A' Parody on "Old Grimes."
nr HORN KOB. OM Briiitlle's dead that pood old cow, iVe ne er slmll see her more ; She had a pair of lops behind, A pair oi' legs before. Oh! she was gentle as a dove, And knew no base design: She had two horns her head above, Like any other kine. Her beauty hid from public gaze, She never brought to mind, Nor made a noise on rainy days, ,' As other cattle do. In winter she was fed on hay. ''.. AVe cut the fodder fine: ' She give eight quarts of milk a daji On Sunday she give nine. ! ' i ' '. And just at sunset every night, I She came home without tail, . She never felt disposed to fight, And ne'er kicked over the pail. She sought her friends among other cows, With whom she won esteem; , And never kicked up any rows, But always gave good cream. Oh ! she was generous to a fault, Betrayed no idle fears ; She never refused her salt, She wore a pair of ears. And now she has gone to her long home, We mourn, and ever shall? For everybody said she was A fine old animal. A Quit-Claim Divorca. From the rapidly growing Nebraska Territory an intelligent correspondent writes to the drawer on this wise : "I have just received from a friend in Denver City the. following answer to a petition for a divorce, which is too good to be lost, : I therefore send it to you for exposure to the admiring giize of the funny world. "Last spring John Howard and his w ife, Mary E , left this city for the hind of golden promises, Pike's Peak. After arriving at Denver City, John left his lady ami went up into the mountains. Mary not liking, probably, to be left alone, and John rather liking lo be relieved of double blessedness, did not return. All of which with, perhaps, some other provocation was considered by the fair Mary as a just cause for a divorce. So she applied to the Chancery Court of Denver for a release from the bonds of matrimony with (lie said John'. Judge D , who presides over that august institution, ordered the publication of the petition to be made in the city papers, and also requiring the truant John to appear on a day named in the notice before the Honorable Court, and show cause, if any he had, why the said application for a divorce should not be granted. "John happened to see the paper containing the notice while ruralizing at Canon City, and at once set himself down to answer the petition, which lie thus did : '.'Mart E. 'Howard, " 'Answer of deft. . lo plff's. petition for a divorce, in Court vs. ' " 'John Howard. of Chancery, Denver City, Jefferson Territory. To the Plaintiff in the abort action. " 'Whereas, having been cited through the public press of Denver to appear before one Judge D , of the above elected Court, to show cause why your prayer lo be divorced from me should not be granted, I, the said defendant, take this opportunity to relieve you from all em- , barraSsmctit in the matter, by sending you. a quit-claim deed to all my right, title, and interest whatsoever in you, leaving a blank to be filled up by the name of the party by whom you may in future be claimed. Hoping you will fully appreciate my good feeling in the matter, I will proceed to give you the said promised quitclaim deed, as follows, to wit : "Know all men and one woman, by these presents, that I, John Howard, of Canon City, of Ike first part, do hereby grant, bargain, convey, and quit-claim all my right, title, and interest to the undivided whole of the ancient and unreal estate known as MaryE. Howard, the tide to which I acquired by occupation, possession, and use, situated at present in the town of Denver, J. T., together with all the improvements made by me thereon and therein, with all the use, rents, profits, and appurtentinces .therein anywise appertaining unto ; to B , of t he second part, to have and lo hold unto the said B , so long as he can keep her without recourse upon the indorser. '"In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this 24th day of January, A. D. 1861. ; ' .'":. ' "Signed John Howard, l. b. " 'Signed in presence of A. Kudd, Clerk of Canon Cily, District Civil Court, per Wilber V. Stone, Deputy.' "It is said that the answer and deed were satisfactory. " "In the town of T , not many miles from here, there was a shoemaker who at times officiated as preacher of the -. Univcrsali-t persuasion. He always wrote the notices himself, in order to save the expense of printing. Here is one of them : " 'There will be preaching in the pines opposite the United Stales Hotel this Sunday afternoon on the Subject 'All who do not believe will be damned at three o'clock.' " Proper Equipage, The Conneclicut troops are supplied by the state witli regular army w agons large and strong horses and harness fifteen to each regiment with ambulences also. This looks like work, as without these our army "annot move one foot into Virginia or elsewhere. Our Administration at Washington is so overwhelmed with affairs that they welcome troops so mpplied, and it would be timely for every State to tee that its regimenU are furnished with these and at once. The expense will of course be rcmilied by the general Government. Every officer for his own sake and that of bin men, ought to urge this provision, and no time should be lost, for they cannot be made in day. t3T The amount of gold iind silver in the New York banks, the "World" says, is more than three times the average antecedent lo the crisis of 1857. The large amounts now being distributed for Government purposes find their way back lo (he Atlantic cities in less than a fortnight. Even during the past week tl.OOO,000 hare been added lo the sum named in the last statement. This steady maintenance of a specie reserve of near 10,600,000, although indicattre of stagnation in trade, is now a reliance for the worst emergencies that may occur.
