Democrat : The burden of 9 news which most conc-ponde-ts dwell on who write IVrmi rustic shade and rural villages, i.i a chronic effort fn scold Bouicbodj. to " raise the wind," find a fiswhrTome cuiiTitiiitee'a work, brag on the weather, rr ventilate the character cfuouic unfortunate citizen. In short, they arc a wlf-appointed censorious critic upon the order o! things in general, and seldom suggts any kind of salve that will henl tlieso social s -res. From any such intention in this letter, I say, with reverential head, " Good Lord, deliver me." Jot I- have thought that our state capital our beautiful city here is not beard from in your paper as often as it deserves, and sometimes matters of a general nature do not reach your columns; so I will takeu; the ends of the strands of haps and happenings, and weave them together os best I may. There are not a few of us here who hail from old Plymouth rock, and though we are well satisfied here we have not wandered from our first Jove; and every Friday morning the " home" paper is looked for and its local page read '.be first thin:;. Even the adver- ( tiscmenta arc read ' with care," and we note with as much interest as jour home readers, that Col. Poo is ftill selling coal oil for30cts, that John Mueller has moved his tonsorial establishment, or ' mt l. ' Q. Thayer's warehouse is "so crowded with grain that he meditates getting up a " corner" on wheat. Our slate legislature has been setting In reguUr session about ten days. From the beginning of its special session, the J iicliiina tr -- ' .T .- . Vfin., i1ii i-j a uia ire 10 luiprove upon the past legislation -and do .i sensible work for the state. The question of a new state building will undoubtedly receive attention before the session closes. The temperance people are petitioning the august bodies with long array of names for more stringent temperance laws. Then the strong-minded are on band, with their story of long endured martyrdoms, and their heaven-intended rights, long trampled under foot. Two of the woman suffrage shriokers entertained tho legislate re in joint session last "Friday afternoon. They prayed the venerable body that tho olie branch of h pe might be reached out to their ;Jjwn trodden sex. and that petticoats might have their say in the affairs cf government. The meeting would have been a decided bit, but for one circumstance; the speakers were emissaries of the national woman's grievance association, aud iu lecturinc here had not conferred with the president of thj state Sorosis association. Tho president, 3Irs. Swank, sat in the audience till the lecturers were nearly through, when her indignation cculd bo kept down no longer, and she rushed like a Earning metoor to the rostrum and opened tho vials of her vindictive wrath upon the too unauthorized invaders, -.Sliefuuaed the air with licr arms, and denounced the two women in the name of all that was fearful. At this crisis a tuition was made? to adjourn, which was carried, and the crowd ruhed like the dew on the flowret or the snow-flake on the river. And ot euch is woman suffiago. Last Friday witnessed the outgoing of the old state tfHcers, and the inauguration of the new ones. The old officers were genial and pleasant gentlemen, and tbo good wishes of many friends will follow them whercer they may go I fay genial and pleasant gentlemen, and I speak whereof I kuow at least to some extent, far among their duties bas been to answer tho pumping questions put to them - every day without excepttou by ihe newspaper reporters, to which thoy always gave an attentive car, and tlio press owe llieui and their dt-puties especial thanks fur the bundles of news so often received from them. The governor, tinee di;-po-sing of liu honic.Htca 1 abvui a year ago. has been living aithe Kates house; but recently purchased a residence on North Tennessee street, which had been built by the 'bird Prcbyf erian church for a parsonage. The hou.se bad ju:-t been completed nud furnished but a few dava before his inaugural. It was the first public reception given by a new governor for a good while. The genial governor and his estimable lady received the guests in the friendliest of manner, and made them feel as much " at hoiiie " as though they had been under their own loofc The members of the legislature laid aside their regal robes, forgot the affairs of state, and mingled with the throng that greeted the governor and his wife in their new home. Last Wednesday evening, 3Irs. Win. IJraden ravived the old time custom of entertaining the members of the legislature at a private reception. The custom has bee.i neglected for some time, owing to t!;e inharmonious feeling of the members, and this, the first of a series of like entertainments, is to be commended, os it is a work of respect and honor that tho city owes to the solons who come here to make their homes awhi.'c. The amusement season is at its height, and lovers of the drama arc en joying a rare season of star actors. Last week the I2iack Crook, with its gorgeous array of scenery and studied economy of dress, played a successful engagement, lasting tho entire week. To-morrow evening Olive Logan will make her last appearance in this city, prior to her final retirement from the lecture field. Last night llubinstcin and Wieniauski gave their farewell concert to Indianapolis. The former, as you know has a world-wide reputation as a pianist, aud is without an equal as a ticklcst of the ivories: Wicniauski yani s the most accordant symphonies fro-n the cultivated cat-gut of any liddlist esUnt. unless we except Ole Bull. They have given two concerts here this winter, and the pcoplo have gone crazy over their performances. In another letter provided you pub li.-di this all right, aud put in capitals where I have marked them I will havo something to say of our. newspapers, which from their nature deserve more than a passing notice. Indianapolitan. Inihanapolis fan., 2Sih, 1S73. .... Eds Democrat : When I began to muke preparations to leave Plymouth I thought of the many sacrifices we would have to make, and important among them was to be deprived of the privilege of the school kept by the Missess Kinney ar d Nichols I have always considered it one of the institutions of Plymouth, that the patrons could not well afford to lose, but from the present patronage they cannot expect to keep them. I have not heard thcui speak of it, but was sorry to learn from others, while in Plymouth recently that unless they could be better patronized they would bo compelled to change their location. I also learn that they bad strong inducements offered to leave Plymouth. Thoir school is per haps uot second to any in the state, wHJe l'l y mouth can boast of a very well managed public school, yet with the room and conveniences they have, it is imprssiblc to do justice to the number that attend the school. Those who may have a preference for sectarian schools can have such privilege, .but it would seem that there are those who wouU prefer that their children should not be under tho influence of any particular religious or political organization, while they are in school, and I believe this school to be entirely free from any thing that mi-ht tend to bias the mind of children. I think the patrons of this school cannot afford to lose such a privilege without an effort to keep it. licspcctfully, 11. B. 1ickson. Bremf.s Isi, Feb 20t 1873. Editor Democrat. The health in town and vicinity is very good, no sickness of any consequence; the result is the physicians have little or nothing to do, yet they are in good spirits and high glee. The winter term of our public school will close iu about six weeks, the a .tendanec is on a general average regular. Persons who claim to bo posted, sav that the snow in the woods on an average is about 28 inches deep. Judicious advertising always pays. Large type isn't necessary in adver tising. Blind lolks don't read newspapery. Don't bo afraid to invest in printer's ink, lest yours sands of life be nt-arlv run out. Never run down your opponent's goods in public. Let him him do his advertising. Let your advertisements have something of the dasH in them without great exaggeration. You can't cat enough in one day to last a whole year, and you can't advertise on that plan either. It's as true of advertising as of anything else in tho world if it is worth doins at all it is worth doinc wlb Hand-bills and circulars arc good of their kind, but they can't take the place of newspaper advertisements. Injudicious advertising is like fish ing where there's no fish. You need to let the lines fall in the right place. No bell can ring so loudly as a good advertisement. Tootle wi!l !.1 what they sec rather than what thev hear. Small advertisements and plenty of them is a good rule. We were all babies oace, yet wc made considerable noise. When yon advertise, see that you do it on the same principal that that yon buy goods. Get the most you can for tho money. We don't recommend advertising as the best way to get a wife ; but we know that it is the best way to get a good trade
