acres which he long had had his eyes upon, running into debt for nearly all the purchase price of it. | His good wife cried, and we don't blame her; the boys got mad and swore they would leave the farm the first chance they had. There is a lot of this sort of fool business going on. Men don’t know when they are well off. What a farce life becomes when a man will deliberately make a slave of himself and mere drudges of his wife and children all in order that when the estate is administered upon by the probate court he may be able to show up $50,000 instead of $20,000. No man who wishes to enjoy life should want more than 160 acres of good land.—Kingman Star.

In the time of Queen Elizabeth a tax was placed on men’s beards. In the first year of her reign a tax was imposed of about 85 cents on every beard above a fortnight’s groth. The law, however was never enforced, and so it lapsed. In France a tax on beards was imposed and enforced, and it is said that from it a handsome revenue was derived. Peter, the Great, of Russia also imposed a tax upon beards; a copeck to be paid by peasants and laborers and 100 rubles by those of higher station in life. So strongly was this Russian anti-beard law resented that in more than one case it led to the spilling of blood. Officers were stationed at the city gates with swords, and if any beard wearer refused to pay the tax he was at once submitted to the ordeal of a gratuitous shaving.

In speaking of Capt. Allen in the Philippines Sam Dean says: “The Captain has spent the last eight months on the island, working with and imploring these people to come in and behave themselves, so consequently has had the opportunity of seeing the true situation of affairs here. So far as a commander, there is none better in my opinion. He has marched at the head of the column in all of our expeditions except the 15th of March, and then Lieut. Morris was in command, who is a very able and capable commander. He is very industrious and energetic in regard to the safety and good health of the men, imploring them to be temperate in their habits, as he thinks it is best for their physical condition.

Dame Rumor states for the benefit of those who believe in the fatality of the number 13 that the American quarter dollar is about the most unlucky object they can carry. On said coin there are 13 stars, 13 letters in the scroll which the eagle holds in his claws, 13 feathers are in his tail, there are 13 parallel lines on the shield, 13 horizontal stripes, 13 arrowheads and 13 letters in the word “quarter dollar.”

One of these days there will be legislation making it misdemeanor to exhibit freaks such as some are exhibited at the public fairs and museums of the cities. There were shown at at the recent Indianapolis street fair and in this city last week two black children that ought to have been confined in an idiot asylum. As it was two or three besotted men lived off the money wrung from a curiosity seeking community ever on the scent of something horrible or grotesque. Away out in California, a state a full quarter century farther from civilization, it is a penal offense to exhibit in public a monstrosity of any kind and the same sort of a law should be engrafted on the statute book of Indiana.—Crawfordsville Sunday Star.

The Crawfordsville city council has passed a scale ordinance. It provides that it shall be unlawful for anybody to have scales for the weighing of coal, grain, or any farm product, without the same having been inspected and a license fee paid. The fee for scales on the street shall bo $25 per year and off the street $10 per year, and provides that an inspector shall be appointed who shall receive $1 for each pair of scales inspected. It was shown that the same wagon load weighed on four different scales in the city varied from 4,707 to 4,500 pounds. The ordinance was certainly needed.

Elder Crim's decision will be regretted by his many friends here ns he is an able and forcible speaker and has done good work here.
