came down again, and another day was passed in uncertainty and doubt. During the afternoon, I endeavored to form s me idea of the size of the berg, but was unable to do so. The highest point we could see appeared to be about one hundred and fifty feet in altitude ; but it
JV Ä Plt5 on which we spent our first night, that we could not ascend it, so were unaDie to form any conjecture as to its shape or size. One fear a'one haunted me, and that was that it might capsize, and I could not help remembering that 1 had on previouj occa anv warning, save a premonitory rocking but this was not destined to be our fate, and our third night passed unmarked by anv accident. About noon of the fourth day the glorious sun shone out, and quickly dispelled the fog, and our eyes were gladdened by the sight of the distant shorts of Newfoundland. Anxiously was the horizon scanned for fishing-vessds, but none were seen; and then I remembered that it was Sunday, and that most of the boats would have made their ports the hiebt before. Our own boats were s'ove and useless, so all we could do was to hold the usual Sunday service, and patiently await the advent of another day. Next morning we were up betimes; but hour aftrr hour passed and still no welcome sail hove in sight, and we felt the full truth of " hope deferred maketh the heart sick ;" but just before sunset, the welcome cry of " Sail, oh !" sent a flood of joy to our bosoms, and a couple of fishing-boats were seen heading well up for u-.. To charge our remaining mounted gun and fire it was but the work of a moment, and before the smoke had cleared awav, we had the joy of seeing them steer direct for us. All was row happiness and joy. and I thought no better time could be chosen for seüding up our thanks for our almost miraculous preservation Soon after this was done the boats hove to chse under the schooner's stern, and heaving lines to us we were brought alongside. Unbounded was the astonishment of the fishermen, and hearty and warm their congratulations on our escape. I at once chartered them to convey ourselves and as many of our stores as could be saved, to St. John's; and, next day, having removed into them as much as they could cirry, we set fire to the wreck, and made sail for that port, where we arrived safely, and from whence I returned to Halifax by packet. Arriving there, we were tried by Court of Inquiry for the loss ( f the schooner, fully acquitted of ail blame, and cocgratulated on our f -.rtunite escape. Do my readers wonder that I shudder at Ice? Make Them A CORRESPONDENT of the Bosloil Jour nal of C'nmi t p states there is no doubt that the giruiiDg of lruit trees is a cause ot abundant iruitatre, out it Dy no means follows from this fact that a eraieral prin ciplecan be deduced, that tues would be improved, or the crop increased for a series of years, by such treatment It is well known that gardeners frequently girdle a branch by removing a narrow ring of bark around it, when they wlah to in crease the size; and beauty of the fiuit; but it is done at the expense of ifs vitality, and, unless the op. ration is a ill r illy performed, will invariably destroy it bciore the season of bearing the next yiar. The crude sip, taken up from the soii by the ro ts of the tree, ascends principally through the vascular tiseae of the alburnum or tap-wood to the leavee of the branches, and there boih this and the carlon of the carbonic acid, absorbed from the air by the leares, are orcaiiizL'd into the propir Bubstanoe for the growth of the wood and truit. who ie pleaded with hta success in raiding beets and swi des, gives this method, which he has followed for five year9 in produciDg crops at a cost of not more than six cents a bushel, as follows : In the fir.-t place I have my ground fllplowed and well covered with good manure. Do not be afrakl of using too much. In the spring plow it again, using a sub soil plow, breaking he subsoil, but not throwing it to the top. Have the ground smooth and free from umps and stone. Mark out your ground in rows two feet apart, so you c m U9e a horse all you can Most of the one-horse cultivators in use can be set close enough to work within a few inches of the row?. If you have not a good seed drill you can sow by hand, but the crop will cost you more. When the plants are up so you can tell them trom the weeds, then commence work, and do not put it off I use a sharp hoe in thinning them out. With a little practice one need do but little weeding by hand. Keep your hore going as often as once or twice a week thrcugh the forepart of the season. I select about as dry a time as I can ee' about the rlr.-t of November, to bar vest them. Take a shaTp hre, cut off the tops aLd rake them in heaps to feed out ; hitch your corses to a s ibsoil plow; let them walk on each side of the row; run the plow close to the row and not too deep, and you w ill be able to pick them up easier than so many stoms If you have cot cellar room, put them on the ground in not too large piles.
