Panthers roH over Wawasee to remain unbeaten

By Steve Sittler Correspondent SYRACUSE - Three different players scored a pair of touchdowns and the Class 4A #2-ranked North Wood Panthers rolled up more than 500 yards rushing in a 57-13 pummeling of the winless Wawasee Warriors. The win kept the Panthers unbeaten at 5-0 (3-0 in the Northern Lakes Conference) with a three-game homestand coming up starting on September 21st. After each team turned the ball over on downs in their opponent 7 s territory on their first possession of the game, North Wood took over near midfield and quickly drove 57 yards in 7 plays to take an early 8-0 lead. The TD came on a rare pass from Nate Newcomer to Bronson Yoder, a 24-yarder, and Newcomer ran in the PAT attempt. A titanic punt by Wawasee's Brayden Johnson on the first play of the second quarter pinned the Panthers deep on their own five-yard line, but Yoder gained 11 yards on the first play and Jaden Miller then broke loose on a jet sweep up the right sideline, racing 84 yards for a touchdown. The PAT run failed but the Panthers led 14-0. Wawasee answered promptly on the kickoff when Dylan Hepler-Fink took the deep boot at his own one-yard line and bolted untouched up the middle for a state-record tying 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Johnson tacked on the PAT and the Warriors appeared to have life, trailing 14-7. The joy was shortlived, however, as after a touchback on the kickoff, North Wood victimized the hosts with another of their- patented one-play drive?,' thfS Ortb featuring an 'BO-yard run to paydirt by Yoder. The PAT run failed for the second time but the Panthers still led 20-7. Things then went further downhill for the Warriors as on the first play after the kickoff, a tipped pass ended up in the hands of Newcomer who returned it 25 yards, finally going down at the Wawasee 7-yard line. The Warrior defense stiffened, forcing a 24-yard field goal attempt by North Wood's Jerson Sanchez which split the uprights, making it 23-7

North Wood. The Warriors next drive died near midfield after a sack by Panther linebacker Veshon Malone. A bad snap on the punt forced Johnson to run and Braden Mikel knocked him out of bounds short of the first down to give the ball back to North Wood. Three plays later, the Panthers were in the end zone again on a 25-yard run by Miller and Sanchez' PAT kick made it 30-7 North Wood, a score that held up until the half. After a fine halftime show by the Warrior band, the Black Crunch defense forced a three-and-out on Wawasee's first possession of the second half. The Panthers took over at their own 41-yard line and quickly marched 59 yards in just six plays, most of it on the sturdy legs of Yoder. The touchdown came on an 8-yard run by Yoder with Wawasee unable to stop him despite having 12 men on the field, and Sanchez nailed the PAT to put North Wood up 37-7. Despite driving into North Wood territory, the Warriors eventually turned the ball over on downs on their next possession and the Panthers took advantage, grinding out a nine-play, 61-yard drive that ended with a 10-yard TD scamper by Malone. Sanchez trotted out for the PAT to widen the margin to 44-7 in favor of North Wood. Another cannon-shot punt by Johnson gave the ball back to the Panthers deep in their own territory as the fourth quarter began. With Yoder still at the controls of the offense, North Wood drove quickly for another score, with Malone toting the pigskin the final 11 yards for nis second TD of the night, making it 51-7 Panthers with ten minutes still to play. On Wawasee's next possession, Johnson capped his epic kicking night with a 70-yard punt that rolled into the end zone. Three plays later, lightning-fast North Wood sophomore Kyle Sellers bolted up the middle and outran everyone on a 68-yard TD jaunt that increased North Wood's lead to 57-7. The Warriors finally got on the board with an offensive score on their final series of the night when Steven Hauntz caught a

32-yard TD pass from Evan Eshbach, but it was far too little, too late. One week after rushing for 438 yards against Goshen, North Wood set a new season high by piling up a whopping 526 yards on the ground. Yoder led the way as usual with 177 yards and two touchdowns, while Miller added 138 yards and two scores on just five carriers. Sellers topped the century mark for the first time in his varsity career with 105 yards, and Malone added 81 yards and 2 TDs on 10 carries. Through the air, Yoder and Newcomer combined to go 6 of 11 for 96 yards and a TD. The Black Crunch defense, among the stingiest units in the state, was led by five tackles apiece from Ben Mestach and Hayden Snider. Wawasee rushed for a paltry 38 yards on 21 carries with no individual topping 20 yards for the game. Eshbach attempted 28 passes, completing 17 for 178 yards and a TD, but 120 of those yards came on just four completions. Jesse Landeros recorded nine tackles to lead the Warrior defense, while Keyan Peete chipped in with eight stops including a sack. North Wood (5-0,3-0 NLC) returns home on September 21st to begin a stretch of three straight home games, starting with Northridge (3-2, 2-1 NLC). Wawasee (0-5, 0-3 NLC) travels to the Rockpile in Plymouth to battle the Rockies in another
