We are repeatedly told, too, that -we must teach our pupils to be tidy, when at the same time our school yards are thrown open to all the hogs, cattle, etc, that may happen to pass along our way.' These congregate around our very
doors, and sometime have the impudence to walk right in, requiring a great amount of persuasion on our
part to induce them to q ait our happv abodes. They will root around our very
doors, making receptacles for the next rain that chances to fall thir
continue their work by mixing a mortar, through which the teacher and
pupils are obliged to wade, in order to
get into the room. Now, how much
respect can wo er.pect our pupils to
nave ior sucn a place as this, or of
their own personal appearance, when obliged to remain day after day in such a filthy, uninviting place as this?
ot m uch, surely.
But when our patrons get to be so much interested in the welfare of the
schools as to take an interest in these
things, and try to remedy the evils by offering to build fences, sidewalks and
the like, free of charge, if the trustee
will provide the materials, he is told i. . i ... .....
uy mat aumonty mat there is no money for any such purpose, and there
the matter drops ; and we go on with the mud, vermin and filth, and can do nor say nothing, because there is no 'y of getting out of this trouble, and we must get along wit a them the best we can. Xow, if there is no i and at the command of our trustees i'or the erection of fences, sidewalks, doorsteps, etc, I simply say that there had better be some arrangements made for -such a fund, and not insult our teachers and pupils any longer, by asking them to wear their best clothes, and to present a neat and tidy appearance, in such miserably untidy buildings and surroundings as these. I shall mention other disadvantages, and although the last I shall name, is not the least in importance, and that is the absence and tardiness of pupils. We have all, no doubt, been annoyed almost beyond endurance by the absence of our pupils from school, and
their lack of punctuality, and yet we have not had the power to prevent it Teachers, I think, more than any one els.', know the deleterious effects upon the school, as well as the pupil him
self, when such things are of frequent
occurrence in their schools.
For instance, a class at the begin
ninS of the term, starts in together,
and all goes along smoothly until some
one is absent from one or two recita
tions. When the absentee returns, he
does not know what the lesson is, and troubles the teacher, or some of the pupils to tell him where to find it. He
works along in a disinterested way, for he has a poor understanding of the
lesson under consideration, when the
previous ones are unknown to him.
vonsequeniiy, wnen ne comes to re
cite, he is not well prepared, and the teacher's time is bestowed upon him, in the vain effort to make him under
stand what the rest of the class already know, and they are losing the time
that should be given to their instruc
tion.
I his thing is repeated time after time with the most unfavorable results. Tardiness is an evil that is much more
prevalent, but I think not so hurtful
in us influence over the school, yet it
has its serious drawbacks.
One of the most disagreeable habits
we can form, is that of always being
behind time. If we are late to school
we uuuuy me wnoie scnooi. aad per
haps lose a recitation, or some valu
able information, and besides this, we are forminir a bad habit that will trn
with us through life.
"We will be latf at public and social
entertainments, will make engagements and not meet them, and and an
air of carelessness, and shift!
will pervade all our actions.
I suppose a plan was tried a year or
two since, to lessen the amount of tar
diness and absence in our schools, but if so, it fell far short of accomDlishine-
the resulfrequired. I What I alude to is this: Our county ' superintendent furnished us with
