There are still s. few individuals who honestly believe that by discontinuing their newspapers and advertisements they will thereby force the paper to suspeud publication. Such people are a very unfortunate and misguided class, to say the least. In American history there ate no more interesting figures thau the Heroes and Heroines of the Border. Bold, dashing, adventurous and patriotic; loyal to friends, to country add to the interests of society, their work was singularly affective in the advancement of American civilization. With seeming recklessness, their efforts were in the interest of law and order, and the people owe-them a debt of gratitude they do not forget. Their Sage in history is as fascinating as it fll nonorat ble, and there is a peculiar I pleasure in reading the narrative of
their wonderful exploits. The times which produced those heroes' and heroines mark a period in American history ot absorbing interest alike to old and young. It is proper that it should be so. These hardy pioneers coupled virtue with courage, humanity and love of country with the stern duties of frontier life and battle, and the example of theiir lives not only interests but strengthens our faith* and admiration in humau courage and unselfish purpose. la American pioneer history there are %ree distinct eras marked as distinctly by three geographical divisions ; from \hw Allegheny Mountains to the MiSsis^/bi, marking the first; from the Mississippi to the Rocky Mountains the second; California and the Pacific Slope the third. The settlement of these vast regions developed great leaders, whose achievements have made them justly and widely famous. They have a warm place in the hearts of the people, and a prominent one in their aduiiratiou. It is appropriate that their achievements should be recorded, and we note with ple&mre the forthcoming off a new bookT upw ready, from the press of N. D. Thompson & Co., Publishers, New York and St. Louis, Mo., called: “Conquering the Wilderness, or New Pictorial History of thel^feaud Times of The Pioneer Heroes/and Heroines , of America.” It is written by-Col. Frank Triplett, an accomplished writer, whose literary qualifications and neat experience to the frontiers are stud to eminently lit him for so noble »task. A special feature of the book is its . apt and protose illustration, embrac- , Ing 2)0 superb engravings, illustrate I ing incidents and persons—the latter . embracing nearly 100 life-like portraits, of pioneer leaders, never before . given—men and women—which make . ft a sort of picture gallery, as well as i 1 book of thrilling narrative, that will lenalo the book a charm and interest not to be resisted. It fs sold by subscription, throngfa • canvassing agents and prese nts an op- » portnnity to agents to make money i especially inviting. We advertise it in another column.

T, lSSS, Elizabeth A. SklbY, aged TO years and i months. As fell the leaves when the summer has faded into the nutunin, so sank this aged and loving mother into the fentle embrace of that sleep which nows no dreams. For three-fourths of a century she stood in rank with the noblest of her sex, grandly fulfilling the sweetest offices of woman kind— that of sister, wife, mother and friend. She was the mother of a large family all of whom are among our very best people. They are John O. M., Jeremiah, Gedrge, Henry and lowrv G. Seibv, Mrs, Burrii Kinnian, Mrs.Warren Cash, Mrs. Josiah Colvin, and Mrs. John B. T. Hearing. The deceased was a sister of Janies and Henry (now deceased), Richard, Lowrv and'Jeremiah Gladish. Her long life was crowded full of the labors and incidents of “ye olden times,” when pioneer hardships were among the allotments to all who converted a wilderness of woods into an invitiur abode. The years which whitened her hair and furrowed her brow and sapped her frame, wd to ripen and sweeten her trust In tenderness, even down to the grass-covered bed, where tired humanity sleeps upon the breast of the infinite. The remains were conveyed .to White Church on Monday last, where an immense throng listened to an eloquent funeral sermon by Rev. J. B. Madden, after which the parting look was taken amidst sobs and tears of stricken relatives and friend*, and the gentle sleeper was laid to rest beneath the sod. uVh. LEGAL ADVERTISEMENTS.
