Kicking the extra point

How many times have you seen it? After fifty-nine minutes and fifty-eight seconds of hard-nosed bare-knuckle football the kicker in his dean uniform trots onto the field. Then,

while the crowd holds its collective breath, steps forward, kicks through the ball - and misses! Nobody wants to be that kicker! But that's what I face as an actor in the current production of "Annie" at the Round Bam Theatre at Amish Acres. I'm the kicker. Everyone else has been giving their all for two hours, and suddenly it's my turn. I'm not sure I can "win" the musical, but I sure can lose it! Let me explain. I've been an actor since 1972. Before that I was too shy to speak in public. When I went to college my first semester my academic counselor (who was also the volleyball coach) signed me up for a Theater course she said would fulfill my humanities requirement. She assured me this was strictly a book course, no acting involved, but 1 had to take it. She was wrong. It wasn't a required course. And one of the requirements of the course was that I had to act in a play. It was terrifying. I was awful, I suspect. But I was hooked. Since then I've acted innumerable times in college, church, and community theater. I've written plays, directed shows, and produced performances. So around a month ago I got this call from a friend of mine at the Round Bam Theatre. Would I be interested in playing the role of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the upcoming Holiday production of "Annie!"? Uh, yes. Now here's the thing. "Annie" is a great musical. It's about that little orphan living during the Great Depression who wants to

Reese Ames, and there's a cadre of very talented young women who play the rest of the orphans. Along with them are these talented professionals (including Sarajane Morse Mullins who played Annie at the Round Bam back in 19% who has gone on to an illustrious professional career). These people are working real hard, singing and dancing and acting and moving the set pieces here and there, and by the time I enter they've pretty much won the hearts of the audience and brightened the holidays of hundreds of folks each show. Then I walk out. Actually since I'm FDR I get wheeled out. And while my small, relatively unimportant part would never make the show, it could certainly break it for everyone if I mess up. So, like everyone else in the cast, I give my best effort every single night, because with a team this strong I don't want to be the guy with the unpronounceable name who shanks the ball and sends it skidding wide right of the goal posts. So you might well ask, with all this pressure why did I say yes? Because actors are the nicest, quirkiest, most interesting, most fun people you'll know. They're hard workers dedicated to bringing the words on a page to life. Actors are also really nice people because if they were hard to work with they wouldn't be getting any work. That's probably the biggest reason I said yes to playing a part in Annie. I like being with actors. And so far it's been a hoot! -Frank Ramirez is the Senior Pastor of the Union Center Church of the Brethren.
