An exchange tells of the three stingiest men on record. The first will not drink water enough unless it comes from a neighbor’s well. The second forbids his children writing anything but a small hand, as it wastes ink to make large letters. The third stops the clock at night to save the wear and tear on the machinery. They all refuse to take a newspaper on the grounds that it is too much of a strain on the spectacles to read.

An election bet has been made here that is certainly worthy of note. And the best part of it is nobody loses. A Fountain county young man has been paying particular attention to a well-known New Richmond young lady and the agreement has been reached between them that in the event that Bryan and Stevenson are elected she consents to become his wife. If McKinley and Roosevelt win he is to then marry her. The stakes have been placed in responsible hands of one who has agreed to keep mum. Love Certainly finds a way.

The Sunday Star makes the statement that both political parties in Montgomery county are well supplied with the “long green” with which to purchase the floating vote of the county. It states that each party has a visible supply of $5,000 and “there’s plenty more where that came from.” Votes are at a premium and on election day will command from $2 to $10 according to the standing of the seller. It may not be generally known, perhaps, that on the poll books of the parties in this county are nearly 1,000 voters marked “salable.”
