The LaportC lb rain', ..f last Saturday, probably surprised its readers by telling some plain truths on this subject, in this wsy : 'The Indianapolis Journal does not like Ex Secretary Cox's political antocedents. It avers that he loved A. Schemes to Defeat the Formation of a New Partv. The Washington correspondent of the New York Journal of Commerce says: 'The present congress will terminate on the 4th of March next, and under the present law the I2d congress will assemble immediateiy upon the adjournment of the 41st. An ingenious plan
has been fixed upon to delay the threatened coalition between the democrats and revenue reform republicans, and prevent the possibility of overhauling the tariff bill. The plan is to repeal the law organizing the new congress oh March 4. and by that means to delay ill meeting till the first Monday in December, 1871. The advantage the radicals expect to gaiu in this proceeding will be contingent entirely upon the result of the election to be held next fall. They expect by hard work to overcome the gains of the democracy in i the different states, and to realize a gain of votes among the congressmen who are certain, without being checked, to give their votes to the conservative side of the tariff question ; that result to be the tuoral effect of a republican victory It is imitted that this will be a hazardous :es: of doubtful republican congressmen, as it will either awe them into the paity lines or force them into conservation bordering on democracy. If the republicans should happen to lose Indiana and Illinois next fall, they will give up further hope." With the risk of losing Pennsylvania, too, at that time, their hopes are anything but brilliant. This question is earnestly debated here, and congressmen on both sides are looking forward with anxiety to a defection in republican ranks umcng members in the present house, as it is rumored that some few of the Wi tern and several southern representatives are expected to step out, emboldened by the result of the late elections, which they consider an indorsement of the revenue reform movement. With a nucleus of this kind a new party, with a presidential candidate for 1872, is no longer consuiereu an lmprooaoiimy. 11 is highly probable that the law organ izinu the next eoBgresi on the heels of this w:U be repealed to carry out the radical programme. Timely Hints. We find the following timely hints in a coteuiporary and commend them to be serious perusal of our readers : Now that winter is approaching it behooves parents more than ever to see that their childred are
clothed in such a manner as to protected j them trom the inclemency and sudden change of the weather. The chief cause of infantile mortality, in addition to fonl air, or too ritch or too poor food, is the false pride of many mothers. Children are killed by the manner in which they are dressed as certainly as by any other cause. In our changeable climate children of the most tender age are left with bare arms and legs, and with low-necked dresses. The moth us. in the same dress, would shiver and shake with cold, and expect a fit of sickness as the result of their culpable carelessness. And yet the mothers could endure such treatment with far less dancer to health and life than their tender infants can. A mother's reflec tion indicate the effects of this mode of dressing, or rather want of dressing, on the child. The moment the cold are strikes its bare arms and legs, the blood is driven from these extremities to the internal and more vital organs. The result is congestion, to a grater or less extent of these organs. Felon on the Finger. Many persons are liable to extreme suffering from felons on the finger. These afflictions are not only very painfull, but not unfrccjuently occasion permanent crippling of the members affectedThe following simple prescriptioni rec ommended as a cure for the distressing ailment : Take common rock salt, such as is used for salting down pork and beef, dry it in an oven, then pound it fine, and mix with spirits of terpenine in equal parts. Put it on a rag and wrap around the part affected, and as it gets dry, put on more, and in twentyfour hours you are cured the felon "will be dead. It will do no harm to try it.
