A. 0. Stanley Of Kentucky Asserts Boy With Brains Should Not Be Taken From Farm.
LAFAYETTE UNION STOCK YARDS, LaFayette, Ind.
O. MASON, Salesman.
“American farmers are the worst farmers on the face of the earth,” was the assertion of former Representative A, O. Stanley of Henderson, Ky., in his address on “The Importance of Better Agriculture” before the Tristate Farmer’s Institute in Evansville Saturday. To prove his assertion the speaker pointed to the intensive farming of Europe, whicli results in big yields hundreds df years after the soil is put under cultivation, and then called attention to what ho termed poor crops and poor fields in the United States because the American farmer has not learned to take advantage of every bit of fertilizer the farm produces. Mr. Stanley termed a “fool trick” the system that takes “the boy who shows any signs of brains” from the farm and gives him a profession. He took a shot at eugenics and sex hygiene by asserting that a woman who has never had children of her own has a right to tell fathers and mothers how to rear their children. He made a plea for a more attractive life on the farm to keep the young people contented.

A little son of Lou Watkins of Rensselaer died last week and at the time his attending physician attributed the cause to alcoholic poisoning. After death an autopsy was held and the Dr’s, former diagnosis was fully confirmed. How much liquor the child drank could not be ascertained, but it is understood that the father permitted the use of tt, and that the little one passed the bottle around on a convivial occasion the Sunday before. Full soon the shadetrees will be green, the icebergs will be gone; and we shall push the old machine across the whiskered lawn. The furnace, in whose maw we’ve burned a thousand tons of slate, will have the rest it’s surely earntill Summer pulls its freight. The day grows long and short the night, and man may save his roll, nor cough up for electric light what didn’t go for coal. We’ll leave the shovel in the bin, among the dust and slate, and in the garden we’ll begin to labor soon —and late. We’ll plant the locust and the larch, in which the birds will sing, and bless the blooming blasts of March, which usher in the Spring. The trees which bear the lucious fruits, we’ll guard from pests and snares, and gladly plant our ginseng roots and groom our Belgian hares. Ah, life is life, when Spring arrives! To stir the scented soil we work our daughters and our wives, and boss them as they toil. ‘Tis grateful to the soul, indeed, it sooths the nerves that ache, to watch the women sow the seed, and ply the hoe and rake. It cheers the heart of any man to sit around and smoke, while Julia Jane and Mary Ann plant spud and artichoke. —Walt Mason.

The proportion of population to number of states is cut down by Arizona, Colorado, Maine, North Dakota ana Oregon, the combined population of which is hardly equal to that of the comparatively small state of Massachusetts. Of the other eleven states, eight of them contain over six million negroes, from which race the whites, politically in control, are most eager to keep liquor. The temperance society of the Methodist church, with headquarters at Topeka, Kansas, announces that during the coming year wet and dry votes will be taken in the following states: Idaho, Iowa, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, South Carolina and Vermont.

When the advance agent of a certain theatrical combination entered a hotel at Albany N. Y., some few days ago, and wanted to engage two doable rooms with bath, the clerk of the place was all O. K. until he asked how many people were in the party. The young man stated that there were twelve men who would occupy the one room, and six women who would take the other—and then the clerk raised a howl. He said the hotel would not rent a room to twelve men or even to six women! But when the agent informed him that he was the head man and advance agent of a Lilliputian show, and that of the whole 18 members of bis troupe there was no man nor woman with a weight of to exceed 85 pounds, the clerk sighed in disconsolate manner, handed the pen to the young man and stood for the proposition—which, strange to relate, proved to be the truth.

Every farmer who owns his farm ought to have printed stationery with his name and the name of his farm and his postoffice address properly given. Printed stationery gives one standing with whatever person or firm he is writing to, besides insuring that your name and address will always be read properly. Moreover, printed stationery increases your credit. Aunt Mary is the best old soul you’ll meet in many a day. She’s tended to her knitting in tbe good old-fash ionkd way. She never gabs nor gossips, she has no time to gad and she seldom reads the papers, ‘cause, she says they make her sad. She drove to town this afternoon to shop around a bit and Wilbur Jones the grocery man invited her to sit. Says he “Aint this war awful?” and Aunt Mary says “My Land! Aint heard a word about it, I aint even heard no band.” And Jones says “Sure, old England and France and Russia, too, are fighting with the Kaiser,—why, it’s worse than ‘62.” Aunt Mary answered sweetly as she started on her way, “Well they’ve got nice weather for it, ’cause it’s jest a lovely day!”—Ed.
