Ohio will do to plaee.at tho top of the Democratic pyramid. The whole country is Serving notice on the grtyid old party that it upisi go. The great Democratie victoiy in Ohio means that, the Republican party must go. Attkr bcingover twentj^yc°rs n solid Republican State, Ohio can safely be couuted Democratic. The world will come to an end onjtbc 8tl» of November, according to the Mohamedan prophets, • Democratic candidates in Ohio to succeed John Slier nan in the 1 nited "Senate are now inoyder. ■9BBSBR "Sunset" Cox says New York was good for 50,000 anyhow, and tl se result hf Ohio will run it well ap to ‘ 100,000. Tub Ohio'republicans may not be quite as happy, but they know a great deal inore than they did before tho . election. • . r “The Republicans must go’ does not apply to President Arthur a nd^iis cabinet. They are. “gone” nearly .all the time. • $ Cincinnati is actively arranging for her in?Xt great musical festival, which, it is intended, shall surpass all former efforts in the same line. Even Iowa, who used to roll up her 80,000 Republican majority, nay be Democratic by thotimeof the next election. It is getting fashionable. Competent civil service,' divorced from |kolideal influence and fro from Federal assessments and dishonest partisan appointments, is the necessity of our Government. From .an oratorical point of view, tiie relative ability of Governor Jlload*y and Jaaftge Porafcer may be gaaged by <ftc fact tliat Foreker made one liundred and Arc speecliea and loadly ten. C3o«iO«m. McClure, of the Phila- “ — vSetaaSsa- in Massachusetts, Mar -land, Kew Jersey, and New York <u November <L Congressman Lamb of the oighth district is said to be the only number of the Indiana delegation who favors the election of Randall as Speaker of the House. Tho rest arc for Carlisle, of Kentucky, A meeting of the trustees of Asbu-; rv University was held at Indianapolis on the 4th last., when reports of subscriptions made to the endowment fund of die institution showed a balance of $19,000 yet .to be raised before Mr. DePauw’s proposed bequest Q can be secured, Ur to 1853 Ohio was a Democratic state because the farmers voted with the Democratic party. For thirty years a majority of them were deluded' into the support of the monopolists, but now they have returned to ti ck ancient allegiance, and phio is a Democratic state once more—aud Democratic to stay. The most forcible objection Against the proposed plan of giviug Fationai •assistance to the public school s_ is the fact that auch aid to distinct 6 ate institutions is always followed by Federal supervision or interference. In . brief,, the plan contemplates s school system fostered by office seek rs and • controlled by office hoiders. TR* Massachusetts Republican State ommittee announces a list of ISO speaker?, re ading In that State, who are & takTan active pa -tin the campaign. The committee also pro. Iso the services of distinguished men from otht :• States. —I Vincennes Commercial. All nscless. Butler is sure to he elected. The people have decided that the Republican party must go, and ail the speakers in the universe “ can’t save it.
As Groat Britan will require 150,000,000 knsliels of foreign win at before the uext harvest, and as tlie crop of Europe as a whole is less ban it was a year ago, the demand for American wheat ought to be brisk, and our entire surplus will doubtless be marketed at prices satisfactory o producers and promotive t,o trade fenerally. 1 Tue Republican Supreme Court of ttie United States have knocked the civil rights bill into smithereei s. If a Democratic Court had made the decision, it would never have heard the last of it. The decision protects managers of hotels, theaters and restaurants from prosecution if they exclude colored people. The decision a implies only to the States. The fixed purpose of the p rotectionist* is to abolish internal re renue taxation and saddle the war ta iff on the country for an indefinite : ?ngth 1 of time. If they can not aboli h the internal revenue they are des erate ' enough to try and plunge the c« jntry into a foreign war to keep up the enormous tariff taxation for the ' the subsidized group. .
The editor of the Chicago Tribune, u influential 'Republican paper, gays hat the high protective tariff of the lepubliean party is fleecing the farrai*3v “The Republican papers general- ] v hate to'see such frank admiissious ’ nade touching their cMef party doc- ] r'uic, and they aro industriously be- ( ating and abusing the editor of the ' L'ribune. for his ton candid state- . nents. __ ! This returns tVom Ohio are full of j mrpriscs, to the Itcpublicans. Con- 1 rary to all their expectations the j Democrats lost ground in the cities ind gained in the rural districts. The 1 farmers are learning that the high protective tariff of tlio Republican party il fleecing them to pay a boun- ' ty to the monopolist, and they arc leaving; the part} like rats from a sinking ship.
Mr. Henry S. Bennett, who has been appointed postmaster at Evansville tejsuceced F. M. Thayer, who resigned his office and sold out his business because of “the interchange of a kiss” between himself and a pretty widow, is a machine appointment. Bennett is a boss, which Thay er never was. Blithe is not the kind of man to apologize in public fbr kissing the girls.—^Cincin nati New s-Jon rnal. Rti.flv Mahon e is small, but he thinks "lie is biggor thau all the civil service reformers in his party, lie has issued an order demanding five per cent, of the salaries of tho employes of the New York Navy yard, fur the purpose ot perpetuating Mahonism in old Virginia Bill knows what kind of a thing the Republican party is under the “jieelin,” and he is •not much afiaid of being punished for collecting fuuds to do his part of the work for the grand old party. It will he iiu order now for the Republicans to look about them for the causes of defeat in Ohio and discomfiture in Iowa. The only consolation is that the Democratic majority in. Ohio is not so large as last year; hut this is oilket by the sad reflection that stalwart Iowa is becoming a debatable state, through the influence of prohibition and tariff. Less absenteeism at Washington; less Doirseyism and Bradyism; less bossism, and separation of prohibition and politics, would have a good effect.—[Evansville Journal. Tiie Republican organs all (dong' tho liuc admit that they can not even; hold their strongliolds without the lavish expenditure of money, and are berating the leaders of’ their party unmercifully because they do not come down more liberally with the “scads.” The St. Louis Globe-Demo - crat goes for John Sherman as follows : “A 1-ecnt fund to rc-imburse Senator Sherman for Ills lavish contribution of $100 to the Ohio Republican campaign fund would be about the right tiling now. Mr. Sherman ought not to he allowed to impoverish himself for the benefit of the Republican party;” In dimmer cblumn"bT7lils Issim\Je publish the pension roll of Pike corn: * ty. We copy the list from the Evansvillo Journal. It was made up from the s books of the pension office, as they stood on the 1st of January , 1883 and is published by order of the Unit - ed States Senate, and is official. The list embraces the names of pensioners, cause for which pensioned, and amount allowed permo^th in each case. These lists have been justly denominated the “roll *of honor,” which they undoubtedly arc in reference to the large majority of cases. There are * some, however, in this county, as well as others, where it iis extremely difficult to discern any adequate cause for the continuance of pension, whatever there may have been at first. The publication of the list! in the several localities will have a wholesome Effect in giving credit to whom credit is due for sacrifices in behalf of the Union, and ilk pointing out to the public the few oases that undoubtedly exist, whore the government has been imposed on by unscrupulous persons who are not lit nor fair subjects for public bounty.. It is ft feet not generally known that, when the Capitol at Washington was built, and when the dom» was crow ned with the great bronaentatne, the fbtuire of Washington seemed to lie in the eastern section,- known w Capitol Hill. The back of the Capitol was turned on the western section of the city, and Liberty was mounted .with her face towards the east, This abnormally lifted real estate values in the favored section, while the section back of the Capitol suffered a corresponding decrease. With keen American instinct, these low pricod lands were bought up by those who foresaw an early revolution in the tendency of improvement. High pricen soon wore upon Capitol Hill, and rapidly did its prestige succomb to tho strides
vt Jiiipiuvciiium* hi ^uiunvcsi vr awningtogi. Bat the Capitol could not turn with this change; still its back door looks upon the portion of tho city which is the pride of the Nation, while its flout is turned to a comparatively baire section in which property can be bought at the lowest figures. It is proposed to transform the back of the Capitol into a front of the most elaborate design, and the time is not far distant when the improvement will be added to the • many now in progress.__ A lost mail bag is tho latest sensation. It was full of registered! letters snd probably contained thousands of letters. It was lost at the Union Depot postoffice. It was in charge of Sir. Griffith, and how it got away from Him is a mystery. Inspectors have seen here looking the matter up, but so far have made no discovery of the out mail 'bag. It in unfortunate that t should be the one containing; rcgiisered letters.—[Indianapolis Herald. Turn the rasca’s out and there ‘mysteries” will not happen so often, fho Republican party must go. • t How about the old saw “as goes o goes the presidential election
