Gay Life in the City. It’s about time to put kibosh on all this talk about keeping the boys on the farm. Why should a boy or young man want to stay on a farm when he can go to the city, and, after tramping through tbe

It affects the Union Stock Yards of Chicago, greatest cattle market of tbe world, to the extent that no live cattle may be shipped from there during the duration of - the quarantine, even to another affected area. The official interpretation of the order says cattle from areas other than those under quarantine may be shipped to the Chicago yard but they may leave there only as dressed meat.

heat, or cold, or rain, or snow for five .or six weeks, land a fine, fat, easy, soft snap of ajubas a motorman? Then all he will have to do will be to get up at about 5 a. m. winter and summer, swallow a boarding house breakfast that a hog on his father’s farm would spurn, dash merrily to tbe car barn, take the abuse of a slavedriving car-starter, and go gaily to work. Ah, what pleasure to stand all day in a vestibule that is perfumed with the smells of the unwashed bodies of just-over immigrant laborers, on their way to
work in a sewer! Think of the fragrance of all grades of tobacco in cigarettes, in cigars and in pipes of many degrees of strength! It is simply great to breathe this spicy air all day. In the meanwhile one hears the sweet compliments of the ladies and gentlemen who do not happen to think of signaling to get off, but who rightfully feel that the motorman should have known, if he was not such a fat-headed lob, and do not hesitate to tell him so. Oh yes, its great. Every farmer boy ought to leave home at once and dash to
the city. Think of the wages he’ll get! Why, at the end of a month after paying for board, room, laundry, clothes and uniform, union dues and assessments, he’ll have almost enough left to go to a movie show. But, he probably won’t go, becaiise he’ll be so all-in and so full of the poisonous reek that he inhaled all day, that he will tumble into bed to forget it until the alarm clock calls him to begin all over again.

Federal Explanation.
After a day of conferences among officials at Washington and exchanges with field agents throughout the affected area, this explanation of the government’s action was issued at the department of agriculture:
“The quarantine of live stock on account of outbreaks of the foot and mouth disease lias been extended to cover the entire area of the states of Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and Pennsylvania. In addition restrictions have been placed upon shipments of stock from Ohio. The order extending this quarantine as signed by the secretary of agriculture November 2, and goes into effect immediately.
“The provisions of this quarantine are practically the same as those previously announced for a few counties in Michigan and Indiana. No cattle, sheep or swine can be shipped from these states in interstate commerce and all fodder and animal products of every sort which might possibly convey the disease must be thoroughly disinfected. “The quarantine states are not only prohibited from shipping cattle to uninfected areas, but they cannot even send shipments of stock from one infected area to another.

That there will be no change in the present officers of the Clover leaf railroad under the receivership, was the word brought from Toledo by Superintendent O. L. Hinkle of Frankfort, who held a consultation there with W. L. Ross, the receiver. The receiver stated that he proposed to make a number of improvements during the year and the business of the company will be carried on according to* the same principles heretofore followed, in most respects. Arrangements have been made to take care of outstanding obligations and creditors should have no fear that their accounts will not be met.
