Olliphaut; Esq., of Clay township, the occasion being a party in honor of the Misses Spain, who were visiting there Mr. and Mrs. Olliphant, as host‘and hostess, dispensed their hospitality in a very agreeable manner, and all present felt that it was indeed pleasant to be there. The Portersyille correspondent of the Jasper Courier pays the following compliment to one of Peterburg's ablest ministers: Kev. J. B. Madden, formerly pastor here, but now the minister at Petersburg, preached oue of his ablest sermons here last Suuday. When it became known that Mr. Madden was to preach here every oue for miles around made preparations id come, and by tHe time church commence^ more than enough people were on the ground to fill the church twice. The minister arose, gave out his text, and for more than an hour the people were enraptured by the magie of his voice. I)a« Catt,‘ a young man of Clay township, met with a rather severe accident at Union last Sunday afternoon. He in company with Miss Thirza Phillips, was buggy riding, and, in attempting to pass another buggy, his horse shied and ran into a ditch, overturning the "buggy and ; throwing them both out. Me held onto the lines and was dragged some distauee, bruising him up in a very painful manner and rendering him unconscious fdr several hours'. He is at present considered out of danger and in a fair way to speedy recovery. Bliss Phillips fortunately escaped unhurt. It might be mentioned as a strange co- incidence that at the same time'the accident happened to Dan. a little [ brother of his fell out of a stable loft I at his mother's home, three miles from Uuion, sustaining very painful I injuries; Program of the Clay township 13. The company will at once begin the survey of t wo routes into Washington to aseertaitr which is the most practicable, one leaving the present line at Sandyliook, tvro miles beyond the river, the other near Maysyille. The work of construction will commence as soon as the route is established and pushed rapidly to completion, In voting the tax the citizens of Washington did a wise thing and arc to he congratulated upon the prospect of soon having direct , railroad connection with so live a town as Petersburg. On Tuesday of last week Mr. Henry Dress anil his family-living, about two miles south of Hu.utingbnrg, were working in the harvest field and at supper time he missed a young lady daughter who had been helping in the lieli}, and inquired where she was.
