Mr. CaL Sitsnlnger, late teacher from Polk township, is :Un;r Tim Indiana SrJsKl Jwrntjl Map of Indiana. This map Is complete ju a railroad and commercial map of Indiana. It is SCx40 inchfs, contains marginal notes and explanations of the soil, surface, Minerals, grains, timber, railroads, schools, liv- stock, etc., which 'u particularly iijortant to teachers. 2Ir. fcinniner talks very much like one of them (?;, and will sell any teacher a map upon terms to suit. Examine the maps; they are a source of Information, cheap. A. Kate Huron, in an article on children's first compositions in school, ays; "It is difficult to Ull which is deserving of more sympathy, the teacher, or the boy whose fate brought him on the Monday morning list, when he said: 'Ob, ;xl above, look dowc ia love, And pity our condition ; We have a fool to t--arli our school, Ant he 's n abolition.' " Let tills not be said of any of our summer teachers, but let your judgments direct you in your rhetorical exercises, and you can ar l will make them profitable and interesting to your pupils... ' ; Institute. The teachers of Center township will hold their first institute for this summer term In. tha Ward! school building, this city, next Saturday, May 4th. Mr. Palmer, the trustee, has notified his teachers and sent topics to i.Lem, and expects that none will be absent unless by sickness, and that each topic, assigned .will have been well calculated before its presentation. The Marshall County Teachers' Association will hold its spring session at the same time and place; therefore a happy reunion may be looked for. All teachers of tha county are requested to attend this meeting. I wish to remind trustees that the law requires these institutes to be held, at leat one in each month, during the time the schools are in session. The summer teachers are largely composed of young and inexperienced parties who are greatly in need of all means contei?? plated for their improvement; therefore, let them have their much needed institutes, and let the teachers see that these summer institutes are yaluable for them, as they will be if properly patronized and encouraged. Ciood Teaching- and Proper Government Inseparably Linked Tojjctlicr. The following is taken fro-n The Norjnal TeacJier and is written by "W. F. Ilarper, who has a correct idea of Xormal school train log and its principles: " 'Any system of Bchool government not founded upon the intrinsic worth of teaching, tho inherent excellence of the teacher's own character, ancl a sensible trust in the general truthfulness and honesty of human nature, is false, mischievous and deceitful. School government is tou frequently considered apart from teaching, as something separate from it. Again and again come to our ears expressions like these: "I would like teaching if it were not for the governing. I have n't time to keep order. I woul 1 like to teach in a high school wheta there would be no governing to do." As long as teachers consider governing and teaching as separate oflices, just so long government will be of the lower or brute character; just so long, rules, ferules and force punishments will be necessary; just so long the work of the school room will be burdensome and hateful to teachers and pupils alike. This notion of government us an office independent of teaching, is the offspring of ignorance, pnd the fosterchild of indolent credulity. Some " high toned chap" with h'13 head full of .Latin phrases ami self-conoit,' comes from school or college, obtains the village school as a means of replenishing his fwell-drkiued pocketbook. After he has been duly inducted into his new position, through crucial (!) test, a county examination (in which our hero " speaks never a word," but transfers to paper well committed answers) and a contract with the trustee, he proceeds " to peddle out " to his pupils all the things, wise and f otherwise, which he can remember having heard his professor say. He calls this teaching, and his credulous 1 patrons and astonished pupils believe him. If the boys have shot paper balls across the room, played tricks on the teacher (?), and " failed to solve their problems and analyze their sentences; if the girls have gfggled and whispered, and prepared for the next party, when they should have prepared for the next lesson, people remark: "Ah, well, he can't govern. He is a splendid teacher, but he can't keep order. He knows enough and can tell . it, but he lets the big boys get away with him." - r-, s - ' - ' The next winter a governor is employed. We want a man this lime who will make our children toe the mark. Our school is pretty badly de- , moralized, but all it needs is a master, a man who lets his pupils know he Is master, and then sticks up to it." Xearlj every township has one such teacher. lie is sent for. With the tread of a mighty conqueror he' walks into the sen-xtl noted for insubordination. YSitb the bearing of a powerful potentate he reads off his list of rules with terrible penalties attached ; an J woe be unto the transgressor. Soilness reigneth! Instead of the unrestrained mischief of romping beys and firls, we now bt hold almost desih-likic silence. There . is . not" jtuSiclczi, frea-'-'V33 for independent thought or na-carU-d action. The recitations consist

cf formal parroting of the books, and are cf.'en J-t in the dell languor aii' unbearable stupidity of tho ssrro tradings. As a natural conscience, the chiiuren boon hate the teacher, the school, and their books', and either grow absolutely ir.diJTerer.. or leave the school in sheer disgust. Little is learned. Ills patrons then b?j: "We knew he was n't much of a teacher, but we wanted a man who would govern and keep order. Children must learn to mind if tbc-y don't learn anything else." We have taken extreme cases, but the writer ia acquainted with the persons described, and vouches for the truthfulness of the picture. Just such practices, differing only in degree, have taught the people that teaching and governing are independent" of each other; that one. can exist without the other, but that both are very seldor.i united in the same individual. We maintain that any correct method of teaching involves in itself a proper, rational and natural plan of government. In other words, a properly taught school will be elf-govern-ing. Very much depends upon proper preliminary drill. Oneway: The next lesson extends to the bottom of page ninety-six. Class excused!" A better way : Place a model on the board illustrating the method by which you want the next lesson prepared. : Have the model copied by the class. Assign special problems to be solved on paper and presented to yon for criticism. Ue sure to call for these solutions, and never fail to criticise them. ' ; - Be very definite In assigning the lessons to small pupils, and be sure that every one knows what to do and how to do it, before be leaves the reci

tation seat. Encourage the larger pu pils to prepare original models and so lutions, and be very careful to cause them to think there 1s an interesting mystery in connection with every succeeaing lesson, ou thus send your pupils from tit recitation just as eager to study out the next lesson as if it were some game or puzzle. The work must be made attractive and Intensely Interesting. To accom plish this, the teacher must be thor oughly in earnest, and so full of his subject and devices for illustration that attent.jn will be secured without effort. There is no need for the schoolroom's being a barren and unattractive place, or the work of the schoolroom dry and monotonous. It contains the buds of immortality just blossoming into beauty; each petal has a different tint, and all the golden hues of rosyfingered morn ;may be so artistically blended as completely to conceal from view the darker shades. Any teacher who fails to throw about his teaching alluring attractions, and to bedeck it with the beauties of illustration, belit- & es his vocation, and worse than belittles himself. The school room, no lss than the studio, or the church itstlf ?rens up? into God's boundless heaven. Each of the sciences ha3 moral relations, and terminates in spiritual mystery. All nature has arrayed herself in her brightest robes for the true teacher. The growing ccra, the waving grain, the little acorn, tLe giant oak, the earth's velvety carpet of green, and ev&n the neglected jimson by the roadside, each furnishes a lesson of untold interest and of inestimable value. Yonder setting sun paints upon the canvas of nature a picture far more impressing in aspect, more glorious in character, than a Michael Angelo or a Raphael ever conceived. It is our business, teachers, to lead forth the minds of our pupils by objects like these, to awaken them with noble thoughts, and to arouse every latent energy of their bouIs. When we do this we are teach,1 ing them eternal principles, governing their thoughts and actions; yea, controlling their destiny. DRY GOODS.
