Special Bargains for Saturday

Au opinion which affects the farmers of this state materially was handed down by state examiner of state board of accounts Gilbert H. flendreu Wednesday. Hendren says that the law relating to the cutting of weeds along highways is not binding, but was made for the purpose of allowing the countryman to receive pay if he did cut the weeds. The law grants $1.25 a day for such labor. The letter in which the opinion is given follows:

“In response to your inquiry of this day, will say that Section 7807, Burns’ R. S. provides that landowners shall out all briars, thistles, burrs, docks and other noxious weeds growing along highways, running along or through their lands, within the period beginning July 1 and ending August 20 each year. This law was enacted in 1897. The act is broad and it does not seem to have been modified or repealed by subsequent enactments. “Section 2 of the act provides that when the land owner shall have destroyed the weeds in the highway adjacent to his land, under the direction of the road supervisor of his district, he shall be entitled to credit on his road taxes at the rate of $1.25 a day for the time occupied in doing the work. “By Section 3 of the act, if the land owner neglects or refuses to do this work, the supervisor may secure any resident property owner of the road district to do such work, and give him like credit therefor on his road taxes.

oughly natural is it for us on H e mention of Kentucky to conjure up a mental picture of myriads of tall distillery stacks belching forth smoke 24 hours a day »n.d thousands of gentlemen with slouch hats and long droop*ng mustaches spurring their horses over the hills and waving bottles of the native corn juice above their heads while they whoop de. liriouslv,, that it is difficult to realize that 100 of Kentucky’s 120 counties are already dry, while local option elections called-for 14 of the remaining 20 will still further reduce the wet territory of that state. It is declared that the tempt ranee element of Kentucky, determined to rid forever the state of its whisky reputation, is determined by a resort to it statewide vole to eliminate the few remaining strongholds of liquor that cannot bo reached by county option and it appears altogether probable that it possesses plenty of strength to put the plan through successfully. The spectacle thus afforded is a highly interesting one and it is also one that is deeply significant.

“No penally is provided for failure to do the work by the land owner, and the supervisor is not authorized to ,warn out’ the land owner to do such work. It seems to be optional with the land owner ns to whether he will do the work and get credit therefor. “While the highway superintendent is required by Section 7757, Burns R. S., to ‘keep all side ditches open so that the road will be properly drained,’ and to keep ‘grass’ out of the roadbed, he is not authorized to ‘warn out’ order or direct the laud owner to cut or destroy weeds in the highway.

Maud Muller To Date.

15 c

Maude Muller, on n summer’s day, raked the meadows sweet with hay. And as she raked, in the early morn, site heard the honk of a Chixon horn. Anon there drifted on the scene a oar, propelled . by g soliue. The Judge rode up in his motor car and S lid to Maude: “ah, there you are!’’ lie killed his engine in the shade of the apple jrees, to chin the maid. H < spok.- of the mileage on his tires, ns is the way of all good liars. He said his car was quite lie best and had the edge on all the rest. He invited Maude to take a a rifle and, nothing loth, she jumped inside. The Judge from a purling brooklet drank, and forthwith started in to crank. He cranked and cranked till his arm was sore, then started in and cranked some more. He cranked and cranked and cranked till he reeked with sweat, and cranked till after the sun had set. He cranked away with a right good will and chances .ire, he is cranking still. And of all devices with which we’re cursed, the auto crank is about the worst.

Surprising Cure of Stomach Trouble.

Toilet Soaps

When you have trouble with your stomach or chronic constipation, don’t imagine that your case is beyond help just because your doctor fails to give you relief. Mrs. G. Stengle, Plainfield. N. J , writes, “For over a month past I have had trouble with my stomach. Everything I ate upset it terribly. One of Chamberlain’s advertising booklets came to me. After reading a few of the letters from people who had been cured by Chamberlain’s Tablets, I decided to try them. I have taken nearly three-fourths of a package of them and can now eat almost everything that I want,” For sale by all dealers. Adv.

Kentucky Going Dry.
