Are thesft improvements too I i:ii"!i to expect for nine years spent in ; s' hoot in the most s ucceptable time of a i child's life? We think i:ot, but on exnmintion of the yontli of our towns, me thinks few, few indeed hare thus improved. ! We. are much inclined to censure teachers for this great waste of time, money m i intellect; they miy be at fault, but 1101 "a-f so ni'ih s the system they la bor tin Ur. Take the best tercher that can be found, let him be three months in a school, itnd how much mora can he do than get the children's minds intereste 1. and school is out; another comes in, and his ways are different; he has to become acquainted, then to act in hii way on these same minds; the children start again, and school is out: so it goes, and so it went the whole nine years that your sons and daughters above mentioned were in school. Is it a wonder then, that they hare no valuable knowledge? Allowing it to be the teacher's fault; what object has been formerly placed before the mi nds of the youth to prepare for teaching. They were equally as well paid without qualifications as with, they indeed did not remain long enough in one school, for their qualifications to hecome known. And the consciousness thiit their slay wou'd b? very short, renders them necessarily less energet'C in all their efforts; however good a foundation they might lay, considering their time of service, it is soon to be exposed to unknown und perhaps unskillful hands. A Good Repartee. Some days since, one of the Indiana Senators, alluding to the meagre salary of the Governor of Rhode Island, remarked that, from the inadequacy of the compensation allowed that oificer he wts forced to raise cows, and peddle milk, or a living. Mr. Clarke, the Senator from that State, replied that Rhode Island milk was a profitable business, as they always there killed the calves and sold the milk. The grea t difference bitween this State aud some oth ers tiiat he could name, in this respect. was. that they raised their calves, and having nothing else to do with them, sent them to Congress. The Hon. John D. Weiler, of California, soon ufter obtained the floor, and thiuking that douhtless the Indiana Senator was not capable of taking cure of himself in a passage alarms with the Rhode Islander, very kindly came to his aid. He remarked that he did not wish to pro voke a reply, or he might be tempted to
show the Senator was mistaken in his statement that they hilled all tic calv: in lihodc hlcnd. ' Mr. Clarke rttorteJ. that he epvpt t!e-

The polici' of Perrysviile, Ashland county, have just discovered and f xposed a secret society among trie you ;h of that town, which is startling enough in its features the penalty a littli hurder than usual: The socity numbered a band of fifteen young men and boys, formed for the purpose of robbery. A ca plain was chosen and a regular Coastiution and Cy-laws the violation of which was death, were adopted. One of the band stole from his own father S10. which he had collected was opeud by two of the band, and a ten dollar bill isken from it. The one who changed the bill to divide with his comrade, charged a premium to inak change. This being a violation cf the By-Laws the test of the band unknown to him. held a meeting and determined on his death. It was arranged that all were to go out upon the ice in which a hole was to be previously cut to skate, and that all should appearstruck at some curio-iiy iu the water, ana all look in. and when this. i , 1 , . . .111 1 T. -..l l .. .n ... .. .. lllA 1 T A II A l of the company should strike him with a club und pitch him in. The Nantucket Islander says the following story was lately told by a reformed inebriate as an apology for much of the foil v of drunkards. w A mouse ranging about a brewery, happening to fall into a vat cf beer was in iminent tl-nger of drowning, and appealed to a cat to help him out. Thecal replied, "It is u foolish request, for as soon as I get you out I shall eat you. Tlie mouse piteously replied that that would be better than to he drowned ia beer. The cat lifted him out, but the fume of the beer caused puss to sneeze, and the mouse took refuge in a hole. The cat called upon the mouse to come out. "Did you not promise that I should eat you?" Ah!" replied the mouse, ! did, but tec! in Hv.or at tht ffrtf."
