Young Panthers eager to fill big shoes
By Steve Sittler Correspondent NAPANNEE - Rebuilding is not a word that is familiar to fans of the North Wood Panthers, who enter every season with high expectations for the football program, regardless of the personnel on hand. The shoes to be filled in 2018 are large; however, as the Panthers lost 88% of their rushing yards, 99% of passing yards, and 95% of receiving yards from 2017 to graduation. Nevertheless, North Wood boasts one particularly outstanding returnee in senior and four-year varsity player Bronson Yoder, who will anchor both the offense and defense, as well as handle the punting, and a host of young, eager players ready to make their mark in this, the 50th season of North Wood High School football. Entering his fifth season in charge of the Black Crunch program, head coach Nate Andrews acknowledged his team faces big challenges with four of the first five games on the road, a tough Northern Lakes Conference (NLC) schedule, and a sectional group that seems to get better every year. "We've got a handful of experienced guys, but there are many young players that are going to have to step up for us early", said Andrews at a scorching-hot Family Night gathering following completion of the opening week of practice. Yoder, who will start the season at quarterback, is without question the star of the Panthers, leading the returnees in rushing, passing, receiving, punt and kick returns, and punting yardage. The powerful Yoder,

a weapon in all phases of the game, particularly given room to operate in the open field, will be backed up by sophomore Nate Newcomer, who saw some game action on the varsity as a freshman on both sides of the ball. Expected to lead the running game are juniors Veshon Malone and Ben Mestach, 2017 JV standouts who showed flashes of potential in mop-up action on the varsity last season. Junior Jaden Miller and Jason Bontrager figure to be primary targets at wide-out. Anchoring the offensive line will be senior and returning starter Braden Mikel, who will move from center to guard. Taking over the center spot will be junior Garrett Anglemyer, also a starter in 2017, while part-time starter Josh Miller will also man a starting spot. Braden Marshall and Thames Brubaker are also in the mix for a starting position on the offensive line, according to Andrews. "We are going to be a power running team in 2018, much like we were at the end of last year", stated Andrews. "We want to play hard-nosed football, control the line of scrimmage, and occasionally pop a big play now and then". On defense, the senior Yoder is the leading returning tackier from his safety position. Fierce senior linebacker Nic Bontrager, along with juniors Jake Lone and Jaden Miller all recorded more than 20 tackles last year, and the rangy Borkholder, taller, stronger, and heavier as a junior, will move from comerback to defensive end. Anchoring the middle of the defensive line will be senior Noah Alexander, while Andrews identified sophomores Kyle Sellers and Tanner

Feenstra as youngsters being counted on to provide help and mature quickly in the secondary. Yoder will handle the punting duties as he has for the past three seasons, while newcomer Jerson Sanchez will be the kicker. Spots in the return game, a strong point for the Panthers in 2017, are up for grabs among a number of players as Andrews looks for that elusive norm-south guy who can shift field position and make big plays. The NLC will be tough as usual, although defending champion Northridge lost most of their key players and will field a young squad like the Panthers. Perennial power Concord will also be in the mix, and new head coach Bart Curtis, a Nappanee native and experienced winning football coach, will bring his wishbone offense to Warsaw. Meanwhile, the sectional field remains formidable, including NLC foes Plymouth, Northridge, and Wawasee, along defending champion Angola and Culver Academies, who returns most of a team that lost by a single-point in overtime in the sectional find a year ago.

Unfortunately for a young and inexperienced team, the 2018 schedule does the Panthers no favors, with four of the first five on the road, including the annual opener against arch-rival Jimtown, with the lone home game against the evil Cortcord Minutemen. A 3-2 start would put the Panthers in great shape to defend their house, with three straight home games at venerable Andrews Field before the regu-lar-season finale at the Rockpile in Plymouth.
