eet and retiring little person, Miss Jarvis pleaded her cause so eloquently with leading clergymen, financiers and public schools that on May 10, 1910, Mother’s Day was celebrated, not only in Philadelphia, her home city, but also in many other places throughout the union. Special commemorative services were held in the Philadelphia churches, and Miss Jarvis personally arranged for the conveyance of the old and infirm to and from the houses of worship. Besides devoting much time to correspondence, Miss Jarvis has made several trips abroad, spreading the observance of Mother’s Day in Europe.

sembly hall last Thursday evening and was well attended. Though lacking sufficient practice to make this clever little high school class play the success that all had hoped for it, due largely because of several substitute players taking the places of those regular players who for sickness and other reasons could not go on with the practice, even the untrained performers did their utmost, and the dabs play of the “class of 1913” proved a very good success.

A new old-fashioned commencement was seen Friday evening at the assembly hall when the class of 1913 of the New Richmond high school were given their diplomas as having finished the course of the local school. A departure was made from the usual rule of some speaker of note being present to deliver a class address in entertainment of the usual commencement audience, the members of the class instead each giving a short address of their own composition, each having chosen some subject touching upon their school work of the past four years. Likewise the class members gave their own musical selections, several members of the class being members also of the high school orchestra which rendered some splendid music for the occasion. The program of the commencement exercises was as follows:—
That New Richmond is soon to be lighted by electricity is assuming an air of certainty, and the most zealous promoters of the new project are leaving nothing undone to push the matter. A corporation is being formed to finance the proposition, the plan is to bring the current to New Richmond from the Crawfordsville plant, to be distributed to street lights, business houses and homes at a fixed nominal rate. An election will be called soon to ascertain the voice of our people,as to whether or not the town shall be bonded that will guarantee well lighted streets, and to further the matter of financing the proposition that will make it possible to furnish ns light and power.
The receipts amounted to a nice little sum, and this together with the commencement receipts and some donations of friends of the school have made it possible to cancel the debt against the school piano.

It is understood that Linden is right in line for the new light, that Wingate too is in a more receptive mood than heretofore, and it is expected that the four towns of Linden, New Richmond, Wingate and Waynetown will soon be connected in one solid chain which will mean a strong organization that will guarantee to their people the best service possible in electric light and power. Petitions were circulated and freely signed Tuesday by the residents of New Richmond who are anxiously waiting the coming of the electric current, thus expressing a united effort in behalf of one of the greatest conveniences now in easy reach of our people.
The couuty commissioners have decided to build a suspension bridge just south of the Main street bridge to replace the ferry and plans are being prepared by the LaFayette Engineering company. The commissioners met in regular session Monday and the plans for the suspension bridge will be presented at the session this week. The suspension bridge will cost less than $10,000 and the ferry costs the county $80 a day. As it will probably be two years before a new bridge will replace the Main street bridge, the erection and use of an extension bridge will be a saving to the county. The ferry cannot he used when the river is frozen or when the ice is floating down stream in the spring, and a suspension bridge can be completed before cold weather next fall. The suspension bridge will be used exclusively for foot passengers and the Brown street bridge will take care of vehicles. With a suspension bridge in use the commissioners feel that everything that is possible has been done to restore the communication that was destroyed by the recent flood. Work on the suspension bridge will be started within thirty days.—LaFayette Morning Journal.
So we want you up in glory. For you have labored hard. And the good Lord is preparing Your eternal, just reward.”

The class of 1913, though not as large as other classes of the past, have graduated with splendid credits, and their hosts of friends congratulate them upon reaching this auspicious occasion, and their teachers for their ceaseless care in rightly directing their school work. Annual Fashion Event
The New T Richmond baseball club went to Stockwell Sunday afternoon and defeated the strong Stockwell team by the score of 11 to 5 in a well played game. The team work and batting of the home boys has been greatly improved and considering the rough condition of the Stockwell diamond each man on the team done good work. This is the first defeat that Stockwell has ever received at the hands of New Richmond, as always heretofore they have been able to take home the bacon. Miller pitched for the home boys, while Stockwell used three different pitchers in their endeavor to win. The Stockwell team plays the home team on Alexander’s field next Sunday, May 11, and a good game may be expected as Stockwell will try hard to even up for the loss of Sunday. Score by innings:

car coming in the opposite direction crashed into Mr. Alexander’s car, smashing the fender and slightly damaging a front wheel and axle. Mr. Alexander had gone a foot too near the short curve and stopped, not realizing the extra amount of space necessary for the swing of the traction car in making the turn. However, Mr. Alexander, after taking his machine to a garage and looking over the damage, drove his machine out home later in the evening. The accident happened at about 5 o’clock Sunday evening, and in a few seconds after the crash people crowded about the car and its occupants to learn the results of the collision.
Each of the graduating class addresses was well given, and showed much careful study in preparation, besides portraying the especial interest which each graduate exhibited in his chosen subject as one of which he had well mastered in his school work. Our people as a whole will, no doubt, be pleased to depart from the rule of a paid class speaker as of recent years, to go back to the original way of the graduating class giving its own commencement exercises.

Tho second Sunday in May, “Mother’s Day,” will be celebrated for thd fourth timje, and the white carnation symbolizing the purity of mother love, will be worn by thousands in the United States and Great Britain. Six years ago, while Miss Anna Jarvis was commemorating the death of her own mother on the sebond Sunday in May, it occurred to her that the day, falling as it does in a season of blue sky and blossoms, might well be set aside as an annual festival upon which due tribute of affection and remembrance should be rendered to all mothers.
