Half empty or half full
There was this ad for the Peace Corp years ago that showed the picture of a partially filled glass of water, with the caption, "Is this glass half empty or half full?" Supposedly, if you were the sort of person who thought it was half full it meant you were the kind of fellow who saw potential, possibility, and opportunity (and therefore ought to volunteer for the Peace Corps) where others only saw the chance for bitterness and failure (in which case you should
stay at home). In other words, you're an optimist rather than a pessimist. In case you're wondering, optimist is supposed to be the good one,
although pessimists tend to consider themselves realists not blinded by wishful thinking, so maybe they're the good ones too. It's good to have a healthy dose of each when you're in a group so you act as a check on each other. You may remember the cartoon panel known as "The Far Side" that ran for several years before its author, Gary Larson, decided he wanted to stop while everyone was still laughing. It was a very odd cartoon which was also so close to reality that a lot of installments got clipped out of newspapers and tacked onto bulletin boards. Anyway, there was this one labelled 'The Four Types of Personalities." The single panel was divided into four parts. In the first, a sweet woman said, "The glass is half full!" In the second a grouchy man said, "The glass is half empty."ln the third box a confused fellow couldn't make up his mind. "Half fu11....N0! Wait! Half empty!...No, half...Wnat was the question?" And in the fourth box an angry fellow barked, "Hey! I ordered a cheeseburger." Okay, I lean towards optimism, but sometimes I'm the guy who ordered the cheeseburger. Actually, for me the glass is pretty full. You know, mostly things work out. We're gonna make it. I remember this motto I learned from a radio show in Los Angeles: EGBOK. That stands for "Everything's gonna be OK!" On the other hand, you never know if that glass is going to fall off the shelf and shatter. We're all going to die. This too shall pass -- and leave no trace behind. Things are often worse than you imagine. Then again, things have never been better in world history. No really. We all get to live! There are wars and rumors of wars, but fewer people are killed in wars than any other time in human history. Seriously, it's true by a huge factor. Why, the other day I was reading this article by Joshua Rothman in The New Yorker magazine. The title was "The Big Question: Is the world getting better or worse?" Guess what. It's getting better! People are much better off all around the world than they used to be. According to one expert every newspaper around the world could have run the following headline every day for the last twenty-five years because it's true: NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN EXTREME POVERTY FELL BY 137,000 SINCE YESTERDAY I'm guess what I really am is an optimistic fatalist. Or, as someone once said, decades ago, "Nothing's forever and everything's eternal." j And in case you're wondering who said that, it was me. 100 YEARS AGO SEPTEMBER 10, 1918 One of the nominations of the recent republican primary that is very pleasing to the republicans of Nappanee and vicinity is that of David F. Miller for county recorder. Mr. Miller is one of the old time members of the party who has labored for its success ever since he has lived in Nappanee. Mr. Miller has never sought a salaried office and his friends are pleased to give him their united support in recognition of the good work he has rendered for the party for many years. Mr. Miller was bom in Harrison township, this county, and has been in business in Nappanee for the past 32 years. During all this time, he has been a hard worker for the republican party and has never asked for a county office before. The Nappanee Dairy company will soon put a new policy into effect in regard to milk bottles. They will ask each customer to purchase enough bottles for their own use. These may be exchanged for milk or cash at any time. Milk will not be left when there is not an empty bottle in exchange. The mere leaving of cash or tickets will not suffice. This is the policy that is in vogue in South Bend, Elkhart, and other cities and is done to conserve the supply of bottles which are constantly increasing in price. 75 YEARS AGO SEPTEMBER 9, 1943 A decrease in the enrollment for 1943 over that of 1942 is shown by a comparison of figures from the two years. This decrease is in the senior high school and the junior high, the senior showing a loss of 25 and the junior high a loss of 12. The figures for the first day of the two years are as follows: Kindergarten, 36, 48; First Grade, 53, 52; Second Grade, 41, 57; Third Grade, 50,43; Fourth Grade, 49,48; Fifth Grade, 51, 48; and Sixth Grade, 46, 43. The total for the primary grades rose from 326 to 349. Junior High enrollment dropped from 112 to 100, and the Senior High went down from 238-td 213. A two car collision took place near the Fairy Theatre on Saturday evening. Ethel Wallace, rural route 5, Elkhart, drove her auto from the alley between the Yoder Bus Co. and the Lynn Photo Shop, and turning northward on Main Street, struck the front fender of a car driven by Dean Geyer, damaging the Geyer car to the extent of $5.00 and the Wallace car to the amount of $20.00. The accident occurred Saturday evening about 8 o'clock shortly after the down-

The perpetual problem of the gym floor at Nappanee High School is back. This year, because of the humidity over the summer, the boards have raised farther than ever. They are floating on a cork floor, and they were supposed to be the latest thing when they were installed. It now looks as if a major overhaul is going to be faced. Large dehumidifiers in the gym have been suggested as one possible solution. The cast has been chosen and rehearsals started for the Nappanee Civic Theatre production of "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying." The cast includes Jerry Stine, Bob Schmeltz, Mrs. Dick Biever, Art Gall, Abby Lee Brock, Dr. Lisle Roose, Marge Pletcher, Mike Amott, Fred Curtis, Mrs. Fred Curtis, Mrs. Eugene Slagle, Curtis Crane, D.D. Hossler, Clara Rae Walters, Wayne Hilliker, Mrs. James McQuinn, and Mrs. Maynard Shrock. The men's chorus includes Clay Moyer, Del Flesher, Dave Swartley, Ron Bower, Ray Clouse, Rev. Gene Thomas, and Ray Pippenger; the women's chorus members are Mrs. Ron Bower, Mrs. Mike Amott, Mrs. Jerry Stine, Mrs. David Stalnaker, Mrs. Vernon Cook, Carolyn Miller, Mrs. Ron Miller, and Kitty Nesuis. 25 YEARS AGO SEPTEMBER 8,1993 Nappanee EMT Gary Fuller was welcomed home this week after a seven week hospital stay, following a serious accident that left his back broken in six places. Fuller was waiting on a red light at the intersection of CR 7 and U.S. 6 when a semi-truck struck his vehicle from behind. The force of the crash pushed Fuller through the intersection and into a metal pole on an empty lot. He begins physical therapy at Elkhart General Hospital this week. In addition, he has exercises to perform at home to help strengthen his body. The North Wood High School Student Council has announced a variety of activities next week, in conjunction with "Homecoming Week." Students have been invited to participate in several types of competition, and non-com-petitive activites designed to encourage school spirit, all in preparation for the Friday night homecoming football game with Northern Lakes Conference rival, Wawasee.
