STATU MI-: NT On information iriven to the A'cad. that public documents, or records, rtqui red by individuals to enable them to prosecute their claims, were in the pisse&siun of a person of the name of Sousa, he communicated the fa'-t, by petition, to the Governor. On this a commission was given in writing to Col Walton, to the Alcade, and to Col. Miller, th: dei K. of the county court tuthoiiampj them to wail on Sous?, and'iequest him to txhibi', and deliver to them, all !-uih public documents as wcie in liis possession, rt latin to prop-tty in the l'lotidas, which no individual had a right to retain, unci in case of his refusal, to report the fact to the Governor. When these gentlemen waited on S jusa, on the morning of the :Ut, he exhibited two open boxes, con u:nir. pipers, which he said belonged 10 the military department and to ihc re vcnufiti which were entrusted to him by tke Utc governor for safe keepirf. On examining the papers, those songht lor were found, together withthree other re cords of suits between individuals, invol vinfe the title to property 111 West l'lorida. A demand was then made of these papers, out refused by Sou-.a, on the ground thai he hid no controul over them; but he dcdared that he would immediately com" mumca-e the demand, which was made 10 him m w,mn, to the late governor. Walton S-.cratary of West ITonda, accompanied by the Alcade, to make a demand ol ihc papers, and in case of a refusal, to require Sousa to accompany them 10 ihc Governors office. They accor d'nfily -ent to his house, between Hand 12 o'clock, on tiiu 0.2 J, where they found Sousa, and made the Hmand ; wnetv he informed them that he had senl the papers to Col. Callava's. He was then brought btfore the Governor, and on be. ing interrogated, acknowledged that the patlicular papers leqciicd, had bien in his posse 111 ; that they related to property in this country ; that they wrre in certain boxes with other papers, which he had deli vet ed into the keeping of Col. Callava's steward, and lhat they wen then in Callava's house. A wiilten commission was then given to Col. Huiler and Dr. Bronaogh, accompanied by the Al caJe, to rrpair to the house of Col. Csl lava, to nuke a demand of him nt the sr papers and m case oT refusal, to requite Col Callava. and th: stewaid ta appear before the Governor. About five o'clock m the evening, they repaired to the house of Col. Calava. and found him surrounded by Spanish rlli.-ers in uniform, with their side arms, having j,,,t returned from a dinner party.
