money coming to them far beyond their wants. There are men who have millions and who continue to pursue money-making only to collect more millions for hoarding. This is, as I have said, a very different thing from thrift and the making of a modest competence. The accumulation of millions of dollars is usually the result of enterprise and judgement, and some exceptional ability for organization. It does not come from savings in the ordinary sense of that word. Men who in old age strive only to increase their already too groat hoards are usually slaves of the habit of hoarding formed in their youth. At first they own the money they have made and saved. Later in life the money owns them and they cannot help themselves, so overpowering is the force of habit, either for good or evil.

A prize of $50 was offered by the republicans for the best drilled company of rough riders on Roosevelt day. There were many splendid exhibitions made by the several companies, but it was finally decided that Jackson township should have the prize and it was on Tuesday awarded to them. Much credit is due to the officers of this organization for the hard work put forth in organizing and drilling the horseback riders. The officers are: F. L. Duncan, captain; Chas. DeVore, first lieutenant; George Brown, second lieutenant.—LaFayette Home Journal.

The woman who is lovely in face, form and temper will always have friends, but one who would be attractive must keep her heallth. If she is weak, sickly and all run down, she will be nervous and irritable. If she has constipation or kidney trouble, her impure blood will cause pimples, blotches, skin eruptions and a wretched complexion. It is the abuse of the civilized saving instinct, and not its use, that produces this class of men. No one need be afraid of falling a victim to this abuse of the habit, if he always bears in mind that whatever surplus wealth may come to him is to be regarded as a sacred trust, which he is bound to administer for the good of his fellows. If the man resolves and faithfully adheres to his resolution never to hoard money, but to put each year’s surplus to uses beneficial to others, then the money-making habit may still be classed among the virtues. The man must always be master. He should keep money in the position of a. useful servant; he must never let it bo master and make a miser of him. Burns expresses a truth when he declares that the savings, are precious because they make men independent. As he was a very poor man himself, to be independent of others naturally seemed to him the great aim of life; but great wealth is even more desirable, since it permits one to be of service to others. Andrew Carnegie in The Youth’s Companion.

There is said to be, a plan on foot whereby Carroll, White and Tippecanoe counties are to unite in the erection of a parental home for incorrigible children. The truancy law, it is claimed, is a failure, and other means must be adopted, it is argued, to educate the truant youth.

The readers of this paper will be pleased to learn that there is at least one dreaded disease that science has been able to cure in all its stages, and that is Catarrh. Hall's Catarrh Cure is the only positive cure known to the medical fraternity. Catarrh being a constitutional disease, requires a constitutional treatment. Hall’s Catarrh Cure is taken internally, acting directly upon the blood and mucous surfaces of the system, thereby destroying the foundation of the disease, and giving the patient strength by building up the constitution and assisting nature in doing its work. The proprietors have so much faith in its curative powers, that they offer One Hundred Dollars for any case that it fails to cure. Send for list of testimonials.

It is suprising how little it takes to provide for the real necessaries of life. A little home paid for, and a few thousand dollars—a very few
— make all the difference. These are more easily acquired by frugal people than you might suppose. Great wealth is quite another and a far less desirable matter. It is not the aim of thrift, or the duty of man, to acquire millions. It is in no respect a virtue to set this before us as an end. Duty to save ends when just enough money has been put aside to provide comfortably foy those dependent upon us. Hoarding millions is avarice, not thrift.

The directors of the Crawfordsville match factory are much pleased with their work so far, although the force is not up to the required numbers. There are now 63 girls employed there, the experienced ones being able to make from $1 to $1.25 a day. It is thought that in two weeks there will be 100 girls employed there and 50 men. A new packing room is being built and the directors feel that when things are in first class working order they can almost double the force and push things to the front. Orders now pour in faster than they can be filled and the intricacies of the business are being rapidly mastered.—Journal, In the various Indiana poor asylums there are 3,000 inmates according to a table of statistics recently completed by the State statistician. Ol this number 1,987 are males and 1,013 are females. The number dying within the year is 393. Of the inmates 127 are blind, 67 deaf and dumb, 404 idiotic and feeble minded, 446 deformed or cripplid, and 963 infirm and feeble.
