The Finn of Novimblr. The fifth of November will be an eventful era fur the future history of the British army. With a just sense of intelligence and courage cf that grade of soldi rs which was once said to fight 'under the cold shade of aristocracy, " her Majesty has

railed on Lord Raelan to recommend one , . . . nia. i,:e sergeant from every rpgunent under hs comm!imi to be promoted to a cornetcy or ensigncy. When the recommendation has been confirmed, the commissions are Q dae frQm lhe 5th of NorPrabf r. In. ktances iiave been known of men fighting their way in the British army, up from the ranks to a commission, but never bef uch wholesale fashion. It is the kingly practice renewed, of creating knights upon the field of victory. This """ ai)a 10 vator even 01 Dtii ish soldiers, it will supply us with offi cers of sterner stuff than we have hitherto heen customed to; it will raise the emulation of the officers more favored ol fortune. The promotion of their brave mn Reform bill of the British Army it ill inevitably be followed by other equally important ameliorations, The effects of this step, not only on the r-ugnsn army out. on me r.uuSii pcop.c. are incalculable. It is the greatest victory for the popular cause, that can be won during the wr. London Expreat. A Ccntous Fact. Mr. Seeman, the naturalist of Kellett's Arctic expedition, states a curious fact respecting the cond.tiun of the vegetable world during the long diy of the Arctic summer. Altho the sun never sets while it last?, plants make no mistake about the time when, if it be not night, it ought to be ; but reg uldrly us the evening hours approach, and when a midnight sun is several degrees above the horizon, droop their leaves and sleep, even os they do at sun et in uiore favored climes. A man wos driven DetWfen iwllicaco ana uaitbn, Galena, With 811 CX team, in wh'ch was his Wife and two small childreu. At night At nipllt the storm came upon them wilh its snow, wind and cold. They could no: build a fire. Lecause the ground being covered with enow, there was no wood to be seen, and ther distance from any habitation prevented them from reaching a hospitable shelter. Before morning the wife was frozen stiff, and as a desperate expedient, to save the lives of his children, the man killed both his oxen, cut them open, took out the vicera, and Dlacedhis freezins children in the cavities. But their death was only delayed by this, as they fro-M dead also. If you've got anything to do, go and do it. There is nothing we hate so a bominably os a loafer; an idle drone, gwho has no business of bis own, but to go from stoie to taveru, and from office to office, lounging around on counters and chairs, dealing out 6candal and talking about the women. If you've anything to do, go and doit, find something; 'them's our sentiments.
