Commissioner's euurt convenes next Monilay. The Pre9nvterhn SoeimMi will meet this afternoon and evening at the resi. dence of 0. E. Toan. Tni winter term of the Chapel school commenced last Monday; Miss Barber teacher. Mrs. Harriet Locke or Brooke formerly well known in this town, died in St. Louis on the 14th nit. TnE proceedings of the Teacher't Institute held at this place last week, were handt-d iu too late for publication this week, bat will appear in full in our next issue. Mori deer and turkeys hare been killed in our county this season than during any one season within the five years last past Last Friday, a number of passenger coaches marked ''Central Pacific R. R. of California" passed over the P. Ft. W. & C. ntPway, homeward bound. Paspengers for the Pacific coat init:ht have taken passage in these cars, and gone through without transfer. THE peace and dignity of the state was outraged at In wood, a few days ago, by two citizens thereof engaging in a fi"ht. Justice Osborne thought SO and eosts would heal the state's wounded honor. Wl neglected, last week, to call attention to the advertisements of A. C. & A. B. Capros. They are careful, prompt and energetic nen, who are in every way worthy of the very extensive business which they are now doing. Plymouth presented a very business like appearance last Saturday, if the number of people and teams on the street could be taken as an indication of the amount of business being done. It is the opinion of those wli3 have means of knowing that the minder of delinquent tax payers will be much greater this year than heretofore Tight tiaxes afTect the collection of taxes and pi inters bills first of all. Attention is callad to our market report in to-days paper. In the future we intend this t o be a regular and reliable feature of our paper. The report will be corrected promptly and carefuiiy up to Wednesday noon of each week. The firm of Oc.lesbeb, Mattixoi.y & Black are making a much-needed improvement on (lano street, in front of their mill-yard, by filling it with sawdust, which will be more pleasant travel over than to go through the mudThe improvement is all the more commendable, being an individual enterprise. If the corporate authorities would secure the raising and repair of the side walk, in tue same vicinity, their action would receive favorable comment. Tu Democrat office is now better than ever prepared to do job work in the best style, and on reasonable termsOne of the proprietors will give his attention to this department; and we intend that the quality of our work shall not be excelled by any establishment in Northern Indiana. a great amount of blowirg to the contrary notwithstandingThe Urem- n Cfifgn t is the title of a new publication recently commenced at Bremen, in this cuunty by If UM I a. Ma" mber. From the last number we learn that 815.000 have beon subscribed toward dc building of the railroad from Bremen to Plymouth, being one-third of the amount nccesary to be raiscu. and that the work of obtaining subscriptions of stoik is progressing very finely. VTe have sent out bills to our advertising patrons during the past week, and are grateful for the prompt responses we have met with. We m ed money just now, and desire to get our book:? straightened up, and settled up. We would also be pleased to square our subscription books, cspeeially with those who are from two to five years in arrears. Rome of the citizens of our town and county daily visit Chicago, and the question very naturally arises, ' Which is the best homsc to stop at?" From our xperience, we most heartily commend the Bmwt HorsE. The accommodations are first-claM, and no table in Chicago is more b niatifully supplied. The additional advantages of such a rlerk as Charley Hilton, settles the whole question, and we Tote, Brw.b llousi k Hilton. The KepmUicttm has adopted the plan of publishing the names of th"se for whom it does job work, together with the price paid. The young man who runs that machine felt eo elated because he was favored with a half-dozen small job in the space of ten days, that he could not refrain from publicly givim' Tent to hie feeling. When merchants publish the names of every man to whom they sell a yard of calico or hlarksmiths the name of every man fsr whom they set a horse-shoe, or grocery man the name of every customer to whom they sell a plug of tobacco, it will then not appear quite so silly for printers to publilsh the names of those for wh oüi they do work
The different churches are making preparations for lively times on Christmas. The children are waiting anxiously for th-jir annual cornucopeas.
A considerable ni mbcr of deer have been brought to this market during the past ten days. If the reader expects us to attempt a pun on the word ; deer," ho is very much mistaken, as we shall do nothing of the kind. An Entertainment. The famous troupe of the famous Billy Pastor will appear here, Tor the first time, next Saturday evening Of course, every bodv has heard of Billy Pastor, and of course every hoc y wants to see and hear him. He is himself an entertainment. There are several other stars in the company, and we anticipate a treat. The invariably dull commodity of wood took a sudden rise in the estimation of many of our people, during the recent stormy weather. The usually large number of persons who were out of wood when the bad weather and worse roads commened, seemed to have received heavy reinforcements on this occasion, judging from the crowd of anxious purchasers who surrounded every load which appeared upon the street. There should be some organized method adopted to relieve tho necessities cf the suffering poor of our town this winter. There are many families in Plymouth who will suffer for the necessaries of life, if assistanco is not rendered them. We have many benevolent citizens, who are ever willing to aid the needy; but it is asking too much to expect them to contribute all that will be needed. We think of no better plan than to get up a public entertainment BKIIUCa and dramatic, composed home talent, the proceeds tobodestributed to tho needy and deserving. We hope some energetic ladies and gentlemen will take hold of this matter, and get tho arrangements under way as oou as possible. Resolution of Respect. At a special meetiug of Bremen Lodge U. D. of P. ft A. M., held on the evening of Nov. 17th 1869, the following preamble and resolutions were adopted. Whereas, It has pleased Almighty (Jod to remove, by death, our beloved brother, Jacob Knoblock, calling him by His Omnipotent Will to that judgement which awaits us all. Whereas, The Masonic ties which have so long bound us in mutual friendship and enjoyment to our departed friend no more to be reunited until that great day when the graves shall give up their dead; therefore, Rooked That we sincerely mourn this disruption of covenanted friendship, bearing in remembrance his fidelity to the principles of Masonry. Rooittd, That wo earnestly sympawitb the relatives and friends of our deCeased brother, and tender them that consolation which the world can neither give nor take away. Rr solved. That a copy of this preamble and resolutions be forwarded to the family of our deceased brother, and inserted in the journals of Plymouth, SdUth Bend, and this place; and also, that a copy be fowardd to the office cf tho Masonic Home Advocate at Indianapolis for insertion. Resolved, That, in behalf of the friends of our deceased brother, we tender our thanks to tho officers of the Evangelical r-hurch for the use of their church building, to the BcT. N. Burkhart who conducted the religious services, and to the Bremen Comet Band for the sweet music furnished on the occasion. P. Eatax, ) Lewis Tiiiotiolt, I Christian Schilt, ) Com. Die Modcnxceh for December has been received, and is undoubtedly the beat illustrated fashion journal ever offered to the American ladies. The amount given for tho small prico charged is wonderful. This number alone contains 140 u-eful illustrations, mostly for cloaks; a highly colored steel engraving, and a largo supplement containing 19 full-sized patterns for lanies and children's cloaks, over-skirts, etc, Single copies, .).") cents. The daily increasing demands for this valuable semimonthly, commencing January, 1870, at the exceedingly low price of 15 cents per copy, or $3 per annum. Now is the time to subscribe and get up clubs. S. T. Taylor, Importer, 301 Canal street, New York. Current Affair. In the event of the death of Victor Emanuel, sevtn wives will be widows. What a fight there will be over old clothes. Forty-seven men who were drawn as jurors for one county of Georgia were excused from service on account of having young babies at home, and the court adjourned ' until baby season is over." The body-servant of Washington, having become comparatively extinct. the cook of Lafitte, the pirate, turns up in New Orleans, aged 118. Reticence has grown to be such a commanding virtuo that the Radicals propose nominating for the Presidency in 187 1 Dm Onondaga Stone Giant. A colored gentleman in Texas went into a blacksmith's shop with his cont tail pocket full of powder. When he came out he made a hole in the roof. Sierra Leone has a newspaper which advertises for an English compositor. The last one was broiled and euten by the chief editor, a healthy nativo of very advanced views upon the lltifnt 'f diet.
