niglit). Editor Democrat: Oiir little town has two whiskey shops, and this evening whiskey took possession of some good citizens, and a man by the name ot John Lacy, late from the State ot Missouri, was shot by Kti. Cunningham, the ball taking effect in hts thigh and was afterwards extracted by Dr. A. J Rhoafls. An hour or so later JAmes W. Posey, a quiet and good citizen, who caught the arm of Cunningham as he fired at Lacy, and no doubt by so doing saved Lacy’s life, got a little to ranch free whisky, SffdJaeob Luttrult, another good citizen, having much of the "overjoy - tul” got to think that each of them was trying to kill the other, when said Posey came very near shooting Lnttrull—which is another glorious effect of free whiskey in our county. saa»M.ian • --***•*«" - , Prohibition, 6 Pikevillk, Ind., Oct* 6,188% Editor Democrat : ‘ J)ear Sir—As there is no politic! ! excitement lii bur county anil State, think it would be a very good time t , think and talk about the great evil am horrid curse of our land, to-Wifc tk evil of 1 nteuiyerance. I am now in iny slxty-secdnd yea and I never have found a man of sail mind that would say he was in favo of drunkenness; but all say they an Opposed tb intemperance and all tie tong train of poverty, disgrace, niiseri and crime that it inevitably produces Yet the mighty clement that produce: intemperance is to-day the ruliiu l»wer in almost every State in oui ought to be happy government. Now that is a broad assertion. No one denies but that a large majority of tin voters of Indiana was in favor of th< prohibitory amendment to onrCoitstilotion and elected a clear majority to the Legislature pledged to submit said amendment to a vote of the people. Was it done? No. Why? Because the whiskey power bought three Senators and they defeated the expressed will of the people. So the whiskey power is ruling the destinies of Indiana tti-day. Well, that is one witness ! and I will give oite more, tor “by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word shall be established.” The next witness is Iowa. In that State the people elected such large majorities in the Legislature that the whiskey power could not buy enough, members in either house to defeat the prohibitory amendment. But they had another chance, and that was the Supreme Court, which • consisted of but few members. So the Whisky power bought a majority of them and they decided the amendments, which the great mass of the people in that State had made to their Constitution by an
v'.Tciniroiiuiii^ iiiajuniv,- u lU*Oll.8 Cl 111tional, tints defeating the.will of the great an good men of that State. But they did not yield to the whiskey pettier its the pedplc of Indiana are apparently doing. But, I would say, the masses are not converted to drunkenness, but will, in due time, punish such traitors and vindicate their rights. Now let us reason together. Some of our best Citizens say, “I want to be a free man." Now, my friend, when you go to pay your taxes and the treasurer .turns to your name and tells you that it is $30 or $40, and you want to know why it is so high, and 'fie tells you that so much is for school-purpos-es, so much for township purposes,&c., hut that moi'c than oite-half was to pay pauper, court and prison expenses; forced upon you to pay for the use of free whiskey., ypu would say, “I dou’t like that kind of freedom.” " Again, some of our ablest speakers, who know hotter, will go around5over the country and eveu to other States, making great speeches against prohibition; Saving, ‘‘I’m a temperate man and in favor of temperance but we can’t enforce prohibition.” One of the weakest things I ever read from a smart, man was, that if we did prohibit it men fftrtil selling, our amendment would not prohibit them from going to other States and even to Europe and buying the finest of spirits and bringing them here and giving them away. Shame oii sueh an argument! Docs he sup]lose our terocery keepers would give «way barrels of whiskey, which coat them hundreds of dollars, just for the fun of seeing meu get drunk and kill and murder each other ? No, sir. Take the money out of the business of Jmakiug moil drunkards, their families paupel's, andthemselves criminals, and in three days you could not find a saloon in Indiana. Now, is it not strange to think that men will ernraiy lliey ravin J'u-wrr-ef-fcwipw-ance and at the same time advocate a license law. License men to make drunkards, paupers and criminals of your children—my children and your neighbor’s children, which is the inevitable result. Did you ever know a child to be llorn a drunkard ? No, sir. Look around you. Pick out the worst drunkard y<iu know of and if you did not know him when a boy, ask some older person who did, and they will tell you he ! was a sober boy, had a good father and a pious mother, and was,a highly esteemed young man. BfttfalasT There was a man nearby who was licensed, to make young men drunkards and fie could not-rCsist the temptation, And nowsyou see what lie is.- And ret voft want your hoys to he caught in the same snare. Now, if yon want temperance to prevail, help us to remove all these snares and dens froth (Its our worthy Governor, Joseph! A. Wright, said in his speech at Petersburg thirty odd years ago) not only o'tif State but from our land and Nation. The mostjeommon objection to prohibition is that it cannot be enforced^ That some men will have liquor, and some men will sell it. No‘vv, if that argument will justify men in opposing prohibition, the same theory would justify us all in opposing every criminal law oh our Statutes, for ever since the world began, or ever since Moses received the law from God himself on Mertint Sinai, we have had a law with a fixed pe laity that says “thou slialt not kill, yet men have continued to kill ever since; so, you see, under the same argn nent, we ought not to have a law against murder-^Tlius you see the inconsistency of that theory. If it is wrong j to murder, it is wrong to license an)-man to make men murder. So, let us all prove our faith by our works. Lei us unite as one man agahnt this mighty evil and drive it from our country, j Levi Lockhabt. tots and Land Por Sale. Twelve lots at private sale.
