Apclooetic. The almost endless string of advertisements this week, has mompoliaed the greater part of our reading :oom, o the sacond P8gp. This work had to be dont. and our readers will certainly bear with us for two weeks more, when they will be set aside for our usual Tariety. Laboe Wheat. Air. Daniel Rhodes, living iu the vicinity of this place. It-ft at ear office a few days ago, some eight or ten of the largest wheat heads we evtl aoiiic of them measuring eight fetches in length. One of the largest produced 160 full and solid grains. We Ira rn I farmers who were at South Bend on Saturday last that good white Wheat was thn commanding 95c per bushel, and that from 6) to 90 cents was eflered for red. The Railroad to fttu. i lie prospect for the speedy completion of this northern portion of the road from Cincinnati to Chicago is of the most cheering charattar. The peopie along the line, between this place and Peru have taken hold ef the matter with a vigor and energy that is truly pruise-uorthy. In this place we understand, that 8130 000 of stock has been subscribed, ami that it will probably reach $200.000 in the county. No one acquainted with the country through which it is proposed to build this road, and the valuable connections it makes with other roads, doubts that it will b one of the best paying roads in the country Laport$ Whig. From the South Bend Register. Gold .Mi ucs in Iowa. We are under obligations to Senator Richardson fur the following letter. Read it but don't all start at once: Tehhb Coupee. Ixd, July 26ili IS53. Ed. Register: I am now in receipt of a letter dated July 6th. from Paul Egbert, now a resident of Clayton Co. Iowa. The following extract from the letter may be interesting to a portion of your readers. Reporter says that four or Gve mrn, 150 miles west of this, have been taking nut an ounce of Gold dust each, per day. for som? time past. That they have, discover! Gold, or something resembling it, there is n doubt; o'd California miners sir that it is genuine. The news has created great excitement and many are going to the mines. Four men went from near here. All remained but one. lie came bark for provisions, an I six more returned with hi in. The gold region U said to be extensive. Mr. Eberf s residence is 12 miles west of Prairie Du Chien, and 150 miles of that would place the placer on the head waters of the Des Moines, Skunk, and Iowa Rivers, all of them having their origin -bout the North line of the State, and near the half-way house to the Missouri. Other letters may have reached here since the one above referred to, which confirm the report. Whether personal examinations will pay for a trip to these new El Dorados. I am not abU to sy, but it would be ungenerous to withold information where the possession of it by our enterprising citizens would possibly lead to a fortune. At any rate, all should have a fair start. Very respectfully yours, A. P. RICHARDSON. Man aso Woman The following happy passdg is from the pen of Mrs. Sijjourney: Man might be initiated in the varieties Hnd myateries of needlework, taught to have patience with the feebleness and waywardness of infdcii -,nd to steal with noiseUss step around the chjmber of the sick; ai d woman might be instructed to eunteud for the palm of science; to pour forth el oqunce iu senates, or wade through fieids of slaughter to a throne. Yet. revolting to th soul would attend this violence tonature, tbisabuse to physical and intellectual energy; while the beauty of social order would be defaced. and the fouutain if earth's felicity be broken up. We arrive then at the conclusion that the sexes are intended for different spheres constructed in conform ity to their respective destinations, by Uim who bids the atk brave the fury of the tempest, and the Alpine Mower rest jts cheek upon the bosom of eternal snows. But disparity does not imply inferiority. The high placesof earth, with all their pomp and glory, are indeed accessible only to the inarch of ambition or the grasp of power; yet those who pass with faithful and unapplauded zeal through their humble round of duty, are not unnoticed by the "great taskmaster' eve. and their endowments, though ac e 'unted poverty, may prove durable rich e in the kingdom of Heaven.
