Comhusking comp coming to Bremen
By Mackenzie DeGroot Staff Writer BREMEN Comhusking - it's a competition and just off U.S. 31 in the little town Bremen, an annual contest celebrating Indiana's rich farming history and traditions will take place Oct. 6. The contest the Indiana Comhusking Contest has been held annually since 1926. At the competition, a husker will compete to pull the husks off of ears of com by hand within a certain time limit. The time limit changes depending on which class the person registers to. Once time is up, the amount of com successfully husked is weighed. Deductions can be made by a field judge who will make sure that all rules are followed in the competition. A gleaner will follow the competitor to pick up any missed ears of com or com that is not picked up by the contestant. According to the Indiana Comhusking Association,

in the early 20th Century, a farmer could hand pick approximately 100 bushels of com in a nine hour day. Today a combine can do this in five minutes. Winners of the competition could receive cash prizes and items donated by local businesses. The top three Indiana residents to place can proceed to the national com husking competition. There are individual and team competitions, and anyone can compete. Anyone can compete, and last year, Indiana Com Husking Association president Clay Geyer said, there were at least 50 competitors ranging in age from 11-87. "We believe it's important for everyone to understand where their food comes from and to gain a better understanding of how farm products are produced," Geyer said. The Indiana Com Husking Association is a nonprofit organization that speaks and provides educational displays at fairs, schools,

festivals and community events throughout the state in order to keep the lspirit of farming alive. Geyer said the competition was created to preserve the past, when families lived on farmp and worked hard together. "The contest is wholesome, family fun," Geyer said. "Families can even compete together in the team competition." Registration will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 6, and the contest will begin "as soon as the teams of horses are on site and harnessed to go." Fees to compete range from $5-S2O depending on the class, but parking and admission is free. The Pine Creek Church of the Brethren will offer food, and Clay Geyer hopes that if the weather permits there will be tents with activities for children at this year's contest.
