kegs of gunpowder. It seems she cleared from will be made. This armory supplies r large this porl in December last, for New Orleans, portion of the rifles in use by the English volunand, in a gale of wind, lost her mast, and was ! teers, and also has large contracts with France obliged to put into St. Thomas in distress, where ' for rifles for the French troops. A large supply she was refitted as best she could be, the Captain of heavy guns is expected from the General Gov. -not having the mean to repair, and she returned j.ernment in a few days, or as soon as they can be
to this city. The peculiar circumstances of t e 1 got here, purchases ot 11 tics ana guns are in
ease led to the discovery of the nature cargo, and to its providential seizure. A Matrimonial Incident-
The Lnyfayetto Courier relates the following incident, in connection with the appointment of Lieut. John A. Stein, of Lafayette, to the position of Adjutant of the Brigade, under Gen. Morris. Lieut. Stein, at the announcement of tlio President's proclamation, was engaged to be married, and the nupitals were to be solemnized in the course of a few days. Conceiving that he owed a higher duty to his country than he did to his betrothed, he volunteered. On being npprised of
t lie lact she wrote to nun, giving her tree consent, archly remarking, however, that she could have
spared a husband, for such service, as cheerfully as a lover. ' The gallant Lieut, took the hint if hint was indeed meant to be conveyed and on Saturday last, asked a day's leave of absence. It was granted, and he left the camp for the home of his affianced, reached there at five in the afternoon was married at six o'clock, and took his departure for bis post at seven o'clock the same evening. Miy Heaven spare him for the fond arms so worthily! w on, to the end of the war. The Situation of Affairs, Intelligence from Washington last night to the effect lAiat the war will be vigorously opened in a few -days by demonstrations upon Alexandria and soifolk. A movement on Havre de Grace was also ordered to take place yesterday from Perry -ville. Three or four companies of Col. Dare's command will cross the Susquehanna, with a
battery of artillery, and occupy Havre de Grace. Troops will then be sent forward, ten miles, to Bush river. The last movement may not be made till Sunday. On Monday a strong force of carpenters and builders will be sent forward to Bush river with timber and tools, and the bridge there will be rebuilt. The bridges over Big and Little Gunpowder rivers will be rebuilt as soon as a sufficient military force is sent forward to protect the workmen. The bridges will be completed by Thursday next, and this road to Baltimore will then be open. Troops will be sent forward from Philadelphia to reinforce those at Perry ville. Maj. Anderson passed through Perryville yesterday, and proceeded to Annapolis, en rutile for Washington. At both places he was received with respect, and passed through the lines of troops with head uncovered.
Affairs remain quiet in Baltimore. Fort Madison, an earthwork fortification commanding the city and harbor, is in possession of government troops. The steamer Maryland landed a force of the Massachusetts troops from Annapolis, and large quantities of stores at Fort Mc Henry yesterday, and afterwards steamed up the city with the Stars and Stripes Hying. The intelligence from Richmond is important. Considerable alarm is said to exist there in consequence of the activity of the United States government, and the unexpected unity of the North in supporting the Constitution and the
nag dishonored at tort Sumter. It was believed in Richmond that Davis has just notified tlie governors of the Border States, now acting in
Hostility to tnc government, to assemble at Mont gomery, there to confer with the rebel govern
ment on the momentous issues before them. The conservative ponion of the people in Richmond
are in lavor oi an armistice, in order that some
peaceful settlement of the difficulties may be ar
rived at, and several leading men from Virginia,
Maryland, Kentucky and Tennessee, it is said, are actively exertinir themselves to bring it about,
The Virginia Legislature adjourned on 1st inst.,
until the 12ih of June, by which time it was
expected that t lie returns of the popular vote
on the ordinance ot secession would be received
The government, meantime, is authorized to call
the Legislature together at any lime during the recess. It has been decided by the War Department tliat no more troops, except volunteer regiments, are lo be concentrated at Washington for the present. X. Y. Herald, May 4. ,
of her i progress at several other points
' from these tacts it win be seen that Indiana will soon be in a condition to take excellent care of herself, and of any force that may venture to
! cross her border with a hostile purpose. Jour
nal, May 7.
Purchasing Provisions. The Washington correspondent of the N. Y. Times, writing on Sunday, says.
Within the past week upward of seven hundred thousand dollars' worth of provisions have been purchased by the Government in the city of New York alone. This is intended for the supply of the blockading fleet, and is being rapidly forwarded to Pensacola, Tortugas, and other available points. At Pensacola there are ample supplies already for a six months' campaign. Five hundred beef cattle are contracted for, to be delivered in Washington before the close of the present week. The War Department is also making large purchases of camp cloth, equipage, Arc, most of that which it had on hand having been stolen by Floyd & Co.
Appointments. Capt. Milo S. Ilascall has been appointed Aid-de-Camp to Brigadier-General Morris, and Lieut. Stien acting assistant Adjutant General. J D. C. Greenfield has the appointment of Quartermaster Sergeant for the 11th regiment, nn office combining, in a measure, the duties of Quartermaster and Commissary.

A Breathing Spell. The Administration has found time to remove 28 Democratic Postmas
ters in Oneida county, and appoint an equal number of Republicans to the vacancies. The
President has no objection to the enlistment of these decapitated officials in the service of the army, as there is but one party now-a-days. Mr. Lincoln is evidently of the opinion that all the Democrats are good for is to light. Buffalo (X. Y.) Courier. gS One of the most important changes in the regulations of the army and navy of the United States, is now being effected. The signal books
must, it is thought, be destroyed; and new ones made out. Southern officers, who have been in the Federal service, may have kept some signal books, and many know the chief signals at a
glance. Indeed rumor has it that it was Com
modore 'Cunningham, late Commander-in-chief
of our Mediterranean squailon, who prevented (be supplies from reaching Major Anderson, by
interpreting his signals to the licet.

Indiana and her Preparations, As usual little is said outside of our State limits of what is going on inside, and probably fourfifths of the people of the country don't know whether Indiana has filled her requisition for troops or not. We desire succinctly to state what Indiana lias done in the way of warlike preparations. First. The six regiments demanded by the Federal Government was raised and mustered into service, and ready to march, in a week after the call was made. They are now in camp, drilling daily, and living the regular soldier lite. But up to this time, though the guns have come, the accoutrements are still behind. About300,OO0 cartridges have been received, and are ready for use. The lacking accoutrements will probably be here this week. One regiment, the 1 1th,
will be temporarily equipped with State arms and
accoutrements till the arrival of those belonrin!
to them, and in the meanwhile may be started for their destination in a day or two. Second. The Legislature has authorized the raising and arming of six regiments for one year for home service, to be transferred in the Government service in the discretion of the Governor. They will be armed by Stale arms, unless required by the General Government. More than twice as many companies as will make these six regiments have been tendered to the Governor, and over half are now here and in camp. Third. The requisition for several, probably six, regiments for three years service, will be filled in twenty-four hours after the order comes. The whole number nearly has already been tendered the Governor in anticipation of the call. ! Fourth Besides these 18 regiments raised by I
omcial requisition, there are probably 30 regiments organized in "Home Guards," with one name or another, who are perfecting their organizations and drilling every day. They will bold themselves in readiness in most cases subject to the call of the Government, and will be armed as fast as the arms can be procured. We shall not fall short of the truth if we slate that Indiana has now organized and ready, except in arms, 40.000 men. Fifth. The Governor has contracted with a Cincinnati foundary for 8 brass six-pounders and 4 twelve-pound howitzers for the field use. He has nho purchased at Montreal, of the agent of the celebrated armory at Liege, Belgium, 1,000 rifles of the best quality which are to be deliver
ed in 5 weeks. If not delivered in that time.
There is one labor of equal importance with the carrying on of the war, which ought not to be lost sight of in the rush so general to arms, in the West. The culture of tbe land must not be neglected must not be diminished, but ought
to be increased, as the increase for consumption will be great for all breadstuff's and provisions. We hear of some parties leaving their farms altogether to take part in the war. A short harvest will be a much direr calamity than war; and to insure a good harvest, the labor on the
farm must not be suspended, and the breadth of cultivation should rather be increased than otherwise. Prices are very remunerative at present for grain, and an increased cultivation would be the natural consequences of good prices. But this may be interfered with by a supposed paramount necessity to fight. The great body of farmers are thegreatcommissiaratof thcarmy and people. Good and extended cultivation will produce the hay and corn the food for cattle and swine, which are in turn the food for man, on which and on the cereals we have to depend to
carry on warlike and peaceful pursuits alike.
1 he men engaged in the hard task ot raising food
are, therefore, as well employed as those filling
the ranks. Trade and commerce and manufac
tures can spare their hundreds and thousands of
men for lighting for all these branches of Indus try are rendered dull: but agriculture can hard
ly spare a man.

How to Guahd Against the IIkat. As the heal of a Southern sun is one of the hardships our boys will have to encounter, permit an old soldier to state in what way the French army in Algiers guard themselves during the day when on the march or standing sentry : Take a yard of thin while flttnel, fold it together once and sew up one end, a ribbon or tape may be inserted to
draw and tie it around the neck. This thrown over the cap or shako, and falling behind, completely shields the head and shoulders from the
rays of the sun. Woolen is preferable to linen
orcottun, is equally light, costs less than the former, and is easier washed and kept clean, Wilson's Zouavea.
